To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, IVI'LLTAM D. Gin-TY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Batesville, in the county of Independence and State of Arkansas, and CHARLES B KENT, late of Oil Trough, county of Independence, andv State of Arkansas, deceased, did invent a new and useful Land Roller; and be it known that I, MYRA KENT, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Oil Trough, in the county of Independence and State of Arkansas, have duly qualiied as administratrix of the estate of the said CHARLES B. KENT, deceased.

The specification of the aforesaid land roller is as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein a preferred but not mandatory embodiment of the invention is shown.

The device forming the subject mattei' of this application is adapted to be used, primarily, to roll crops, as distinguished from an implement used to prepare the soil for planting. The invention aims to provide a roller which will break up clods and produce a mulch.

It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that sort to which the invention appertains.

We do not bind ourselves to the specific details of construction hereinafter set forth, and depicted in the drawings, since, within the scope of what is claimed, a mechanic make changes in the precise embodiment of the invention selected for illustration, without avoiding the charge of infringement, or departing from the spirit of the invention.

It is within the scope of the invention that a telescoping or longitudinally extensible roller be provided. Such a roller, denoted by the numeral is shown in Figure l of the drawings. The part 54 is a brace,

the element 53 being an axle. The roller includes a convexed central or intermediate portion 56 and frusto-conical ends 57.

The roller 58 embodies sections 58 and 59, the section 59 being provided with an annular; flange 60 received slidably within the section 58, the construction being such that the roller 55 may be elongated or shortened. The section 59 of the roller 55 includes an end wall 6l carrying an inwardly projecting tubular bearing 62 receiving the axle 53. The axle 53 is provided with a collar 63 located externally of the end wall 61 of the section 59 of the roller, the collar 63 being journaled within a separable retainer 64 held by securing elements 65 upon the end wall 61.

The section 58 of the roller 55 includes an end wall 6 through which an auxiliary axle 67 passes, the axle 67 being mounted in the brace 54 and being held against inward movement by a Cotter pin 68. A washer 69 may be interposed between the frame. brace 54 and the end wall 66. A washer or abutment v70 surrounds the auxiliary axle 67 and cooperates with the inner surface of the end wall 66 of the section 58. The washer 70 is retained by a cotter pin 7l, mounted in the auxiliary axlel 67.

It is obvious that the length of the roller 55 may be varied by moving the sections 58 and 59 inwardly or outwardly with respect to each other, the frame brace 54 being adjusted accordingly. Owing to the presence of the collar 63 and the retainer 64, and in view of the provision of the washer 70 and its retaining element 71, the sections 58 and 59 of the roller 55 cannot slide inwardly, toward each other, after the roller has been adjusted by increasing its length.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

In a device of the class described, a roller comprising hollow sections telescoped for longitudinal adjustment, one section being provided upon one end with a tubular bearing; a main axle received in the tubular bearing. an auxiliary axle carrying the other section and received in the tubular bearing; means for mounting the axles for longitudinal adjustment with respect to each other; WILLIAM D.
