CALCULATING ATTACHMENT FOR TYPEWRITERS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FERDINAND J TILL- MAN and ALFRED C. TILDMAN, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of the city of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Calculating Attachment for Typewriters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the mechanisms of calculating attachments for typewriters, one of the objects being to provide an improved way of selectthe accumulator or accumulators to be calculated on by arranging means adjacent the rear of the typewriter carriage, and also a reverse order of means under the control of the operator adjacent the front of the typewriter to change the selection of the 20 accumulator or accumulators regardless of the arrangement of the means adjacent the rear of the typewriter carriage.
Another object of this invention is in pro- 1 viding means for operating the calculating mechanisms upon the downward stroke of a numeral key of the calculating device, thereby allowing another numeral key to be operated before the first operated key has returned to its normal position.
A further object is in providing improved locking and unlocking means which are operated on the downward stroke of a numeral key so as to prevent a second or more keys being operated while the operated key is on its downward stroke, and incidentally during the operation of calculating, said means also providing for releasing the locked position of the other keys just before the operating key has reached the limit of its downward stroke, thereby allowing another-key to be operated before the first operated key returns to its normal position.

Referring to the drawings, a rectangular supporting frame 1 is provided for enclosing the greater portion of thisimproved calculating atta'chment,the typewriter 2 to which the calculating attachment is adapted to be co-operable being mounted on said frame 1.
Removably secured to each of the numeral keys 3 of the typewriter is a link each of said links at their lower ends being pivotally connected to a respective calculating key 5. said keys 5 being reciprocally mounted in a pair of horizontal supports 6 and 7 which are secured to the side walls 8 and 9 of the frame 1, and carried by each of said keys 5 are a pair of spaced apart pins 10 and 11. Arranged between each of said pins of each key is one end of a segmental lever 12, each of said levers being respectively pivotloo ed at 13 to a respective supporting bracket 1 14, all of said brackets 14 being turnably I, slidably mounted on the master wheel shaft mounted as designated at 16 to a cross bar 17, the pivots 13 of said brackets being out of alinement with one another so that the circumferential travel of the teeth bearing ends 18 of said segmental levers 12 will be of different lengths.
Formed on the master wheel shaft 23 is a longitudinal key-way 24 which provides for slidingly keying the gear 22 thereto. Rigidly secured to the shaft 20 is a gear 25,
said gear being of the same diameter as the gears 21 and 22, and meshing with said gear is a reversing pinion 26 which is mounted on a stubshaft 27, said stub shaft being supported from the wall 8, said pinion 26 being in sliding alinement with the gear 22 of the master shaft, and is adapted to co-operate with said gear 22 when said gear is placed in mesh therewith by the shifting lever 28.
Slidably mounted on the master wheel shaft 23 is a master wheel 29 which is adapted' to co-operate with the mechanisms of the grand total'izer accumulator 30, said wheel 29 having the annular groove 31 of its hub in engagement with a depending support32.
Oppositely disposed from said support 32 is a support 33 having. its uppeaend in sliding engagement with the mas r shaft 23, and'swingingly mounted between said sup ports 32 and 33 is a rack 34 having a pair of forwardly extending ears 35, and mount ed between said ears isa tilting bar 36 which parallels the rack 34. Engaging said tilting bar 36is the bifurcated end. 37 of a shifting lever 38, said lever being pivoted at 39 to a bracket 40 which is supported by the frontplate 41 of the frame 1.
a The supports 32 and 33 are slidingly mounted on a horizontally arranged guiding member 42, said guiding member'being supported at its ends in'the walls 8 and 9 of the frame 1. Slidably mounted on the master wheel shaft 23 is another master wheel 43 which is adapted to co-operate with the mechanisms of the cross figure ac.- cumulator.44, and in engagementwith each annular groove 45, a pair of which are formed on the hub of the master wheel 43, are the bifurcated ends 46 of a rack support 47, and swingingly secured at 48 to the rack 48.
In engagement "with said tilting bar 50 is the bifurcated end 51 of a shifting lever 52, said lever being pivoted at 53 to the bracket 40, and embracing said lever 52 and the lever 38 is a quadrant 54 containing locking notches 55 and 56; the lever 52 being co-operable with the notches 56, whereas the lever 38 is co-operable with the notches 55.
Meshing with the rack 48 are teeth 57 of a segmental gear 58, and arranged opposite from said teeth 57 on said gear are teeth 59, said gear 58 being turnably mounted on the bolt 60 which is carried by a cross member 61, which is-arranged between the side walls 8 and 9 of the frame 1.
Turnably mounted on' said bolt 60 beneath the-segmental gear 58 is another segmental gear 62, the teeth 63 of which are adapted to mesh with the teeth of the rack 34.

-Secured to the upper endof the shaft 66 is a crank 70 carrying a spring held dog 71, said dog being pivoted to said crank 70 and arranged in the path of travel of the tabulating stops 72 that are removably mounted on the tabulator rack 73, the spring of said dog being secured thereto and to said crank, and carried by. said crank is a limiting pin so'that' the spring of said dog will normally hold it against said pin. Secured to the upper end of the tubular shaft 67 is a crank 74 carrying a swingingly mounted spring actuated dog-75, said dog '75 and its actuating spring being secured to the crank 74 in a like manner as is the dog 71 and its respective spring to the crank 70, said dog also being in the path of travel of the tabu'lating stops 72.

In carrying out the operation of this im proved calculating attachment, when a typewriter has been mounted on the frame 1 of the calculating attachment, and the links at connected to the numeral keys?) of the typewriter, as described, when .a numeral key 3 of a typewriter isoperated, a respective calculator key 5 coupled therewith will be depressed, thereby carrying down the cam 111, one of which is carried by each calculating key, and the bevelled face of which is formed on a plane lower than the pin 10 of each key, said cam engaging the rear end of a respective lever 12, thereby forcing the rear end of said lever over to one side. and causing the bracket 14, to which said lever is pivotally secured, to swing on its pivot 16 to a position of engagement against a respective stop 112, and in which moved positionthe teeth bearing end of said lever 12 will be placed in an alining position relative to engaging the teeth of a respective gear 19 1 of the accounting transmission shaft 20.
Upon moving the rear end of the segmenposition as just described relative to the actuation of the cam 111 there against, it is to be noted that the rear end of said lever was moved-to a vertically alined position relative to the cam surface portion 113 of a respective cam 100, and to the opposite side of the respective guiding plate 114, and in this position. inasmuch as the cam 111 of the operated calculator key 5 has been disengaged from engagement with the segmental lever 12, the pin 10 carried by said key 5 will engage said lever, and force it downward, the extreme rear end of said lever bearing against the cam surface. 113, thereby, forcing the rear end 115 of said cam 100 in between a respective pair of drowding members 108, thereby providing a two-key lock action that will be hereinafter described. Incidental with the downward travel of the rear end of the elected segmental lever 12 just men tioned, the teeth of the teeth bearing end thereof were elevated, thereby engaging and meshing with the teeth of the respective gear 19 to which said lever, 12 is related, and imparting motion to the transmission shaft 20 on which said gear is mounted, which mulators as 114, and pull the teeth bearing en motion will be transferred from said-shaft through the gears 21 and 22 to the master wheel shaft 28,- thereby imparting the proper amount of motion to said shaft relative to the action of the number of teeth called for on the operated segmental lever 12, and in which either one or both of the master wheels 29 and 43 will be actuatedrelative to actuating either one or both of the accumulators 30 and 44, as called for by the operator.
After the afore mentioned segmental lever 12 has reached the end of its downward travel, and the motion of the teeth bearing end 18 of said lever has been transferred to the master wheel shaft and accu- 'ust described, the coil spring 116, one of which is related to each supporting bracket of each segmental lever Wlll become active on account of the rear end of said lever in its downward position being beneath the lower end, of the guiding plate (1 18 of said operated lever out of mesh from 1ts respective gear 19 which has ust been operated, said pulling out movement simultaneously returning the rear end of said lever to the inactive side of the guiding plate 114, and inasmuch as the operators finger has been released. from the typewr1ter key, the return spring 117 of said lever will return the rear end of the lever; to 1ts upwardly normal. position, and lncidentally the teeth bearing end ofsaid lever will be lowered.
If during the upward travel of the rear end of the segmental lever 12 the operator through carelessness or otherwise agaln operated the numeral key of the typewriter in which the calculating key 5 would tend to be forced downward, the extreme rear end of said lever on its downward movement would engage one of the teeth 118 of the swinging locking member 104 as said locking member is resiliently held in the path of travel of the rear end of said lever.
The pins 11, one of which is carried by each calculating key 5 is provided for the purpose of preventing the keys from being returned before completion of their stroke or operation.
Referring now to the two-key locking means which became activeas the swinging cam 100 was moved rearwardly by the descending segmental lever 12, the. rear end 115 of said cam 100 upon being forced further in to its respective V-shaped recess 109, forced the co-relating pair of crowding members 108 apart, thereby crowding the rest of said members 108 together, thereby presenting a solid body through the entirety of the remaining members 108, in which no other swingingly mounted cam 100 would be allowed to be moved rearwardly in the event of the operator attempting to operate a sec- 0nd key before the first key operated had completed its downward travel.
Immediately on completion of the downward stroke of the operated key and before said lever is moved to the opposite side of the guiding plate 114, the rear end of said lever became released from engagement with its respective swinging cam 100, thereby allowing the return spring 106, which is related to said cam'to swing said cam forwardly, thereby withdrawing the rear end 115 of said cam from engagement between is therefore to be noted that with such a.
construction a rapidly operating machine is provided, as it is not necessaryito wait for the complete return of a previously operated key before operating a second key. Co-incident with the rearward movement of any cam 100 relativeto a respective lever 12 operated, three other locking actions are brought into effect which are the adding and subtracting shifting lever lock, transmission shaft. lock, and platen carriage lock, said locking actions being carried on as follows: When any one of the plurality of the actuation of a typewriter key and its. related calculating key, the bar 98 arranged rearwardly of said cams 100 will cause the lower end of the lever 95 to move forward- .swinging cams 100 is moved rearwardly by ly,thereby forwardly moving the shifting rod 82, and inasmuch as the ratchet pawl 84 is pivotally connected to said shifting rod, said pawl will be disengaged from the locking ratchet wheel 86 which is carried by the transmission shaft 20, thereby unlocking and allowing said shaft to be moved in a calculating direction from actuation of the key being operated.
During the forward movement of the shiftingrod 82, the locking projection 90, which is carried by said rod adjacent the forward extending end 87 thereof will engage the abutting portion 91 of the shifting plate 91 and gear shifting member 92, which is co -operable with the shifting lever 28 -of the gear 22, thereby preventing the gear 22 from being shifted from out of mesh with the gear 21 of the transmission shaft 20.
The meshing position of the gears 21 and 22 as shown in Fig. 2 denotes that the master wheel shaft 23 is travelling in an adding direction relative to the accumulators, whereing gear 26, said gear 26 being constantly in mesh with the gear which is carried by the transmission shaft 20. In this shifted position of the plate 91, the abutting portion 91" is carried to a position across the forward end 87 of the shifting rod 82, in which position the shifting plate will be held against return movement by the. projection 90 of said shifting rod 82 being in the path of the portion 91 when said shifting rod is moved forward as just related relative to releasing the ratchet pawl 84.
In addition to theaforesaid moving forward of the shifting-rod 82, since the rear end is secured to the'lever 81. of the shaft 78, which is supported from the end wall 76 of the frame 1. the locking member 7 9 carried by said shaft 78 which is normally held in a rearward moved position is moved forward, thereby engaging the teeth 59 and 64 of the segmental gears 58 and 62, thereby locking the master wheels 29 and43 of the master wheel shaft 23 and the typewriter carriage A against horizontal movement.
From the aforesaid description relative to the three locking features just described,
it is quite obvious that when any calculating key is operated downwardly, the shifting rod 82 actuated therewith will incidentally release the transmission shaft 20 so that it ,can be moved in the calculating direction,
and at the same time prevent theshifting gear 22 from being moved out of either an adding or subtracting position during the downward stroke of the key operation. and in addition lock the platen carriage A and master wheels 29 and 43 against horizontal movement so thatthe said master wheels cannot be moved out of their selected accounting columns of their respective accumulators.
I pon completion of the downward stroke of a calculating key and just before the returning of the actuated calculating key has commenced as afore relatedythe swinging cam 100, which is moved rearward by the downward "key operation immediately swings forward, thereby allowing the cross bar 98 to move forward, which will cause the shifting rod 82 to move rearward, thereby affecting the lock on the transmission shaft 20 and releasing the adding and subtracting I3which is carried by the shifting mechanism. and also releasing the lock pertaining to the carriage and master wheels so that they can be shifted to any desired column, which will be vpredetermined by the operator.
- In describing the operation of the master 3 wheel shifting mechanism which is com- 6O prised of the segmental gears 58 and 62, racks 34 and 48 at one end, and the gear segments and 68, the operator having previously mounted a tabulating stop 72 in the desired position on the tabulator rack platen carriage A,
then the tabulating key 118, upon being operated will cause the member 119 to release the carriage A and allow it to travel to a position until stopped by the engagement of stop 72 with one of the stop dogs 120 which has been moved into stopping position by the tabulator key 118..
As the rack 73 and tabulator stop 72 carried thereby travelled, the projection 121 of said stop 72 engaged against the dog of the crank 7 4, thereby moving said crank and tubular shaft 67 on which said crank is mounted, and causing the gear segment 68 to impart motion to the segmental gear 58, and inasmuch asthe teeth 57 of said gear '58 are in mesh with the rack 48, which is carried by thesupport 47 of the master wheel 43, said master wheel will be shifted to a corresponding position relative to the position of stopping of the tabulator stop 72 which will provide the desired denomination required in the accumulator 44 to which the master wheel 43 pertains.
In operating the master wheel shifting mechanism pertaining to the accumulator 30, a tabulator stop such as 122, having an over hanging depending portion 123 see Fig. 8, is mounted in the desired osition on the rack 73, said depending portion 123 during the travel of the stop 122 engaging and moving the dog 71 which is carried by the crank 70, said crank being secured to the upper end of the shaft 66,and at its lower end to the gear segment 65, and since said segment 65 is in mesh with the segmental gear 62, the rack 34 will be moved, thereby moving the supporting member 32 and shifting the master wheel 29 to a position corresponding with the position of the tabulator stop 122 so that said master wheel will be in position to transfer calculating movement to its accumulator 3O dependent on the calculator key operated. v
If it is desired to move both of the master wheels 29 and 43 at one time into like-post tions relative to their respective accumulators to which they are adapted to co-operate, a tabulating stopsuch as 124, having the vertical extending portion 125, is predeterminably mounted on the rack 73, then when the carriage is released by actuation of the tabulating key 118, the vertical portion 125 of said stop 124 will engage and move both of the dogs 75 and 71, thereby transmitting motion to both of the segmental gears 58 and 62, and to both of the racks 34 and 48, and their respective master wheels. I
Inasmuch as both of the dogs 71 and 75 are spring actuated, when the carriage'A is returned, it will pass by the tabulating stops carried by the carriage and will pass said dogs without becoming active on the master wheel shifting mechanism, .as the master wheels 29 and 43 and their shifting mechanisms pertaining thereto are returned iii) to their neutral positions by the springs 126 and 127, which are operable with respective rack supports of the master wheels 29 and 43. If however, any one of the tabulator stops have been set in a predetermined position on the rack 73, and it is desired by the operator to change the order of working of a certain specific stop, for instance if the stop 72 has been set, and it is desired to make said stop do the work of t-abulator stop 122, said sto 72 being primarily intended to actuate t 1e segmental gear 58 and master wheel 43, the operator on moving the lever 52 forward will swing the rack 48 upwardl out of meshing relation with segmenta gear 58. The lever 38 is then pulled rearwardly, thereby swinging lower rack 34 upwardly and in mesh with the teeth 57 of the gear 58, in which position the tabulator.
stop 72 when moved by the carriage A will shift the master whel 29.
'On the other hand if it is desired to make the tabulator stop 122 do the work that is primarily intended for the stop 72, the lower rack 34 is thrown out of mesh from the segmental gear 62 by actuation of the shifting lever 38, then the upper rack 48 is shifted by its lever 52 into mesh with the teeth 63 of the gear 62, thereby making themaster wheel 43 co-operable with the movement of the segmental gear 62. It is to be noted that the teeth of the racks 34 and 48 are wider 'than their co-operating'segmental teeth of the'segmental gears58 and 62. This is for the purpose of adapting either one of the racks to a double engagement with both of the sets of teeth of said segmental gears 58 and 62,- as it is sometimes desired to shift both of the master wheels 29 and 43 to the same. denominating position to their respective accumulators, without the aid of the tabulator stop 124. In this connection, on account of the levers 38 and 52 being located at the front of the machine, the operator can readily shift either of said levers, thereby disregarding the previously set position of either of the tabulator stops 72 or 122.
Each of the segmental gears is provided with a special tooth 128, each tooth being adapted to mesh with a special recess of each rack 34 and 48, each of said racks being further .provided with a special tooth 129,
said teeth 129 being co-operable with a re-v spective segmental gear 58 and 62, said special teeth 128 and 129 providing a lock, so that said racks can not engage the teeth of the segmental gears in improper posi- -tions, when being swung into engagement with either of said segmental gears.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the segmental levers 12 which have their pivots 13 to the right of the cross bar 17 are each guided in their vertical swinging movement between vertical pairs of upwardly extending members 129, each pair of members 129 forming part of each respective bracket 14. These pairs of members 129 relieve the horizontal swinging strain of the levers 12 from their respective pivots 13 when said levers are shifted in and out of mesh from their respective gears 19 relative to. said levers swinging on their pivots 16, and to throw the swinging strainof said levers on said pivots 16.
What we claim is:
1. In a calculating machine, a calculating mechanism, a plurality of calculating keys, each adapted to the same distance of travel, and a transmission mechanism comprised of a plurality of intermediately pivoted, horizontally and vertically swingable members which are continually in mesh with the gearing of saidcalculating mechanism during the downward stroke of said keys. i
2. In a calculating machine, a plurality of calculating keys, a pivoted lever for each of said keys, each bearing a sector, a swivel support for each of the pivots of said levers,
and a transmission shaft bearing gearing,
1 said sectors of said levers being continually calculating keys, a calculating mechanism,
and. a transmission mechanism,comprised of a plurality of levers eachbeing difl'erently fulcrumed and adapted to both vertical and horizontal swinging movement, co-operable with said keysand said calculating mechanism for providing a continual transmitting movement to said calculating mechanism during the complete downward travel of any one of said keys.
4. In a calculating machine, the combination of a plurality of calculating keys, a plurality of swinging levers each having their respective pivots differently positioned. swivel supporting means for said pivot of said levers, and a transmission mechanism, said keys and said mechanism being directly co-operable with each other.by said levers 0 that said transmission mechanism will be continually operated during the downward movement of any one of said keys.
The combination of a calculating mechanism and a typewriter co-operable therewith,,said mechanism having a plurality of calculating keys which are coupled with the numeral keys of the typewriter, a lever related to each of said keys, each having its pivot differently located. a swivel support for each of the pivots of said levers. and a transmission mechanism forming part of the calculating mechanism coupled with each of said calculating keys by said levers adapted to continual operation during the complete downward travel of any one of said calculating keys. a 6. In calculating machine, a calculating lot key, a transmission gear, and a pivoted segmental gear having one end operably related with said key, and its'opposite end co-operable with said gear and there being a swivel support for the pivot of said lever.
7. I11 a calculating machine, a calculating key, a transmission gear, and a pivoted seg mental gear having one end operably related with said key, and its opposite, end co-operable with said gear, and means provided for withdrawing said lever from meshing with said gear.
8. In a calculating machine, a segmental gear having a lever and adapted to a vertical and a horizontal swinging movement, a calculating key operable with said lever, a gear adapted to be actuated by said segmental gear. and means provided for withdrawing said segmental gear from engagement with said other gear.
9. In a writing machine, the combination of a platen carriage bearing a rack bar, a master wheel, a removable tabluator stop carried by said rack bar, a shifting mechanism for said master wheel comprised of geared means which are operable by said stop and a shiftable rack movable with said master wheel adapted to be placed in or out of mesh with said geared means.
10. In a writing machine, the combination of a platen cariage bearing a rack bar, a master wheel. a removable tabulator stop carried by said rack bar, a shifting mechanism for said master wheel comprised of apair of independently movable geared means either of which are adapted to be actuated by said "stop, and a shiftable rack movable with said master wheel adapted to be placed in mesh with either of said geared means.
11. In a writing m'achine,- the combination of a plate-n carriage bearing a rack bar, a master wheel, a removable tabulator stop carried by said rack bar, a shifting mechanism for said master wheel comprised of a pair of independently movable geared means either of which are adapted to be actuated by said stop, and a shiftable rack movable with said master wheel adapted to mesh simultaneously with both of said geared means.
12. In a calculating attachment for a typewriter,\a master wheel shiftably relative to the shaft on which it is "mounted, arockable rack member movable with said wheel, a platen carriage forming part of the type writer to which the calculating mechanism is related, geared means co-operable. with said rack member and said carriage for shifting said wheel when the carriage is moved, and other means for disengaging said rack member from engagement with said geared means.
13. In a calculating machine, a pair of nrsster wheels, a pair of movablemembers each adapted to shift said wheels independently of one another, and there being means provided for allowing said members to be operated in unison 'so as to become active towards shifting both of said wheels together.
14.. The combination of a typewriter and a calculating machine, a master wheel shifting mechanism comprising a pair of swinging members forming part of said calculating machine operable with the carriage of the typewriter, a pair of master wheels adapted to be actuated by said members, and means provided whereby either one of said master wheels can be actuated by either one of said members. I
15. In a calculating machine, the combination of a pair of calculating keys, a singlekey mechanism adapted to be actuated upon the operating travel ofeither of said keys, means for automatically releasing said mechanism when one of said keys has been operated downwardly so that said other key can be operatedduring the return travel of said first operated key, and means for preventing a succeeding operation on either of said keys during their return trav'el. r

25. In a calculating machine, the combination of a pair of calculating keys, transmitting means co-operable with each key,
' crowding members, a respective movable member for. each key adapted to be moved into said crowding members when each key is separately operated, said crowding members and each respective movable member providing means for preventing actuation of one of said keys while said other key is:
being operated in one direction, and means provided whereby when one of said keys has been operated in one direction the respective movable memberactuated thereby into said crowding members will be released from said crowding members immediately after the operated key vhas been actuated and he;

Ina calculating machine, the combination of a pair of calculating keys, transmitting means co-operable with each key, crowding members, a respective movable member for each key adapted tobe movedv into said crowding members when each key' is separately operated, said crowding members and each res ective movable member providing means or preventing actuation of one of said keys while said other key is being operated in one direction, and means provided whereby when one of said keys has been operated in one direction the respective movable mem'ber actuated thereby into said crowding members will be released from said crowding members immediately after the operated key has been actuated so that the other key can be operated before the first operatedrkey has been returned to its netural position.

A calculating machine having an accumulator, numeral keys, means for transmitting motion from said numeral keys to said accumulator, and a single key mechanism for preventing two or more keys from actuating the accumulator at the same time, said mechanism adapted to be released automaticall upon the completion of the operake of a key so as to permita second key to be actuated during the inoperative stroke of a key, and means for preventing a second operation on the operating key bereturned to its neutral position.

A calculating machine having an accumulator, numeral keys, means for transmitting movement from said numeral keys to said accumulator, each key being adapted to be depressed from its normal condition to actuate the accumulator and adapted to return without actuating the accumulator during the return stroke, and a single key mechanism for the keys from being depressed at the same time, said mechanism adapted to be released automatically after a key has completed its operative stroke so as to permit a second key to be operated during the return stroke of a key, and means for preventing a depressing operation of a key during. its re turn stroke.
