CONTROL MECHANISM.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VINCENT LINK, a citizen of the United States of America. and resident of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain' new and useful Improvements in Control Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to levers and the like of the type provided with a latch for holding the lever in a fixed position.
One object of the present invention is to provide such a lever having a simplified and improved latch operating mechanism.
Another object is to provide such a lever in which the conventional pin for pivoting the latch operating handle to the bodyof the lever is dispensed with.
Another object is to provide such a lever in which the latch operating handle is provided with a projection adapted to be received in an opening in the body of the lever and about which the handle is adapted to ivot. 1
till another object is to provide a lever of the type mentioned in which a single resilient means is employed to hold the handle in place on the lever with the latch mechanism in operative position and which will efl'ectuallyprevent rattling of the latch mechanism carried by the handle.
The above being among the objects of the present invention, the same consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts to be hereinafter described, in reference to the accompanying drawing, and then claimed, having the above and other objects in view. In the accompanying drawing which illustrates a suitable embodiment of the present invention, and in which like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views; u

The brake lever consists of a main body portion 10 formed from sheet metal bent into a U shaped section as shown in Figure 3. The lower end is formed into a yoke 11 and is provided with a pin 12 for pivotally connecting it to the rod, 13, which in turn is connected to suitable lever operated mechanism not shown. A triangular pivot member 14 is inserted and secured between the U of the main body portion 10 in the position indicated in Figure 1, leaving one corner of the pivot member projecting outwardly to receive the pin 15 secured to the supporting member 16, the lever as a whole being pivotally supported by the pin 15. The upper end of\ the main body portion 10 constituting the handle 17 of the lever is formed into a split tubular section, as clearly shown in Figure 5, and a tubular sleeve 18 is pressed thereover as shown in Figures 1 and 5, a portion of the sleeve 18 being allowed to project a slight amount above the portion 17 to receive the finishing button 19 therein.
Secured to the support 16 is a ratchet sector 20, provided with ratchet teeth 21 on its inner surface disposed in a circumferential path about the center of the pin 15, and pivotally secured to the main body portion 10 of the lever at 22 is the pawl or latch 23 normally tending to engage the ratchet teeth 21 by means to be hereinafter described.
. Pivotally secured to the upper end of the lever is the latch operating handle 24, preferably formed of sheet metal into a U- shaped section. The'lower portion of the handle 24 is provided with two extending ears'25 in the form of a yoke which straddle the body portion 10 of the lever, as clearly shownin Figure 3, and project past the opposite side thereof as shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3. A portion of the metal at the lower end of the handle 25 is bent up to a position substantially perpendicular to the line of the handle 24 to form a projection 26 disposed between the ears 25. This projection 26 is adapted to be received in an opening 27 formed in the main body portion of the lever at the base of the U as shown in the drawings,'and the handle 24 is adapted to pivot about the line of contact between 'the projection 26 and body portion 10 at nected by the pin 29 to the ears 25 and extends downwardly and is pivotally connected to the latch 23 as shown in Figure 1. A spring 31 having a foot 32 seated within the U of the main bod portion 10 is looped around the pin 29 an has an extending arm 33 which is adapted to rest against the upper face of the projection 26; The end 33 of the spring 31, when free, or in other words when not engaging the projection 26, assumes a position as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2 as 33 When, therefore, the end 33 of the spring is sprung up over the projection 26 and engages its upper face it exerts a pressure thereon in the direction of the arrow 34, Figure 2, and causes the foot 32 to exert a pressure against the body portion 10 in the direction of the arrow 35. The reaction to the force indicated by the arrow 34 is, of course, equal and opposite thereto, and is exerted at the pin 29, as indicated by the arrow 36, tending to lift thesame and to rotate the handle 24 about the line of contact between the pro'ection 26 and body portion 10 at the edge 0 the opening 27. This lifts the rod 30 and causes the latch 23 to engage the ratchet teeth 21 on the sector 20, the length of the rod 30 limiting the upward travel of the pin 29 and consequently the amount of rotation of the handle 24. The reaction to the ressure indicated by the arrow 35 exerted by the foot 32 of the spring 31 against the body portion 10 is likewise equal and .opposite thereto and is exerted at the in 29 as indicated by the arrow 37, and tends to pull the lower end of the handle 24 into closer relationship with the body portion 10 of the lever. It is thus evident that the handle 24, rod 30 and latch 23 are normally under aspring pressure which effectually holds the parts in position, and prevents inadvertent movement and consequent rattling of the same.
It is further evident that when the latch handle 24 is drawn towards the lever handle 17 the latch handle 24 pivots about the line of contact between the projection 26 and body portion 10 at the edge of the opening 27 and causesthe pin 29 carried by the ears 26 to move downwardly, moving the rod 30'- downwardly and releasing the latch 23 from contact with the ratchet teeth 21, thereby allowing the lever'to pivot about the center of the pin 15. It is also evident that as soon as the etch operating handle 24 is released produced, but I do not limit myself to the specific construction shown and described, as formal chan es may be made in the same without departing from the spirit and substance of the .broad invention, the scope of which is commensurate with the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. In combination, a lever provided with an o ening therein, a handle provided with a yo e straddling said lever, and a projection seating in said opening for pivotally supporting said handle.
2.
