To all 107mm it may concern Be it known that I, GUSTAF ANDE SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of lVashington, have invented a new and useful Chisel, of which the following is a specification.
One object of this invention is to provide a chisel wherein one blade may be substituted readily for another, thereby rendering it unnecessary for a workman to carry a complete set of chisels, each provided with a handle: another object of the invention is so to construct the handle that it will be, well adapted to withstand the blows of a mallet or other percussion tool: a further object of the invention is to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
Although a preferred form has been shown, it will be understood that a mechanic working within the scope of what is claimed, may make changes and alterations, such as his skill may suggest, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing :Figure 1 shows in elevation, a chisel constructed in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1; Fig-v ure 3 is an elevation showing the chisel body.
The tool comprises a body 1 provided in one end with a tapered socket 2 having a rounded end The opposite end of the body 1 has a transverse slot 4 extended entirely through the body and forming a wing 5 and a wing 6, the wing 6 being longer than the wing 5. In the lower end of the win 6 there is a notch or seat 7, and in the lower end of the wing 5 there is a notch or seat 8. The wings 5 and 6 are equipped with transverse openings 9 adapted to receive securing devices, such as screws 10.
The blade of the chisel is marked by the numeral 11 and is provided with a flat tang 12 received between the wings 5 and 6 of the body 1 and located in the slot 4 of the body 1. The blade 11 has shoulders 14 and 15, spaced apart longitudinally of the blade. A lug 16 is formed integrally with the tang 12 and the shoulder 14. A lug 17 is formed integrally with the tang 12 and the shoulder 15. The lug 16 is received in the seat 8 of 1924. serial No. 724,444.

The shoulders 14 and 15 abut against the ends of the respective wings 5 and 6, and the end of the tang 12 abuts against the body 1 at the inner end of the slot 4. There is, therefore, practically no strain on the comparatively small lugs 16 and 17, when a blow is imparted to the chisel handle, the lugs, however, aiding in preventing the blade 11 from shifting crosswise of the body 1 in the slot 4 and serving to take some of the strain elf the securing devices 10. The lugs 16 and 17, being received in theseats 7 "and 8,
respectively, line up the openings 18 in the tang 12 with the openings 9 in the rings 5 I and 6, for the reception of the securing devices 10.
The handle 19 of the chisel is made of some material which is softer than the metal body 1, and it is suggested that the handle may be made of aluminum. has a reduced end 20, adapted tobe wedged g in the socket 2 of the body 1. In order to preserve the handle 19 against damage due to mallet blows, the handle, and particularly the end 20 thereof, is provided with a foot 21, generally in the form of a steel ball, adapted to cooperate with the end 3 of the socket 2. The handle 19 likewise has embedded partially therein, a head 22, which may .bea steel, ball, the head projecting far enough beyond the outer end of the handle so as to receive percussion. The foot 21 may be held in place by a reduced anchor ing stem 23 which tapers as it extends away from the foot 21, and the head 22 may like-v wise be provided with a similar stem 24.
