Description
l. A. ROSE. Railroad-Signals,
Patented July 7, l874.
WVITlVESSES. @%%@%zz; K W.
A ttO rneys UNITED STATES JAMES A. ROSE, OF PRAIRIE CITY, ILLINOIS.
PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAILROAD-SIGNALS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,870, dated July 7, 1874; application filed May 29, 1874.
panying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists not so much in any specific device, as in the combination and arrangement of certain levers and cranks with a bell and with a railroadtrack, for the purpose of giving an alarm at crossings, as will be set forth.
In the annexed drawing, which is a perspective view of my invention, AA represent the rails of a track. As the train passes backward and forward on this track, the wheels of the car strike one end of a crank-lever, (J, for the purpose of giving an alarm. This lever 0, it will be seen, bends and passes under a block, B, close by the side of the track, which confines it in place. One end of it lies close to the rail, so that the carwheel can easily strike it in passing, and to the other end is connected a spring, D, which stands in a vertical position, with its upper end resting in a loop in the upper end of a standard, J. E and G represent two levers, one pivoted to the standard J, and the other to a post, K, and both at their centers. F 1 represent two rods, which connect these levers together, holding or fastening into their extremities. A loop, d,
on lever E passes over the spring D, andconnects it with said lever. The upper end of lever G connects to an arm of a crank marked H, which is connected to the upper end of post K, as is clearly represented in the figure. The crank H bears a hell, I, which rings when suit= able motion is imparted to it.
When the car-Wheel strikes one end of crank C, said crank moves the spring D, which, in turn, oscillates the lever E by means of loop 01, and lever E, operating upon lever G through rods F, oscillates lever G, and this lever, act ing on crank H, partially rotates it and thus causes the bell to ring.
Thus an automatic signal is given at each crossing on the road.
The spring D answers the purpose of returning the lever or crank O to an upright position immediately, so that it will be in condition to be operated upon by the next passing train.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The crank 0, spring D, levers E G, rods F F, and crank H, bearing the bell I, in combination with the rail of arailroad-track, as and for the purpose herein specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of May, 1874.
JAM ES A. ROSE.
