Description

March 1 0,v 1925. 1,529,313
w. KWIATKOWSKI ET AL CHAIN GRATE STOKER CLIP Filed March 19, 1924 if I ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 10, 1.925,
UNITED STATES PATENT orFic CHAIN-GRATE STOKER CLIP.
Application filed March 19, 1924. Serial No. 700,245.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that WLADISLAW KwiA'r KOWSKI and HIroLrr WIESCHON, citizens of Poland, residing at Astoria, Long Island, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chain-Grate Stoker Clips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has general reference to mechanical stokers for furnaces, of the type known as chain grate stokers, and which comprise an endless grate element mounted on suitable supports and which travels along the fire chamber.
This invention has particular reference to one of the units, or clips, which form the grate, and it has for an object the provision of a novel clip constructed to permit of ready replacement of individual clips when desired, without effecting the grate structure as a whole.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the object and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1. of the drawing is an underside perspective View of one form of our improved clip.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary underside plan view showing a number of clips in assembled relation.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a like view to Fig. 2, but showing a modified construction.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of the retractile element of the clip shown in Fig. 4c.
6 is a side view showing another form of clip.
As here embodied our improved chain grate clip comprises a bar 10 which is suitably curved or arched longitudinally on its outer side, and is formed with grooves 11 to permit of passage of air. The bar 10 has its ends formed the usual manner complementary to one another. In grate clips as ordinarily constructed the clip or bar is formed with a pair of integral claws on its inner side which grip a transverse supporting member and thereby are held in place, this construction being disadvantageous in that if one clip is broken, as frequently happens, the whole row of clips may have to be dIl SIHOLIHtBd to permit ofreplacing the broken c 1p.
To obviate this difliculty we form the bar 10 with only one integral claw 14 which engages one side of the support, while the other side of the support is engaged by a movable claw 15 which is formed on a slide block 16 mounted on a flat surface 17 on the inner face of the bar and which is guided by means of a pair or'rods 18 which extend along the bar and are fixed at their opposite ends to the latter, these rods passing through grooves 19 in the side of the claws,
at the base thereof, and thereby holding the block against lateral displacement. The surface 17 is of suflicient length to permit of the block 16 being drawn back sufiiciently to free the claw 15 from the supporting element.
To hold the block 16 in position with the claw thereof engaging the supporting element we may provide the tension spring 20 shown in F 6 and which is connected at opposite ends respectively to the block and the bar 10 and which is located in a suitable recess in the bar. Instead of this spring we may employ a locking bolt or strap which extends from side to side of the grate, being passed behind the blocks 16 and between the surface 17 and the rods 18 and thereby acts to hold the blocks against movement to release the claws 15. This strap 25 may have one end inturned laterally as at 26 and secured as by the screw 27 to the side clip of the grate or to any other suitable or usual side element on the grate, the end 26 of the strap being here shown as recessed at 28 to receive the head of the screws 27.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 4 we substitute for the strap 25 a slightly different one 25' which has a number of notches or recesses 30 formed in the side thereof which engages the blocks 16, while the latter are also formed with recesses 31 on their adjacent ends into which the tongues or projections on the strap 25 between the recesses 30 in the latter may be received when the strap is slightly shifted. The parts are otherwise as above described, except that it will be understood that they are so proportioned that the claws 15 on any block 16 may be freed by moving the end of the block into the recess 30 in the strap. Thisv constructionhas the advantage oyejr 'thatf shown-.in Fig. 3 in that the strap need only be moved longitudinally a slight di tance ,t fr e t e c aw "Having thus described our invention what We claim as new. and desire, to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows: 7 i
1. A clip for chain grate stokers compris- 1ng a bar hav ng an integral claws on its, rear face, and presenting a- Hat surface on its grear -facezathacent the said cl.aw,.a block mounted slidably on said fiat surfaceand having a claw thereon adapted to co-operate witlnthesaid integral claw guide means for said blockcomprising a pair of rods mounted on the bar and extending substantially parallelto the said-flat surface and passing through grooves in theopposite sides of the block, and means releasably holding the i said block in normal position} with the claw thereon c -QpeIa'ting with the integral claw v onitheiclip.
, ,2. ,A clip; for chain grate stokers comprising a'barhavlng an integral claw, a slide block onsaidvbar, and a claw on said slide blockadapted to cooperate. with the first claw, and. a guide re1en1e 1t-;for, said block comprising-irods mounted on the-bar and passing through grooves in the sides of the comprisii'ig' 'a strap" inserted behind said ,bloclrandretained against transverse disfpa ssing, through grooveslin the sides of the block, means for locking. said slide block comprising a. strap lnserted behind said .block and retained against transverse displacement by said rods, said straphbeing formed with a recessin the side thereof adjacentthe block, and said blockhaving its adjacent end formedwitli a..recess, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof .we have aflixed our signatures.
