BREENFORCING BREAST non. GARDEN IMPLEM NTSQ Original application fi led April 28,1921, seriaiino. 465,273. Divided and this application filed May 115,
, 1923. Serial 1V0. 639,122.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, PASQUALE DELnA MONICA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrison, in the county of. West chester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reenforcing Breasts for Garden Implements, of which the following is a specification.
of the spade or shovel type and more specifically to the provision of areenforcing breast and an inclined foot receiving face, especially well adapted for use in connection with garden implements such as are described and claimed in my prior PatentNo. 1,458,987 issued June 19, 1923, of which the present application is a division.
The primary object of the invention is the a provision of a: novel means for facilitating the insertion of the blade or fork of the implement into the soil or other material which it is desired tohandle.
Another object of the invention is to'pros vide a novel reenforcing construction which will add strength and rigidity to the blade,
permitting the implement to be used for heavy Work without the or breaking the blade.
A further object is to liability of bending provide a novel. re
enforcing construction for carrying the blade of a spade or shovel, and which will permit the removal of the blade when the same becomes worn or unfit for use.
A still further object is to provide the upper edge of the blade of the implement with a relatively broad inclined foot receiving face, whereby the blade can be readily and easily inserted into the soil or other material being handled, and one which will prevent the shoes of the user from becoming worn or cut as is customary with the use of the spades or shovels now in common use.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a hand implement 0f the above character, which will be durable and cilicient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture, and "one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompany- 'This invention relates to hand implements In the ing drawing, forming a pantof this speci fication, in which draw1ng Figure 1 is a perspective viewof a shove constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the reenforcing breast attached to a curved or offset handle.- p I Figure 2 is a perspective view of a spade of. the straight handletype constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a spade fork construction in accordancew th my 1n vention, showing the relatively broad inclined foot receivingface formed integral with the prongs of the fork, and
' Figure 4: is a longitudinal side view of'the curved or offset type, showing a portion of the blade and reenforcing breast in section, illustrating the to the breast.
drawing, where similar characters corresponding parts throughout designate means for securing theblade the several views, the letter A designates the 4 soil working or material handling portion of the tool; B the handle therefor andYC the reenforcing breast. p ,7
The handles for these 'implementsare generally designated by the letter B, which may a be of the ordinary wooden construction, or
constructed as disclosed in my co-pending application. The handle B may be of the straight'type as shown in Fig. 2, or may have acurved 'or offset portion 7 near'its lower end as is clearly shown in Figures 1 and S-of the drawing, at its upper end with any hand gripv 8.
The soil working portion for these implements is designated generally by the letter A, and may be made in any desirable shape or size, to be used in connection with the reenforcing breast C which willbe hereinafter more specifically described.
Referrin now to thereenforcing breast C, it preferably comprises an elongated main body portion 10, having a handle re ceiving extension 11 formed on its outer face 12 intermediate its ends, and adapted to be cBarried by the lower portion 9 of the handle main body portion 10 has flanges 14 and 15 extending therefrom, longitudinal with the main body portion, and forming a transversely extending slot or groove 16 for the suitable type of and may be provided The opposite or inner face 13 of the L the blade into the ground.
of this face 12'is'one of the novel features This blade A may be detachably secured in the slot 16 by means of a suitable fastening element, such as a rivet 17. Thus when the blade becomes Worn, or unfit for use it may be removed and replaced by a new one.
'so desired, the central portion of the flanges lt and 15 may be provided with the down wardly, extending portion 18 in order to further reinforce the central portion blade. The main body portion 10 preferably extends the fulliwidth of the blade A, and its upper or outer face 12 is formed relatively broad, defining a rearwardly in clined face, and being in a plane diagonally crosswise of the axis of the handle receiving extension 11; This relatively broad 'rearwardly inclined face forms a foot rest or step, in order to facilitate theinsertion of The inclination of. the invention, as it has been found in actual practice the inclination of the face permits a direct thrust of the foot in order to insert the blade into the soil or other ma- 5 terial, being handled.
The-blade. A of the spade fork as shown in Figure 3 is constructed of a plurality of prongs 19 formed on the transversely ex tending main body portion 20 atits inner face 21. Theupper or outer face 22 is also of relative broad formation and .rearwardly inclined so asto' form a broad foot rest or step, which is the same as or similar to the inclined foot rest 12 shown inFigures 1 and 2. The body portion 20 also is provided with ahandle receiving extension 23 formed of the thereof and having its upper on its outer face 22 intermediate its ends and adapted to be carried -by the lower portion 9 of the handle 13.
From the foregoing description it can be seen that an improved reinforcement breast for garden implements has been provided,
rearwardly and downwardly, a handle en gag ng element extending from the upper face of the head portion, and a handle con nected with the handle engaging element.
2. As an article of manufacture, a reenforcing breast for garden implement blades comprising an elongated main-body portion of a length substantially the width of the face inclined blade a handle receiving portion extending v i from the upper face of the-body intermediate its ends and integral therewith and spaced flanges extending from the under face face-of the body longitudinally thereof and providing a slot for receiving the upper end portion of the implement.
