Description

March 10. 19.25. v
Patented Mar. 10, 1925.
ATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HOWARD, OF CROSBY, ENGLAND.
STEAM SEPARATQR.
' 7 Application filed. April 22, 1924. Serial No. 708,195.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HOWARD, a subjcct of the King of Great Britain, residing in Crosby, in the county of Lancaster and Kingdom of England, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Steam Separators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in steam separators. It is the object of the invention to provide a device which is particularly suitable for use in connection with steam whistles.
The invention consists in a steam separator which is mounted immediately adjacent to the valve of the whistle instead of adjacent the boiler or at other remote points. The invention further consists in a steam separator employed for use in connection with steam whistles or the like apparatus in which a curved pipe is employed from the inner wall of which a steam pipe is co-n nected substantially at right angles so that the separated water follows the direction of the curved pipe while the steam passes through a vertical pipe to the whistle.
The invention is more particularly de scribed with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an outside elevation of the device.
Figure 2 is a corresponding plan view.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line AA of Fig. 2.
In the preferred form of the invention shown in the drawings, the device comprises a semi-circular or otherwise curved pipe 1 mounted on the flange 2 of the usual stop valve 3 for passing steam to a whistle or other device fitted to the flange end 1. It will be seen that this semicircular pipe 1 slopes downwards from the inlet end at-the top of a short vertical extension 5 to the outlet 6 to the flange 7 to which a receptacle for condensed steam in the form of a trap drain or other device is connected as shown at 11. Furthermore, this pipe 1 gradually tapers downfrom the inlet to the outlet 6.
Steam is led ofi' by an upwardly inclined connect-ion 8, leading away at right angles to the path of fluid through the pipe 1 and then again away at an angle to the horizontal to be connected to the whistle or other device by the flange 4. As water may collect by the condensation of steam between the top of the extension pipe 5 and the valve in the chest 3, this may be drained away by a small drain pipe, such as indicated in dotted lines at 9, which may further be provided with a needle or the like valve 10.
This device meets the ditficulty caused by sudden blowing forward of a large volume of condensed water in that the condensed water. is carried past the vertical pipe to the drain while the steam rises through the vertical pipe. By placing the device in proximity to the whistle, the separator also deals with water which is condensed in the length of the pipe lying between the boiler and the whistle, or other device.
I declare that what I claim is 1. A steam separator comprising a trap for condensate, a curved pipe leading steam and condensate towards said trap and a pipe for dry steam leading from said curved pipe and inclined towards the centre of curvature of the curved pipe. 7
2. A steam separator comprising a trap for condensate, a curved pipe leading steam and condensate towards said trap, and a pipe for dry steam leading upwardly from said curved pipe and inclined towards the centre of curvature of said curved pipe.
3. A steam separator comprising a trap for condensate an eccentrically curved pipe leading steam and condensate towards said trap and a pipe for dry steam leading upwardly from said curved pipe and inclined inwardly of said curved pipe.
4. A steam separator comprising a trap for condensate, a curved pipe inclined downwardly from inlet to outlet leading steam and condensate towards said trap and a pipe for dry steam, leading from said curved pipe, situated intermediate the ends of the path of flow of condensate in said curved pipe.
5. A steam separator comprising a trap for condensate, a curved pipe inclined downwardly from inlet to outlet leading steam and condensate towards said trap and a pipe for dry steam, leading from said curved pipe and inclined towards the centre of curvature of the curved pipe.
6. A steam separator comprising a trap for condensate, a curved pipe inclined downwardly from inlet to outlet and reduced in diameter towards the. outlet, leading steam and condensate towards said trap and a pipe for dry steam, leading from said curved pipe situated intermediate the ends of the path of flow' of condensate in said curved a pipe.
7. A steam separatorcomprising atrap for condensate, a curved pipe inclined downwardly from inlet to outlet and'reduced' in diameter towards the outlet leading steam and condensate towards said trap and a pipe for dry steam, leading from said curved pipe and inclined towards the centre of curvature of the curved pipe.
