Be it known that I, JAMES R. FOSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairmont, in the county of Marion and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrapers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to Scrapers, and more particularly to automatic Scrapers for use in coal mines.
An object of the invention is the provision of a device for use by coal loaders to clean the coal dust from under the cut, and thus permit them to obtain a: better grade of coal.
More specifically, the invention comprises a tool having a pair of hinged doors or scraping members that are adapted to open when the device is moved in one direction and automatically closed when moved in the opposite direction to scrape the dust away from the cut and leave a clean path equal to the width of the scraper.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown one embodiment of the invention. In this showing:

Figure et is a vertical sectional view on line 4--4 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a substantially semicircular brace or yoke which supports the tool. This brace 'is provided with a central flattened portion 2 having a semi-circular portion 3. The semi-circular portion 3 is adapted to cooperate with a clamping plate 4, having a similar semi-circular portion 5 to form a` Socket for the reception of a handle 6, shown in dotted lines in Figure 2 of the drawings. The clamping plate is held in position by suitable fastening elements 7. At the outer ends of the yoke, there is provided vertical plates 8 and these plates are connected by a lower cross member 9. A pair of rods 10 extend transversely from one of the vertical plates to the other, and these rods are adapted to loosely support scraping members or doors 11. As shown, the doors are provided with vertical portions and are extended angularly adjacent their upper ends, as at 12, the extreme upper endsbeing provided with sleeves 13 to receive the hinged rods.
The operation of the device will be apparent from the foregoing description. Then the tool is thrust forwardly away from the operator into a pile of dust or Similar material, the material forces the doors l1 rearwardly on their pivots to an open position and permits the dust or other material to pass through the open doors. lVhen the device is moved toward the operator, Similar to a raking operation, the doors are automatically closed and the dust or other material drawnv inwardly in a pile.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, .a relatively narrow frame including spaced vertically arranged side members, a rod eX- tending from one of said side members to the other, anda scraper pivotally connected adjacent its upper edge to said rod, the lower end of said Scraper being adapted to engage against a portion of said frame to limit the rearward movement of said scraper.
2. In a device of the character described, a yoke, a relatively narrow frame rigidly connected to the rear end of said yoke and including a pair of spaced Side members, a rod connected with said Side members, and a scraper pivotally connected adjacent its upper edge to Said rod, the lower edge of said scraper being adapted to engage against a portion of said frame to limit the rearward movement of said scraper.
3. In a device of the character described, a yoke, a substantially U-shaped vertically arranged frame rigidly connected to the rear end of said yoke and comprising side mem bers and av base member, a plurality oi" spacedrods connected between said side members substantially parallel to said base member, and a plurality of Scrapers each pivotally connected adjacent its upper edge to one of said rods, the lower edges of said Scrapers being adapted to engage against a portion of Said frame to limit the rearward movement of said Scrapers, said Scrapers having relatively flat vertical portions arranged in alinement with each other.
