To all'whiom itmag concern:
Beit known that I, NIA'RTO'ZUCCATO,fl SU J- ject of the King 'ofjI taly,residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and 5 State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and, useful. ln'iprovements -in Corking Machines, of which the'fol lowi'ngis 'a specification. y
This invention relatesto corking m-achines and it has more. particularreference to manually actuated machines for corking bottles, the primary object being 'to provide a sink ple and efiicient device whereby corksmay be expeditiously inserted into t-he necl'zs of bottlesand the like. Y I
Another object of! this invention is to provide a simple and reliable machine of the nature referred to which may bereadily clamped on the edgeof a table or other-ap proprjiate structure. 7
Still. further the invention has foranob ject the provision of a corkingu machine which comprises but few and-simple parts i that are easily assembled' and'whenso assembled are; not liable to; get out of ord'er.
With the foregoing-end other objects in view as will later on be more apparent the invent-ion consists essentially .in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein-after fully described and more particularly pointed out by the ap pended claims. I
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specication, and in which like characters of reference'designate the same parts in both the views.
Figure l is a broken perspective view of my improved corking machine with the op erating lever shown raised or out of use, and,
Figure 2 is a similar perspective view but showing the part-in the operative position.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 10 designates a substantially rectangular box or casing which is provided with a depending bracket 11 and thumb screw 12 by means of which the device may be readily clamped on to a table or in other convenient positions. Extending laterally from one end of the aforesaid box 10 is a forked arm 13 in which is pivoted by a pin 14 the operating lever 15. This operating lever as will be seen from the drawings is of somewhat zig-zag mttern and it has appropriately attached thereto at 16 a rod or plunger 17' provided with ahead 18 that serves in use as lateron explained te -force the cork into the neck of a bottle; Slidably mounted within the aforesaid" box 10 is a somewhat cruciform member '19 which is provided with "obliquely inclined ribs 20 which gLll'ClGtllOSZlitl-111G111- ber 19 to andlfrointhebox' 10 and? it wilhbc seenon an examination ofFigure '1 that there is pivoted to thiscruciform iii-ember by a lug :21 a connectingrod 2am turn pivotallyattached: at23'to the aforesaid open at'ing lever 15'. It is alsote be noted-that the aforesaid: cruciform member 1-9: is I provided with avertically grooved portion or an 21 which as later on explained is adapted to co-opera-te- 'with a corresponding jaw whensgripping a cork, said j=aw25 in'turn beingfor-med integral with-or attached to the aforesaid-box 10;
Vertically upstanding within the box 10 is a pin 26'which' limits the movement of the cruciform: member in one-direction, whilst the end of the box 10 limits it in thereverse direction. -Hingedly mounted inone corner of; the. box 110: and 'under the action of a retractile spring 27 is a hinged member 28 which is provided with a lip portion 29 which in use rides over the face 30 of the juxtaposed part of the cruciform member 19 and serves to compress the cork compactly between the opposed jaws 24 25. Projecting downwardly from the underside of thebox 10 and axially central wit-h the aforesaid jaws 2%25 when collapsed or moved toward each other is a depending tubular nozzle 31 through which the cork compressed as above set forth is forced by engagement of the headed part 18 of the rod 17 thereon and as will be clearly understood on an examination of the views. A bottle neck is indicated on the drawings in dotted lines by the numeral 32 and it will be readily understood that the bottle can be held by one hand beneath the nozzle 31 when itis desired to cork same. A plunger device 38 under the action of a compression spring 3a is housedwithin the aforesaid box 10 and is provided at its lower part with a crescentshaped member 35 for engagement with the neck of the bottle, and it will be noted that when the operating lever 15 is forced downwardly as shown in Figure 2 that it contacts with this plunger device 34 and thereby prevents the cork from being forced too far into the neck of the bottle. A. lid or cover 36 is appropriately secured on the flanged top of the box 10 so that the parts are protected from damage and the like.
Upon throwing the lever 15 from the position shown in Figure 1 to that shown in Figure 2, the member 19 is moved to the right by link 22, the aw 2a passing in front of pin 26 and the wall 30 passing in rear of said pin until the latter occupies a position inside the member 19 and limits movement thereof by coming in contact with the transverse wall thereof. In the meantime jaws 24, 25 and plate 29 have compressed the cork and plunger 17 has forced the cork into the bottle, also member has been operated to strip the bottle from the machine.
From the foregoing description and an examination of the drawings the operation and eilectiveness of my improved corking machine will be clearly apparent without further description, and whilst- I have shown and described the best form of my invention at present known to me, the same is susceptible of Various detailed changes and other arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and essential features thereof and it is hereby intended to include all such reasonable modifications as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A bottle corking machine comprising a rectangular body having a depending cylindrical cork guide thereon, a rigid cork forming jaw within said body, a slide within said body, diagonally extending guiding arms on said slide engaging the interior of the body for guiding movement of the slide, said slide comprising spaced substantially parallel portions, a cork forming jaw upon one of said parallel portions, a cam on the other parallel portion, and a pivotally mounted spring actuated cork compressing member carried by said body and adapted to be moved into cork compressing position by said cam upon movement of the slide into bottle corking position.
2. A bottle corking machine comprising a rectangular body having a depending cylindrical cork guide thereon, a rigid cork forming jaw within said body, a slide within said body, diagonally extending guiding arms on said slide engaging the interior of the body for guiding movement of the slide, said slide comprising spaced substantIally parallel portions, a cork forming jaw upon one of said parallel portions, a cam on the other parallel portion, a pivotally mounted spring actuated cork compressing member carried by said body and adapted to be moved into cork compressing position by said cam upon movement of the slide into bottle corking position, a hand lever pivotally carried by said body, a cork engaging plunger pivotally carried by said hand lever, and a coupling rod pivotally connecting the hand lever and slide.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
MARIO ZUCCATO.
