Be -it known that I, W'ILLIAM `EZRA DoANE, a citizen of the United States, and
a resident of Griggsville, in the countyof Pike and .State of Illinois, have invented certain new' and useful Improvements in Railway Ties and Rail-Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
VThis invention relates to an improvement in metallic railway ties and fastening devices for securing the rails thereto.
The object of the inveiit-ion is to provide' al ufacture. v
Other objects and advantages of the iiivention reside in certain novel features of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more A fully described and particularly pointed out inthe appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part 'Y overhang and snugly engage the upper porof this specification, and in which:

Referring to the drawings wherein for the sake of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment ofthe invention, the numeral 10 designates one of the ties employed in conjunction with the present invention, and as shown it consists of an inverted channelshaped piece of metal such as steel or any other suitable material. The rails which are designated by 11 have their base section resting directlyl on the tops of the inverted channel shaped ties. each tie 10 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 12 which is enlarged adjacent one end, as at 13, to provide an opening somewhat larger than the slot and communieating therewith.

Each fasteningdevice also includes an ad justable two-part block, designated generally by 20. Each two-part block 20 comprises a fixed or stationary section 21 `and van adjustable or movable section 22. The adjustable or movable section 22 is provided with a rail engaging shoulder 23 adapted to tionY of the flange ofthe base of the rail and it also includes a retaining member 24 ofinverted T-shape in cross section. The section 21 includes a depending bar 26 adapted to snugly fit in the slot 12. One end of this bar is inclined or cut away as indicated at 27, and coacts with a similarly formed end 28 of the slot 12. 'Ihe opposite end of the bar from the inclined portion 27 is beveled, as at 29 so-that the sections may be readily assembled as will presently appear. As clearly shown in Figures 4 and 5 the section 22 is provided with a vertical groove :and section 2l is provided witha similarlydisposed tongue Si adapted to fit in the groove 3() in the assembly. The engaging faces of ther-sections 2lV and 22 are also provided with alined or registering slots, designated at 32 and 33, respectively. In order to assemble the section 21 of the tie, it being understood that the fixed block l5, the rail and the adjustable section 22 havebeen previously positioned, the inclined end 27 of the bar 26 of the iixed section is introduced into thev slot anj is engaged withV the inclined end wall 28 oi the slot, following which the section 21 is swung downwardly so as to bring the bar 2G into the slot l2 and to bring its tongue 3l into the groove 30. After the parts have been so adjusted and positioned the slots 32 and 33 arevalined and registered to provide a substantiallj.Y continuous key-way. In the keywayvprovided by the slots 32 and 33 a tapered key or wedge 35, preferably constructed'of wrought iron, is introduced and is driven to such an extent as may be necessary to firmly 'and securely fasten. thel rail to the tie. `tis to be understood that when the wedge is driven inte the siots 32 and 33 it will of course tend to move the sections 2l and 22 away from each other in the slot l2. The section 2l is however held against movement since it engages the end wall 28 of the slot. Thus it is that the section 22 has its rail engaging shoulder 23 urged into binding and clamping engagement with the rail and tends also to move the rail int-o binding engagement with the shoulder 16 of the fixed block. The wedges 35 are preferably constructedoif wrought iron er other metal having the requisite properties to enable it to be bent after the wedge has been'driven in the slot 32 and to the desired extent. By bending the ends of. the wedge after the same has been properly positioned it is secured in position and molds the parts against4 accidental displacement. At the same time the wedge may be readily bent back to its original form to permit of ready disassembling of the fastening' device and removal of the rail. The improved tie construction and fastening device is adapted to standard and narrow gauge roads and for industrial and mine tracls. A railffastener including a fixed block having rail engaging means, and a two party block including an adjustable sectionfand a fixed section, the adjustable ysection having rail engaging means and a wedge cooperable with the sectionsof thetwo part block for urging the adjustable-section'into engagement with the rail.
