PACKING BOX.

To all whom, it 'may conce/m:
Be it known that I, FRANK J. YEIigat citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description ot the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements `in packing boxes and more particularly to what. is known as a floating stalling or packing box adapted to be used on any rotating or reciprocating rod that requires packing, the main object of the present invention being the 'provision of a floating casing or packing box adapted to be applied to the rod support whether itbe a cylinder or the like and provide suitable packing for the movement of the rod, said casing being arranged so that it may readily adjust itself to alignment of the rod and also vibrate with the rod thus relieving the strain from the packing of the rod.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a floating stutiing or packing box wherein all wearing parts can be quickly and readily renewed at very little cost and wherein the same will adapt itself to a very high pressure without cutting or wearing the rod. A
A further object ot thc invention is the provision of a stalling or packing box of the above character whereby the parts which retain the box ink position are provided with suitable lubricant whereby to eliminate any wearing on the parts during the vibration or movement ot the casing whereby the casing may move or vibrate very readily and be retained in alignment with the rod which works therein.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claim and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
The drawing illustrates a longitudinal sectional view 'taken through my improved stuffing or packing box with the rod in position, the stuffing or packing box being illustrated here as applied to the end of a cylinder.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a portion of a cylinder casing having the usual rod opening 2 and further provided with a cavity 3 communicating with the rod opening Qnnd preferably cylindrical in form. y
The inovablerod which is generally indicated by the numeral 4, is mounted within the opening 2 of the cylinder and extends out through the cavity 3. In the present instance, therod is illustrated as supposedly of the reciprocating type and surrounding the rod is a packing box or casing, the lnner end of said casing being arranged Within the cavity 3 and adapted to entirely surround the rod 4. The casing or housing 5 is provided with an annular recess 6 terminating into a shoulder 7 and arranged within this annular recess 6 is the packing material 8. This packing material or stuit- .ing may comprise flexible metallic packing,
fiber packing or metal rings in accordance with the requirements desired. The casing or box 5 is provided intermedate of its ends with an annular flange 9 adapted torest against the end of the cylinder 1 to retain the box 5 against inner movement.
The casing or box 5 is retained in position within the cavity 3 by means of a removable collar 11 which is angular in cross sec-tion as illustrated, one side of the collar bearing against the outer face ot the cylinder 1, while the other end projects inwardly toward the casing 5 over the flange 9 and as this collar 11 is bolted to the cylinder 1 through the medium of the bolts 12, it will securely retain the casing 5 in position within the cavity 3.` Disposed between the inner edge of the collar 11 and the end of the cylinder 1 are suitable liner rings 10, one or more of which can be removed to compensate for the wear upon the inner or outer face of the flange 9. In assembling the device, the casing or box 5 is placed in position over the rod 4 and moved into the cavity 3 until the flange 9 contacts with the outer end of the cylinder 1. The collar 11 is then moved over the outer end of the casing 5 until it contacts with the llange 9, the nuts 13 are vthen threaded upon the bolts 12 to retain the collar 11 in position and 'hold the casing 5 within the cavity 3.
It will be noted in the drawing that the outer end of the casing or housing 5 is provided With screw threads 14 and mounted upon this threaded portion of the casing or stutling box 5 is a removable flange 15. In
order to prevent rotating movement of the casing' 5 beyond a certain predetermined distance a suitable pin or -pins 16 are threaded through the flange 15 and adapted to engage with and seat in sockets 16 in the collar 11 to hold the saine in position after the flange 15 has been screwed down tightly upon the outer end of the stufling box 5.
After the stuffing box 5 has been placed in position within the cavity 3, surrounding the rod 4, the packing 8 is then placed in position within the recess 6 and in order to retain the packing in position and keep the same under proper pressure, a movable sleeve 17 is mounted within the stuffing box at the outer end ot' the recess 6 and in order to adjust this sleeve 17 within the stuffing box, a flange 18 is formed upon the outer end of the sleeve 17 through which the adjusting bolts 19 project,said adjusting bolts being carried by the flange 15. The adjusting bolts 19 are threaded into the flange 15 and extend up through the flange 18 and suitable nuts 20 are mounted upon the outer ends of the bolts whereby turning movement of the nuts 20 will force the flange 18 inwardly toward the flange 15, thus moving the sleeve 17 inwardly against the packing 8.
It will be noted that in placing the stuffing box 5 in position around the rod 4, there is considerable clearance between the walls of the cavity 3 and the exterior of the stufng box and that suitable clearance is provided between the collar 11 and the flange 9 as well as that portion of the stuffing box which is arranged adjacent the collar 11 whereby through any vibrating movement on the part of the rod 4, the stuffing box 5 may move with the vibrations of the rods so as to retain the alignment of the stufling box with respectto the rod so as to keep the packing 8 into close contact with the rod 4 at all times.
As a general rule, greater or less wear is bound to occur at the point where the rod 4 extends through the opening 2 in the cylinder and in order to provide means whereby the stufling box 5 will be retained in proper alignment with the rod 4 the stufling box 5 is provided with a certain amount of clearance with respect to the walls of the cavity 3 so that this wear may be readily taken care of. It will be noted that through the vibration of the rod 4, the flange 9 w1ll move laterally between the end of the cylinder 1 and the inwardly projecting portion Lsaavaa of the collar 11 and in order to provide for the proper lubrication of the flange 9, pressure lubricating means in the shape of a cup 2l is provided having a stem 22 communicating with the space between the collar 11 and the flange 9.
In the drawing, I have illustrated the inwardly projecting flange portion of the collar 11 as provided with an annular cavity in which a packing ring 23 is placed, the outer surface of this packing ring contacting with the outer face of the flange 9 whereby to prevent any leakage from the cylinder 1 at this point. While I have shown and described this packing ring 23, the same is not absolutely necessary and can be eliminated if desired.
Fromthe above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily appa-rent that I have provided an improved stuffing box of the floating type wherein all of.4 the parts thereof can be quickly and readily taken apart and reassembled in a very short space of time and wherein the packing generally indicated by the numeral 8 can be readily removed and replaced when desired. It will also be noted that the packing or stufling box 5 will be retained in alignment with the rod 4 at all times re ardless of the movement of the rod where y the proper amount of lubricant will be applied to the rod throughout all of its movements.
In order to prevent rotating movement of the case 5 with its assembled packing 8, flange 15 and glands 17 and 18 beyond a certain predetermined distance, suitable pins 16 are threaded through the flange 15 and project loosely into collar 11. The cavities in collar 11 into which pins 16 extend should be as much larger. than the pins 16 so as to have the same clearance as packing case 5 has in cavity 3.
I claim:
The combination with a supporting' element, of a acking box and rod, a collar adapted to iiold said packing box on the supporting element, a threaded flange carried at the free end of said box, and means carried by the threaded flange adapted to prevent rotating movement -of the packing box beyond a certain predetermined distance. v
