Be itknown. that I, CHARLES F. KETTER- JNG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Dayton, county of Montgomery, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the strnction of the engine.
following is a full, clear, and exact de' scription.
This invention relates to power plants in-' cluding an internal-combustion engine and has vfor its principal ob ect the provisions of improvement in the construction of theplant, and more particularly in the conlhis application is a division of my copending application Serial No. 225,902, filed April 1st, 1918.
It is an ohiect of the present invention to provide an oil deflecting device for preventing oil, which is thrown by oil throwing devices, being carried into the explosion rhambcr'of an engine.
Further objects and advantages ofthe present invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein a preferred form of one embodiment of'the present invention is clearly shown. In the drawings: 7

Referring to the drawings, indicates an internal-combustion, engine having a crank case 21 providing a chamber and mounted upon a base 22. Crank case 21 is provided with an end cover 21. A cylinder 23, is mounted upon the crank case, supporting a cylinder head 21, which is rovided with an explosion chamber 25. i l'linder head 2-1 has an inlet passage 26 and an exhaust passage 27 which lead into the explo sion chamber 25. A fiat partition 28 is provided which is apertured and forms a passage for communication between chamber and passages 26 and 27, and which serves as a seat forintake valve 29 and exhaust valve 30.

the construction of which is clearly described in in above mentioned copending application. reath'er tube 39 is in direc communication with a casting 40, serving as the end cover for the breather tube and provides a passage from the breather to the intake passage 26, whereby communication is obtained between the crank case 21 and the explosive chamber 25.
The entrance to the breather-tube passage is exposed -to the direct action of the splashing within the crank case, and to prevent the passage of oil out through the breather tube passage, the entrance into the passage 38 from the crank case 21 is provided with a baiiie 11 which consists of a plate provided at one e d with tongues -12 and 3, at its sides with flanges 4A, and with a tongue 45 along the -other end, said .tongues and flanges cooperating with a shoulder formed by the junction of the breather passage and crank case to hold the baffle 41 inposition. Apertures 46 are pro-- vided and are formed by punching out and bending over members 417 which then act as deflectors to deflect oil, which is splashed by the'crank arm-and oil throwing ear, there by preventing it from passing t rough the passage 38. It will be observed that the deflectors which are arranged at an'angle to the breather tube passage not 'only break up the moving oil-laden air but also deflectit laterally as it enters the passage, thereby suddenly changing its direction of movement and tendin to throw down or so arate out the particles of oil which then tl dw back into the crankcase by the most con-f venient path. i

It will 0 apparent from the foregoing description, that the quantity of crankcase lubricant which enters the combustion chamher will be reduced to avery small value by. c meansof the present invention. The bafiie prevents the direct splashing of excessive quantities of oil into the passa e 3 8, and alsdseparates to a large degree the 011 mist from the air which 'is forced out of the crank case by the action of the piston. The result is that very little crank case oil will enter the combustion chamber to form a carin combination, an engine cylinder, a crank' shaft, a piston. in thecylinder, a connecting for the piston and crank shaft, a crank case for housmg the crank shaft, said crankcase having anobliquely disposed upper side wall connected to theScylinder at its upper end and having a Passage extending therethrough in the p ane of rotation of the crank, and a baffle arranged inside said crankcase and across the mouth 0'? said passage and 1n the plane of said obliquely disposed wall.

In an engine of the character described, 1n comb1nat1on, an engine cylinder, a crankshaft, a piston in the cylinder, a connecting rod for the piston and crank shaft, a crank case for housing ti 1 crank shafhgaid crank case having an obliquely disposed upper side wall connected to the cylinder at its upper end and havinga passage extending therethrough in the lane of rotation of the crank, a bafile isposed across the mouth of said passage and in the plane of said obliquelydisposed wall, and means including a plurality of tongues at one-end, of the baflie for engaging the interior walls of the crank case and said passage to hold the bathe in position.
I 4. In an engine of the character described, in combination, an engme cylinder and cylinder head having an engine intake passage,
a piston in the cylinder, an engine crank case containing a lubricant adapted to be splashed about therein,. a crank shaft journaled therein, a connectin rod for the piston and crank, shaft, a breat 1er passage through the wall of the crank case and connecting the interior thereof with the intake passage, and
a bafile located inside said crankcase and within the opening leading therefrom into said breather passage.
5. In an engine of the character described, in combination, an engine cylinder, a crank case thereforya breather passage through the wall of the crank case, a bafile for the breather passage arranged inside the crankcase and within the opening leading therefrom into said breather passage, said baflle having a lurality of tongues on its pcripheral e go for holding the bafiie in operative position.
6. In an engine of the character described,- 1n combination, an engine cylinder, a crank.
case-therefor, a breather passage through the wall of the crankcase, a baffle for the breather passage, said baflle having tongues-v at opposite ends thereof and adapted to engage the wall of the crank case for holding the baiile in position. i 4
