UNITED STATES GEORQE BEUFORD, 0F WELCH, WEST VIRGINIA.
TRACK.
Application filed January 22, 1923. Serial No. 614,248.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE BEUFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVelch, in the county of McDowell and State of West Virginia, have invented new and US81- ful Improvements in Tracks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a track, the general object of the invention being to provide means for connecting the ends of the rails together without the use of bolts and fish plates.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in. the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a plan view of a track constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view.
Figure 3 is aside view with parts in section.
Figure i is a bottom plan view of the abutting ends of two rails.
Figure 5 is a plan view of one end of one.
rail.
Figure 6 is a plan view of the adjacent end of another rail.
In these views 1 indicates the rails and 2 the ties of the track. In carrying out my invention I provide an extension 3 at one end of each rail, the bottom of the extension being flush with the bottom of the rail. The outer end of the extension is provided with an enlargement 4 which is of the same width as the base of the rail. The other end of the rail is formed with a groove 5 in its bottom and a notch 6 at the inner end of the groove which extends through the sides of the rail. This groove and notch are formed to receive the extension and its enlargement of the abutting rail so that the two rails will be locked together.
Members 9 are used for holding the rails to the ties, these members being fastened to the ties by the spikes 10.
From the above it will be seen that the rails are keyed together by the extensions and grooves and they are held against spreading movement by the wedge members on the ties.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages: and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
hat I claim is A rail joint of the class described comprising a flat T-shaped extension on the abutting end of one rail, said extension forming a continuation of the base of the rail and having its head of greater thickness than its stem and the adjacent end of the other rail having a groove in the bottom of its base for receiving the stem and a transversely extending notch in the bottom of its base for receiving the head, said notch being deeper than the groove and said notch and head being of the same length as the width of the bases of the rails.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature. hi
S GEORGE BEUFORD.
