UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIGE,
JOHN H. USHER, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPENSATlNG-POISES FOR SCALE-BEAMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,933, dated July 14, 1874 application filed June 27, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. USHER, of Buffalo, Erie county and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in GounterpoiseFi-ames for Beam-Scales, of which the following is a specification:
This invention has for its object to simplify the construction of counterpoise-frames for scale-beams, whereby the scale is rendered more minute in indicating the weight of objects.
The invention consists of a counterpoiseframe constructed of a base-piece having ahorizontal slot for the purpose of lateral adjustment on the beam by means of set-screws, and having vertical arms at each end of the base which are provided with slots for the vertical adjustment of the rod carrying the counterpoise-weight.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the scale-beam having my counterpoise-frame applied thereto. an end view, showing the slots for the vertical adjustment of the counterpoise-weight.
The beam A and extension 13 thereof are of the usual construction. The counterpoiseframe is constructed in two parts, 0 0, the base of which are each provided with a longitudinal slot, a, through which passes a set screw, and whereby the frame can be adjusted laterally, and the section of the frame at each end thereof is provided with a vertical arm, D, having an elongated slot, 1), in which the ends of the screw'rod E carrying Fig. 2 is i the counterpoise-weight F is secured, and by this means the vertical adjustment of the weight is secured. The object of making the frame of two parts is to permit the ready introduction of the screw-rod E, which is accomplished by sliding the sections of the frame away from each other, inserting the ends of the rod in the vertical slots b, and brin in g the section toward each other. The screwrod E is retained in any position to which it may be adjusted in the vertical slots by means of the nuts 0, which are screwed on the rod to clamp the vertical arms 1). By constructing the counterpoise-frame as above described it may be adjusted with ease and rapidity, and enables the scale to indicate with great mi nuteness the weight of the object being weighed, and, further, the frame is more simple and cheaper of production than those heretofore constructed.
I claim as my invention The improved counterbalance-frame having the base 0 G, with slot or slots a for the lateral adjnetment, and the arms I) D, with the slots 1) Z) r'or the vertical adjustment, of the counterpoise-rod, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN H. USHER.
Witnesses J. R. DRAKE, T. H. Pnnsons.
