To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL DoLHAY, a citizen of Hungary, residing at Reedsville, in the county of Preston and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tie and Rail Anchors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tie and rail anchors.
An important object of this invention is to provide means for anchoring rails to ties in such a manner that the rails may be quickly j and easily separated from the ties without damage to either or to the anchoring means.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved form of anchor struct-ure which may he cheaply manufactured, and which will be very eiicient and practical.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed for designating like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a railroad tie with the improved rail anchoring means embodying this invention properly associated therewith and illustrated as `being arranged to connect the rails, shown in section, to the tie,
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1,
Figure 3 is a similar view to Fig. 1, but shows the anchoring means in its inoperative position for permitting the removal of the rails shown in section,

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of this invention, the numeral 5 designates the form of ties embodying this invention which are preferably formed from suitable lengths cut from I-beams. The top 1924. Serial N0. 726,493.
9 of each tie 5 are the anchor elements l() which have the hooked rail engaging portions 11 projecting upwardly through the slots 7 vformed in the tops 6 of the ties. It will be seen that these anchors 10 are arranged in longitudinally alined pairs and that each pair is positionedvon one side of the middle portion 9 of a tie and is associated with either the right hand or the left hand side lof the parallel rails 8.
Each longtudinally alined 'pa-ir of anchor elements 10 is pivotally connected to a separate operating rod 12 which is connected thereto by means of the arms 10a which depend from the body portions of the anchor elements. In Figs. 5, 6 and 7, the pivotal connections between the rods- 12 and the' arms 1()a of the anchor elements 10 are Villustrated as consisting of the longitudinallyextending slots 13 formed in the rods 12 and the longitudinally extending slots 14 formed in the arms 10a which receive the pins 15 that are anchored to the vportions of the rods 12 located on opposite sides o-f the slot 13. Each rod 12 has a threaded end 16 which is adjustably connected to the internally threaded socket 17 which has a reduced stem 18 that extends through an end plate 19 carried by each end of a tie 5. These end plates 19 are provided with the flanges 2O that project laterally therefrom and engage the inner faces of the top and bottom flanges of a tie for the purpose of being secured thereto by the bolts or rivets 21. Each end plate 19 is provided with a cutout portion or recess 22 into which projects the reduced stem 18 of a socket 17 for the purpose of having secured thereto, as by a pin or a key element, a squared head 23 by means of which the socket 17 may be operated for causing longitudinal movement of the rod 12 threadedly connected thereto.
Each rod 12 is provided with a notch or longitudinally extending cutout portion 25 which is adapted for receiving the end 26 of a latch element 27 which is pivotally secured to the middle portion 9 of the tie.
The manner of operating these anchor elements to connect the ties and rails is as follows It will be understood that the rotation-of the socket` 17 will cause the anchor elements 10 to pivot for moving their hooked ends 11 toward and away from each other. The sockets 17 at the opposite ends of a tie may be operated for causing the hooked elements 11, carried by the anchor elements 10, to separate for permitting the rails 8 to be positioned with their base portions between said cooperating pairs of anchor elements. Figure 3 shows the anchor elements shifted for permitting the positioning of the rails 8. The rotation of the sockets 17 in the opposite direction will cause the hooked ends 11 of each cooperating pair of anchor elements 10 to move toward each other 'for 'securely clamping the faces of the Vrails 8 to the ties 5. When these hooked ends 11 have been properly forced against the rails 8, the ends l26 of the pivoted latches 27 will drop into the cutout portions or notches 25 in the rods 12. These latches 27 will then prevent the loosening of the anchor elements. For the purpose of guiding the rods 12 in their longitudinal movement, bearing blocks 28 have been secured Vto the middle portions 9 of the tiesand are slidably engaged by the rods 12. It will be apparent that after the latch elements 27 have been removed from -the notches or cutout portions 25 of the same, and that various changes in the shape, y
size, and arrangement of parts may be re sorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described the invention, I claim l. In a device of the type described, the combination with a rail having a flanged base, of a tie having slots located on opposite sides of said rail base, lan anchor element for each slot pivotally carried by said tie and having a hooked end projecting through the slot, means connected toy each anchor element for operating the same independently of the other element to clamp the rail base between said hooked ends, and means for preventing operation of the last mentioned means for holding the anchor elements in their operated positions.
2. In a device of the type described, the combination with a rail having a flanged base, of a tie having slots located on opposite sides of said rail base, an anchor element for each slot pivotally carried by said tie and having a hooked end projecting through the slot, a notched rod pivotally connected to each anchor element, means carried by said tie fand operatively connected to said rods for pivoting each anchor element independently of the-'other element to clamp the vrail base between said hooked ends, and means carried by said tie and adapted to enter the notches in said rods for holding the same in their operated positions to lock the rail in place.
