To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN HAYs HAM- MOND, J12, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Gloucester, county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fluid Containers, of which the following is a specification.
Some of the objects of this invention are to provide in a container or receptacle for holding a fluid, or liquid, improved means whereby a perforation or other opening made in a normally imperforate portion of the receptacle or container by a rapidly moving bullet or other projectile, or by other means, may be quickly sealed or covered to prevent the escape of fluid through such perforation or opening; and to provide other improvements as will appear hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic plan view of a receptacle constructed in accordance with thisinvention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 a section along line 33 of Fig.1; Fig. 4 a section along line 44 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 a section along line 55 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, one embodiment of this invention comprises a substanwith the opposite ends of the botom wall 11.
The top wall 16' is provided with an inlet 17 through which the tank mav be filled with a fi1uid or liquid or other substanceor mater1a Surrounding and preferably fixedly secured to the bottom wall 11 and side and end walls 12 to 15 of the tank 10, isa layer or covering of material 20, such, for instance, as leather or other :material, but pre'ferablysuch a material as will not form a lip or burr, or which will form only a readily yielding lip or burr when pierced by a bullet or other rapidly moving object.

is a strip of sheet material, such, for instance, as oil silk or any other suitable material which is impermeable to fluids. The longitudinal edges 26 and 27 of this strip 25 are parallel to each other and arranged in planes coincident with the outer side surfaces of the portions 'of the covering 20 which are secured to the side walls 12 and 13 of the tank 10. The opposite ends of this strip 25 are wound about two cylindrical horizontal parallel drums 30 and 31 which are rigid and coaxial with spindles 32 and 33 respectively which are rotatably supported in bearings provided therefor in rigid brackets 34 and 35 which are fixedly secured to the walls of the tank 10, whereby the drums 30 and 31 are mounted to rotate about fixed substantially parallel horizontal axis. Contacting with and covering the outer surface of the strip 25 and holding the strip 25 slidably against the outer surface ofthe inner layer 20 is an outer layer 36of material, the longitudinal edges 37'and 37 of which are parallel and flush with the longitudinal edges of the strip 25'and the end edges '38 and 39 which are flush with the upper horizontal surface of the tank. This outer layer 36 may be of the same material as the inner layer 20 or of any other suitable material and is held in place by means of screws extending through projections on the brackets 3 1 and 35 and by other means as will appear hereinafter.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination with a container for fluid, comprising a" bottom wall, and (two pairs of walls extending f upwardlytherefrom, of a strip of sheetamaterial impervious to :fluid surrounding said bottoni-wall and one of said; pairs of said upwardly extending walls, said lstrip I being movable 8 with respect to said container, to closeany aperture that might' be. formed in -ginen-=nor.- Imally imperforate portions ofsaid bottom wall and said two ofv said upwardly extende ing walls, and apair of strips orsaid. material extending upon opposite sides of said container andmovable' with respect thereto to close any aperture that-Jnaytbe :formed in the other of said=pairs of said upwardly extending walls.

said strips having substantially parallel edges and being movable with respect to said container in the direction of said edges, and two of said strips being arranged upon opposite sides of said first mentioned strip and movable in parallel planes substantially perpendicular to said first mentioned strip.
6. The combination with a container for a fluid, of a plurality of strips of material impervious to fluid arranged to be moved with respect to said container to close any aperture that may be made in certain normally imperforate portions of said container, one of said strips having portions thereof movable in substantial parallelism while another portion of said strips is moving at a right angle to the other mentioned portions, and two of said strips being disposed to move in substantial parallelsm in planes approximately coincident with the edges of the first mentioned strip.
7. In a fluid container, the combination with a plurality of sheets in parallel with each other for retaining the liquid within the container, of means for moving at least one of said sheets in the plane of the sheet.
8. The combination with a vessel having a pair of walls in spaced parallel relation and a third Wall interconnecting said first named. walls, of a strip of sheet material impervious to the flow of fluid into and out of said vessel, and positioned adjacent said walls, said strip being movable with respect to said vessel to close any aperture that might be formed in given normally impersaid vessel and surrounding one of said pairs of said last named walls, said strip being movable with respect to said vessel to close any aperture that might be formed in given normally imperforate portions of the walls surrounded by said strip, and a pair of strips of said material extending upon the opposite sides of said vessel, and movable with respect thereto to close any aperture that might be formed in the other of said pairs of walls. a
