Description

H. B. WIDEMAN ARRIER FOR BRAIDING MACHINES March 10, 1925. 1,529,333
Filed March 13, 1924 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Mar. 1Q, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HAROLD B. WIDEMAN, F NILES, MICHIGAN, ASSIG-NOR TO NATIONAL STANDARD COMPANY, OF NILES, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
CARRIER FOR BRAIDING MACHINES.
Application led March 13, 1924. Serial No. 698,922.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD B. WIDEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Niles, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carriers for Braiding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to carriers for braiding machines and the like and is fully described in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a carrier;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2 of Fig. 1; t
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the carrier; and
'Fig l is a section on the line 1-4 of Fig. 2.
The carrier comprises parallel vertical standards or guides 10 which lie upon a base 11 to which a plate 12 is attached by means of a pedestal 13 so that the carrier may be mounted in a braiding machine in a well known manner.
Aligned holes 14 are provided in the upper portion of the standards 10 through which passes a shouldered pin 15 which may be readily inserted or removed and is held in place by means of a hinged keeper 16.
A reel 17 is journaled on the pin 15, one of its flanges having a groove 18 formed therein which is adapted to receive a wire 19 or the like which serves as a brake. One end of this wire is secured to a pin 20 on the standards I0 and the other end is secured to a lever 21, this lever being pivotally mounted on the pin 20. The outer lever 21 is normally drawn downward by a spring 22 thereby tensioning the wire 19 and setting the brake.
A weight 23 is slidably mounted between the standards or guides 10 as shown in Fig. 4, and carries a pin 24 on which is journaled a small sheave 25.
The wire 26 to be fed is first wound on a reel and placed in the device on the pin 15. 'I he end of the wire is then placed over the sheave 25 and out through the eye 27 in the upper end of the standards. The pull of the braiding machine on this wire, not shown, maintains the tension therein almost constant, thereby supporting the weight 23, which rises and falls to accommodate the necessary movement of the wire 26 during the braiding operation.
The weight 23 has a shoulder 28 which engages the outer end of the lever 21 as the weight reaches the upper end of its movement, thereby lifting the lever 21 against the action of the spring 22 and releasing the tension on the wire brake band 19, thereby releasing the reel 17 and, owing to the tension of the wire 26, causing the reel to feed out. When thisI happens the weight 23 drops a short distance until the spring 22 again sets the brake band 19. As the wire 26 continues to feed through the eye 27, the weight 23 will again be brought up into contact with the lever 2l releasing the brake, when more wire will again be fed out.
The tension on the wire is determined largely by the weight of the member 23 and in order to vary the weight of this member, an iron plate 29, is placed within the member 23 and secured thereto by means of a band 30 and a screw 31. This plate may readily be removed and another of a different weight inserted in order to maintain the desired tension on the wire 26.
lVhile I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes therefore in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as possible in View of the prior art.
I claim:
1. In a braiding machine, a carrier for feeding wire comprising a frame, a reel journalled in the upper portion of the frame, a brake drum operably connected to said reel, a brake-band on said drum, a spring-actuated lever normally applying said band on the drum, a sheave under which the wire passes, and a member carried by said sheave said member having replaceable weights removably secured thereto, said lever being movable by said weighted member to release said brake on the upward movement of the pulley.
2. In a braiding machine, a carrier for member carried by said sheave, and meails feeding Wire Comprising a frame, a reel for Varying the Weight of said member, sald Journalled in the frame, a brake drum operlever being movable by sall,Weiglued!naem- 10 Y ably cori'iifetjel izo said reel, a brake-band on ber ,tkoi release Sail brake; Ong.: iipyvard said drum, a Spring-actuated leve normally movemenf of vthe pulley. applying said band on the drum, a s'leave underlv 'y-hic'li' the viiie'l j iaMssesyaweiglilgeflv
