s sheets-Sheet s TTUHNEY l WMM,
Filed Nov. 8, 1919A along in contact with the ironingsurface 18 of the shoe 17 whenV the feed roller is pressed against the/shoe. The body por- Vvtion of the'rolleritself is preferably built Vup of strips 22 ofwood suitably glued to# gether, and at each end a metal ycap 23 is 'slipped over a Vreduced portion 24 of the roll and is secured thereto by screws 25, see
Y Figure 6. The cap has a hole bored in its center and atrunnion 26 projects from said hole, being driven'tightly in place and havingv aninner head `to prevent its escape.
' This'methodof fittinga cap over a reduced portion. of the body o fthe roll, which can ybe turned atthe same time as' the roll itself,
results'in the trunnions 26 being central and in alinement Vwithout Vany trouble or pains.
' Y The presser roll -is mounted by means of said ltrunnion's26,26 in the forwardly and( upwardly inclined arms 27,27 of bell-,crank Vlevers 28, 28 which are fulcrumed one-,on veach side V4frame of the machinejust below the shoe 17, as at 29, 44. VThe points vof "fulcruming Aof l the bell-cranks are so disposed that when they are swung the Apresser roll is carried along substantially a radial line of the curved ironing surface 18 and Y v `thus moveddirectly toward and away from said ironing surface.
At about the middle of said shaft 33 is a forwardly )projecting arm 35'which is connected by means of a sti helical spring 36 to a treadle `37 fulcrumed upon theV rear lower angle ,bar
Y :5, of the Amachine andprojecting under the 1 front angle bar- 4to receive the foot of the operator as `at 38. Obviously by these means the presser :roll 21can beswung toward the i" heated ironing shoe 17, and a spring L39 for the vpurpose stated.v
suitably disposed, as for example extending from thelower end of one of the bell-cranks 30 to the rear ,edge of its adjacent side frame,
serves to `normally.hold it away from the ironing shoe in idlevposition, as shown in Figure 2. To enable the presserroll 21 tol be locked in` various postions adjacent to the ironing shoe 17, to accommodate different thicknesses of articles vbeing ironed, I
vhave provided a vstirrup k40 depending from the frontrangle bar '4 for the treadle 38v to i move up and downY in andhaving upon one of its sides stops 41, 41 `under which the treadle'fmayfbe caught at different heights Inl order to rotate the. 'presserY roll 21 :one
Yofts trunnions 26fl1as`fast upon its end n outside Voneof-'they side frames, as yfor, ex-
ample the side frame l2, agear wheel 42 y which meshes with a pinion 43 turning upon rear upright of said side frame. A similar extension plate 53 reaching to the top of the side frame affords a bearing for the stub shaft 44, and a broad bracket 54 onthe outside of said plate affords another bearing for its outer' end, as well asguards the wormwheel 45 and pinion 43. The bottom Vofthis bracket furthermore is of `a box-like formation to receive the worm. 46 and provides at its front wall a bearing for the end of the worm shaft 47 and at its rear wall receives a bushing for said shaft, held in place by a set screw'56. Y
Y By reasonjof the Ypinion 43 which drives the roll 21 being upon the same Vaxial line as the bell-cranks 28 which swing the roll, it
is obvious that the roll can be swung without disturbing its drive, the gear-wheel 42' simply rolling along the periphery of theV pinion 43. v
Front and rear leaves 57, 58 slide removably into the same plane as the center board 12 of the lower table which receives the ironed'goods as they come from between the roll 21 and shoey 17 ysaid leaves being supported .by cleats, 57?, 58a respectively, which enterabove the angle bars 6, 6 and beneath the center boa-rd 12. vBy thisv construction,
the side Aframes as has. been already described, the side frames are enabled to be continuous so that the roll 21 andfits, driv-k ing parts can be accurately lined `up with respect to the motor y50 below.
VUpon thefront edge. of the upper part of one of the sideframes, as 1," between the A and the mounting of the center board upon Y two tables, are lugs 59, 59between which is hinged a removable pin 6() a socket member 61 for a clothes rail 62 which willthus swlng intoclosed position asshownjin Figc ure 4 or open outward for vuse as shown'in Figures 2 and 3'. 'A hole 63 in the feed board 15 in alinement with the pin`60`facilitates its removal and-insertion. v f i Obviously, various detail modifications and changes may be made in manufacturing my skilled in the artl without departing from the spirit and' scope lof the invention, Vand 'I do not wish to be understood as restricting improved -roningv machine byV those myself except as requiredby the following c claims when construed in lthe' light of the prior art.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. In an ironing machine, the combination with a shoe, of a presser roll, a rotary member for driving said roll, a bell crank fulcrumed upon the axial line of said rotary member, said presser roll beingmounted upon one arm of said bell crank, a rock shaft having a crank arm directly engaging the other arm of said bell crank lever to swing the same, and a treadle connected to said rock shaft to rotate the same.
2. In an ironing machine, the combination of opposite upright end frames, a lever adjacent each end frame fulcrumed to swing in a plane parallel thereto and having one arm projecting upward and theI other arm extending downward longitudinally of the end frame to swing back and forth horizontally between the front and back of said end frame, a rock shaft journaled in said side frames below the lower arms of said levers, upwardly extending crank arms on said rock shaft having slot-andspin connections with a said lower arms of the levers, a forwardly of the machine, and a verticallyl disposed coiled s ring connecting thefree end of said forwar ly extending arm on the rock shaft board and clamping the latter in place, said f cross bars being spaced from said board, and a removable table leaf having at one lateral edge projecting cleats adapted tobe inserted over one of said cross bars and beneath said table board.
4. In an ironing machine", opposite vertical end frames each having at its inner side a horizontal rib, a table board resting at its ends upon said ribs, means for holding said table board against said ribs, cross bars connecting the end frames beneath the table board and secured to the under side of said ribs in spaced relation to said board, `and a removable tableileaf having at one lateral edge projecting cleats adapted to be inserted between one of said cross bars andv the table board.
