In order to adapt the device to roads of different widths, the prop or brace has sections telescopically arranged with relation to one another, and. in order tov produce a prop orbrace of suflicient strength to withstand the strain incident to its use the said brace, in the present embodiment of the 1nvention, comprises two sidemembers 22 and 23 which are held in spaced relation to each other by plates 24:, which plates may be lo cated above and below the members 22 and 23, and twoof the plates which "aline, one each 'atithe top and bottom of the saidmembers, have apertures 25 to receive a pin. 26 by which the telescopic member 27 of thebrace or prop is-held. at different positions of adjustment. The platesacting in conjunctionwith the side members 22 and 23 constitute guides for the telescopic member the prop v member, and the said plates extend beyond the end of the telescopic member. 'Apertures such as 31 are formed atthe ends of the plates to receive a pintle 32 on which the runner or shoe is oscillatably mounted, as will presently appear.
A plate 33 has an apertured boss or lug 34 which fits between the ends of the plates 29 and 30, and the pivot pin 32 extends through the aperture of the said boss or lug so that the plate may oscillate. A runner or shoe 35 is secured tothe plate 33 by fastenings such as rivets or the like, and the said runner'has an outwardly curved lower edge. An apertured quadrant 36 is secured to the runner or plate on. which the runner is mounted, and the said quadrant is connected to a stationary part of j the road grading machine, as, for instance, the scraper. thereof, by a cable or link 37 and this serves to hold the runner at different positions of adjustment in order that its resistancemay be increased or diminished, according to the requirements in practice; it being apparent that if the cable or link 37 is connected to the segment at the different holes, the angle thetelescopic brace 01' prop was adjusted as it is shown in Fig. 4 with a length of about 10 feet, the runner blade engaged and was partially imbedded in the ground at such an angle as to cause pressure and thrust in the direction 2, illustrated by the arrow on Fig. 1, a condition which counteracted the tendency'of the grader to'slide 'in'thedirection 1, shown by arrow on Fig. 1.
lVhen the grader is to'be moved without operating, the device for carrying the runner may be supported clear of the ground by suitable tackle attached to-the top of the frame where it may" be held by the means illustrated. I l i It is intended, or" course, that the runner should engage the bank, sideo'f the ditch, or deposit at the side of the roadway, and the. structure whiclrit engages at the side of the; roadbed would vary in different locali ties, and hence the term deposit is employed herein as engaged by the runner.
The term deposit? is intended to include any formation at the side of the road which can be engaged by therunner and which will constitute an abutment or resistance'to the movement of the runner in a direction transversely of that in which the road machine is traveling.
In Fig. 8 thereis shown a modified form of plate A which is reversible.
I claim:
1. In a road working machine having a laterally extending brace, a member on the outer end of the brace for engaging deposits at the side of the road for obviating movement of the machine transversely, and means for adjusting the said member to an angle with relation to the direction of movement of the said machine.
2. In a road working machine, a brace 7 comprismg telescopically arranged members having means for securing the members at different positions of adjustment, means for connecting the brace to the machine, anda runner on the outer end of one of the telescopic members forengaging deposits at the side of a road. v p
3. In a road working machine, a beam-like element comprising telescopically assembled elements having means for securing the said elements at different positions of adjustment, means for pivotally connecting the beam-like element to the machine whereby it extends transversely of the'machine, a
runner secured to the outer end of one of the telescopic members, and means for suspending the outer end of the beam-like member when the machine is inoperative.
4. In a road working machine, a brace comprising telescopicallyarranged members having means for securing the member at different positions of adjustment, means for connecting the brace to the machine,1a runner on the outer end of one of the teleseopic members for engaging deposits at the side of a road, means for pivotally connecting the runner to one of the telescopic members of the brace whereby the said runner may oscillate laterally, and means for holding the runner at different positions of adjustment laterally.
5. In a road Working machine, a brace comprising telescopically arranged members having means for securing the members at difierent positions of adjustment, means for connecting the brace to the machine, a runner on the outer end of one of the'telescopic members for engaging deposits at the side of a road, an apertured quadrant carried by the runner, and a brace adapted to be connected to the quadrant in any of the apertures and to a stationary part of the machine for holding the runner at different positions of lateral adjustment,-
