Be it known that I, LAszLo MoLNAn or NAGYMAGYAR, citizen of Hungary, residing at Turin, Italy, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CaslrRegistering Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to cash registering machines of the class in which the amount to be recorded is set up by a mechanism independent of the other devices of the machine while by the actuation of an operating gear firstly indicating parts shifted during the previous operation are carried back to zero position, and thereafter said amount setting member is carried to zero position, this setting member driving at this time its associate indicating members.
According to the present invention the operation above referred to is obtained in connection with each mechanism unit of the machine, this machine comprising a mechanism unit for each figure of the maximum amount to be recorded, by means of a memher which is permanently in mesh with the cooperating indicating member and is made temporarily solid with the amount setting member, the operating members acting in succession in two opposite directions on said member.
On the annexed drawing are shown some constructions of a machine according to the present invention and Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a cash registering machine according to this invention with the mechanism unit for one figure in view;

The cash registering machine according to the present invention comprises a casing in which are arranged the several parts and has means for setting up the amount to be recorded, means for indicating this amount to the operator and to other parties, a counter and actuating means, the operator Serial No. 628,102.
first manipulating said setting means to set up the desired amount and then operating said actuating means which cause said indicating means to show said amount and the counter to record or totalize it.
The machine comprises as many units as are figures in the highest number to be recorded and each of these units has an operating member, a figure indicating drum and a counter drum.
Hereinafter is described the construction and operation of the machine according to Figures 1 and 2.
In said machine each unit comprises a manipulating lever 1 on which a toothed sector 3 is pivoted at 2, the said sector meshing at the suitable time with a pinion 4 of a drum 5 of a counting device, which may be of any desired or conventional construction. Said leyer 1 is loose on a spindle 6 on which is also loose another lever 7 which has rigidly secured thereon a toothed sector 8 permanently in mesh with a pinion 9 of a drum 10 of the indicating device, this drum having on its rim figures adapted to be seen through openings 36 and 37 of the machine casing, which figures indicate the position the operator has imparted to the lever 1.
The lever 7 has a pin 11 engaging with the toothed sector 3 when the latter meshes with the pinion 4. The lever 7 and the sector 8 are rigidly-connected to another toothed sector 12 permanently in mesh with a pinion 13 intended to operate other devices, as a printing device, not shown.
One double-armed lever 14-15 for each unit is loosely mounted on the spindle 6, the free end of the arm 14 of the said lever being provided with a lateral extension 16 intend ed to contact with the lever 1. Another lever 17 is also loosely mounted on the said spindle and is provided with a lateral extension 18 adapted to contact with an arm 19 rigidly connected to the sectors 8 and 12. One disc 20 is fast on said spindle 6 for each unit and for the last unit on the right-hand side there is a further disc 21 (see Figure 2). 1
A spindle 22 parallel to the spindle 6 carries an arm 23 on which a side cam 24 of the disc 21 is adapted to strike. One arm 25 for each unit is also mounted on the spindle 22, each of these arms being provided with an extension 26 meeting its cooperating lever 17 from below. The spindle 22 further carries loosely mounted parts each comprising two parallel tongues 27 and 28, the first mentioned being capable of engaging with a piece 29 secured to the disc of the corresponding mechanism, the other tongue 'being capable of contacting With the arm 15 of the double ari'ned lever 14-15.
V A further spindle parallel to 6 carries one loosely mounted arm 31 for each unit, the said arm having a knob 32 bearing on the rim of the disc 20, and an upturned free 7 end 33 bearing against the sector 3. The
discs 20 are peripherically provided with cam portions 34 cooperating with the knobs 32 of the arms 31. The cams 34of the 7 various discs 20 are in relative shifted angular position to one another so that they become operative in succession, the knobs 32 of the levers 31 being in line with each other, starting from the cam of the disc 20 belonging to the first unit on the right.
The spindle 6 is actuated by the operating handle 35 carried on one of its ends outside the machine casing.
The operation is as follows: The operator first places thevarions levers 1 each opposite the required figures which are shown on the casing along the slot through which ride the said levers; this operation causes no further movement in the machine because the sector 3 remains in the position illustrated and is out of engagement with the pinion 4 and with the pin 11. All other operations are performed on the spindle 6 being rotated by the operator by means of the crank handle 35 through one revolu tion, the discs 20 and 21 being thus ro-' tated. Then the said side cam 24 of the disc 21 comes into engagement with the arm 23 solid to the spindle 22 which is thereby oscillated and brings all the arms 25 with their extension 26 against the levers 17, the portionslSof which impinge against the arms 19 which 'were lowered in the courseof the previous operation of themachine. The sectors 8 and 12 together with the indicating device and printing mechanisms are consequently brought to their in itial. position in the course of this first stage.
The piece 29 of each disc 20 comes thereafter in engagement with the tongue 27 which by oscillating about the spindle 22 causes the tongue 28 to bear against the arm 15 so that the lateral extension 16 of the arm '14 acts 'upon the levers 1 from below and brings to their initial position those of them which have been lowered at the beginning of the operation.
Then the cam 34 of the disc 20 lifts the arm 31 just before the levers 1 start to move towards their initial position, so that the sector 3 is caused to engage the pinion 4 and the pin 11. Thus each lever 1 whilegoing back to its initial position rotates the drum 5 of the counter, the drum 10 of the indicating device (showing the figure set up through windows 36 and 37 and the pinion 13.
The levers 1 are thus carried to their initial position after the spindle 6 has been rotated one revolution whilst the parts of the mechanism comprising the sectors 8 and 12 remain in their shifted position;- said parts are then brought to their initial position at the beginning of the following operation, as hereinbefore described.
Figures 3 and 4 show a construction of cash registering machines similar to the above described one, in 'which transverse or universalbars are used in lieu of the parts 14-15 and 17.

Parallel to said spindle 6 is located a shaft 57 driven in rotation by the actuating crank handle 35 and which has at each end two pairs of cams5S-59 whose shape is shown in Figure 3, said cams being arranged in the respective position shown in this figure.
On cams 58 bear rollers 60 carried by levers 61 loose on the spindle 6 and which at their opposite end have solid therewith a bar 62 adapted to act on all the sectors 52. Said bar has a butt screw 63 in register with a cooperating piece 63 of each sector 52.
The cams 59 cooperate with rollers 64 carried by levers 65 loose on the spindle (3 and having at their opposed end a transverse bar 66 having buttscrews 67 intended to engage abutting pieces 67 of the cooperating sector levers 1.
At each end of the shaft 57 is also keyed a cam disc 68 on which bear rollers 69 of levers 70 loose on a spindle 71. I
The ends of the two levers 7O carry a rod 74 passingzthrough slots 75 of all the sectors 3 pivoted on the several sector levers 1.
The respective position of cams 5859 and the timing of the actuation of levers 6165 by these came as well as the shape of cams of discs 68 are such, as shown on the drawing, as on the shaft 5? being actuated by the operator the cams 58 are firstly caused to rock the lerers (El and move to lift the bar thereafter the cam discs 68 produce the oscillation oi the levers and finally the cams 59 rock the levers 65 and lift the transverse bar The position of the rod Tet and the shape of the slot are such as when the disc 68 is in normal position igure the displacement of the lever 1 does not produce the en agement oi the sector 8 with the pinion 4 nor the engagement of the pin with one of the recesses 50.
he operation of this construction is as i'ollows:-
The amount is tirstl set up by carrying the several levers 1 in register with the desired figures, these levers being engaged by stops 17 in the position imparted to them; with each lever 1 are shit .-:i its arms 483 but no other operation is produced in the machine, these arms being at this time disengaged from their respective cooperating parts.
The shaft 5. is then actuated through a complete revolution by its crank handle 35'. Then the cams 58 act on levers 61 and the bar 62 is moved thereby to raise all the sectors 5152 which were shifted by effect of the preceding operation of the machine, and carries them back to their initial posi tion. Thus are carried to zero position the indicating drums 10.
Then the cam discs 68 produce the oscillation 01 the levers 70 and bar 74 all the sectors 3 being thus carried into engagement with the respective counter pinion l, and the pins as of arms as are engaged with the recess 50 of sector 51 which is in register with them.
immediately thereafter the cams 59 actuate the rollers 6% and levers 65 and then the bar 66 is moved to engage by its butt screws 67 the contacting pieces 67 of the cooperating sector lever 1 all these sector levers which have been shifted during the amount setting operation being thus carried bac r to their initial position.
During this operation said sector levers 1 which have been set in register with a figure of the amount are oscillated back through an angle proportional with the numerical value of said figure and they drive through a similar extent the sectors 51 and 52 the drums 10 and the counter pinions 4.
(in the contrary those of said sector levers 1 which have not been shifted during the said amount setting operation and their cooperating parts are unali'ected notwithstanding the sectors 3" and 48 are carried in perat-ive position with respect to the pinion at and the sectors 5152, said sector levers 1 being engaged by the respect ve driving screws 6; ot the bar 66 when this latter is just reaching the end of its oscillation and therefore being not moved by it.
Figure 5 shows another construction in which the amount setting operation is carried out by depressing keys. In this construction 1 is a lever loose on the spindle {S and solid with a toothed sector 1. lVith this sector meshes a toothed rim mounted to move between guiding t'orks 123 and solid with a lever 86 which is fulcrumed at 8i and is acted on by a return spring 88. In front of the edge of this lever are the ends of stems 89 of a row of keys 89 said stems being mounted to reciprocate through a guide provided by holed partitions 9091 and having such a position with respect to lever 86 as to produce the oscillation of said lever 86 through an angle proportional with the value of the figure carried by the key oi the respective stem. Each stem 89 is held in its normal position by a spring 92 and Dril -S a tooth 98 which cooperates with a plate to engage the stem and key in depressed position against its spring 92, said plate 94 being arranged to slide along the supporting partition 91 and being actuated by a spring 95 which holds it in position to engage the tooth 93 of the key which has been depressed. A lever 96 fulcruined at 97 provides for shifting this plate to release the depressed key, say for the purpose of putting out of operative position a key having been depressed through an error.
On the spindle 6 is loosely mounted for each unit a member 98 provided with a sector 99 having an inner toothed rim 99 and an outer toothed rim 99, said outer rim 99 driving through gear 100 a pinion 9 of the drum 10 and with another pinion 13 intended to drive devices not shown, as a printing device or the like.
lVith said inner rim 99 of the sector W may engage a nose 101 of an arm 3 fulcrumed at 2" 0n the lever 1 and having a toothed rim 3 adapted to mesh with the counter pinion i. The pinions 4L and 100 are engaged by stop or positioning rollers l02103 carried by spring loaded levers 102103 for the purpose of resiliently holding them in correct position.
On the two ends of the spindle 6 are loosely mounted two plates 10% carrying a transverse bar 105 having a butt screw 105 in register with each sector 1. A roller 106 is pivoted at the upper edge of said plate 104.
On the ends of the spindle 6 are loose crank levers 10'? carrying on one end a transverse bar 108 having butt screws 108 while on their other end is pivoted a roller 109 which lies in the same plane as the roller 106. In the same plane as said rollers 10%") and 100, is further located a cam 110 which is solid with the shaft 57; this shaft is rotated in the direction of the arrow by the operator, as described in connection with other embodiments, and carries also a cam disc 111 engaging the projection 112 of an arm 113 pivoted at 11 1.
There are two arms 113 one in register with each of the said cam discs 111, and said arms carry a rod 115 extending throughout the machine under all arms 3; a further rod 116 lying above said arms 3 is fastened to the said arms 113.
On one side of one of the said discs 111 and in the path of a pin 122 projecting from this disc is located a projection 117 of a lever 118., loose on the spindle 6 and engaged by a slot and a pin 119 with a lever 120 which is fulcrumed at 97 and carries a bar 121 bearing'on the lugs 91 of all the locking plates 94. The operation is as follows :-The amount is set up by depressing the desired keys whose stems 89, bear on the lever 86 and oscillate it through an angle proportional with the value of the desired figure. Said oscillation is imparted to the lever 1 and to sector 3 as well as to the sector 1 which bears on the butt screw 105 of the rod 105 and shifts the plates 104 [and rollers 106 in the path of the cams 110.
On the shaft 57 being actuated by the operator each cam 110 acts firstly on its cooperating roller 109-and produces the oscillation of the lever 10? which moves the rod 108. This rod moves back all the parts 98 which were shifted during the previous operation and carries them in the position of' Figure 0; The cam timing is such ason the rod 108 reaching the end of its stroke, the cam of each cam disc 111 acts on the projections 112 and lifts the arm 113 so that the bar 115 lifts all the sectors 3 and moves the nose 101 of each of them into engagement with one of the recesses of the inner toothed rim 99 while the gear rim 3 meshes with thepinion 4.
As it is apparent, in this construction the engagement of the sector 3" with the oscillating meml er 98 is effected by a projection as 101 provided on the said sector at a large distance from its centre of oscillation the engagement being thus positively obtained whatever may be the position imparted to the sector by the shifting of the sector lever 1. V
The timing of the cams, as shown on the drawing, is such as when the sectors 3 are lifted by the action of the cams of the discs 111, the cams 110 act on the roller 106 and cause the plate 104 to move down, the rod 105 thus shifting back to zero position the sector lever 1 of all those the levers 1 which produces an oscillation of the/lever 118 which is imparted to lever 120. The rod 121 is thus moved down and acts on the lugs 91 of the plates 94 thus shifting them to release all the stems with their keys, which are thus free to take up again their initial position without preventing the return motion of the levers 1.
It is to be understood that the presentinvention is not confined to the constructions described and illustrated, this invention being only confined by the appendedclaims.
What I claim as my intention and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is 1. A cash register, including, a plurality of mechanical units, each unit comprising, a rocking member loose on aspindle, indicating members in permanent operative con nection with said rocking member, 7 an amount setting member concentric with said rocking member, an arm fulcrumed on one of said setting and rocking members, recesses and a cooperating projection on one of the last said members and on the said'fulcrumed arm, each of said recesses corresponding to a position into which said setting member may be carried, and actuating means which first shift said rocking member in one direction, then cause the fulcrumed arm to couple said rocking and setting memhere by the cooperation of said projection and recesses, and finally acton said setting member in a direction opposite to the said direction to shift all of said setting and rocking members.
2. A cash register, including a plurality of mechanical units, each unit comprising, a rocking member loose on a spindle, indicating members in permanentoperative connection with said rocking member, an amount setting member concentric with said rocking member, an arm fulcruined on one of said setting and rocking. members, recesses and a cooperating projection on one of the last said members and on the said fulcrumed arm, each of said recesses corresponding to a position into which said setting member may be carried, and actuating means comprising members for engaging saidrocking member and driving it in its motion, members for moving the said fulcrumed arm to bring said rocking and setting members in operative connection, and members for engaging said setting member and driving it in its motion in a direction opposite to the first said motion of said rocking member.
A cash register, including, a plurality of mechanical units, each unit comprising, a rocking member loose on a spindle, indicating members in permanent operative connection with said routing member, an amount setting member concentric with said rocking member, an arm fulcrumed on one of said setting and rocking members, recesses and a cooperating projection on one of the last said members and on said fulcrumed arm, each of said recesses corre sponding to a position into which said setting member may be carried, a member for engaging the edge of said rocking member, members for movin said fulcrumed arm, and members for engaging the edge of said setting member, andcam members acting in one direction on said arm and moving members, and in an opposite direction thereto on said actuating means, for rocking and setting members to shift, first said rocking members in one direction, then to cause said fulcrumed arm to couple said rocking and setting members, and finally to shift the setting member in a direction opposite to the above one, whereby to shift all of said setting and rocking members.
4 a cash register, including a plurality of mechanical units, each unit comprising, a rocking member loose on a spindle, indicating members in peananent operative connection with said rocking member, an amount setting member concentric with said rocl' member, an arm fulcrumed on said setting member and a projection on said arm, said rocking member having recesses engageable bv said projection, and actnating means for first shifting said rocking member in one direction, then causing said arm to engage its projection with one of said recesses, and finally acting on said setting member in a direction opposite to the above said direction whereby to shift all of said setting and rocking members which same are interconnected by the cooperation of said projection and recess.
5. A cash register, including, a plurality of mechanical units, each unit comprising, a rocking member loose on a spindle, indicating members in permanent operative connection with said rocking member, an
amount setting member concentric with said rocking member, an arm fulcrumed on one of said setting and rocking members, recesses and a cooperating projection on one of the last said members and on the said fulorumed arm, each of said recesses corresponding to a position into which said setting member can be carried, said fulcrumed arm having a toothed portion, a counter actnating pinion with Which said toothed portion, of the said fulcrumed arm meshes when said arm is in position to connect said setting and rocking members, and actuating means which first shift said rocking member in one direction then cause said fulcrunied arm to move into the position in which it connects said setting and rocking members and has its toothed portion in mesh with said conn er pinion, and finally act on the said setting member in a direc tion opposite to the first said direction whereby to shift all of said setting and rocking members.

A cash register, including, a plurality of mechanical units, each unit comprising, a rocking member loose on a spindle, indi' cating members in permanent operative connection with said rocking member, an amount scttim member concentric with said rocking member, an arm fulcrumed on said setting member and a projection. on said arm, said rocking member having recesses arranged to be engaged by said projection, said a in having a toothed portion, a counter actuating pinion with which said toothed portion arm meshes when its projection is engaged with one of said recesses of said rocking member, and actuating means, which, first s iift said rocking member in one direction, then cause said arm to engage its projection with one of said recesses, and finally act on said setting member in a direction opposite to the above said direction whereby to shift all of said setting and rocking members.
7. A cash register, including, a plurality of mechanical units, comprising, a rocking member loose on a spindle, indicating members in permanent connection with said rocking member, amount setting member concentric with said rocking member, an arm permanently connected with said setting member, a plurality of stems, a figure Key on each stem, each stem being arranged to shift said arm a distance proportionate to its figure, a member for interconnecting aid rocking member and setting member in different respective positions. and actuating means which first shift said rocking member in one direction, then put into operation said interconnecting member, and finally act on said setting member in a. direction opposite to the said direction whereby to shift all of said interconnected setting and rocking members.
8. A cash register, including, a plurality of mechanical units, each unit comprising, a rocking member loose on a shaft, indicating members in permanent operative connection with said rocking member, an amount setting member connected with said rocking member, a toothed sector solid with said setting member, a second toothed sector meshing with the first named sector and a lever solid with the second named sector, a plurality of stems, a figure key on each stem, each key being arranged to shift said lever through a distance proportionate to its figure, a member for interconnecting said rocking member and setting member in different respective positions, and actuatingmeans which first shift said rocking member in one direction, then put into operation. said interconnecting member, and finally act on the said setting member in a direction opposite to the above named direction whereby to shift all of said interconnected setting and rocking members.

A cash registering machine including a plurality of mechanism units each comprising a rocking member loose on a spindle, indicating members in permanent operative connection with said rocking member, an amount setting member concentric with said rocking member, an arm fulcrumed on said setting member and a projection on said arm, said rocking member having recesses adapted to be engaged by said projection and actuating means which first shift said rocking member in a direction, then cause said arm to engage its projection with one of said recesses and finally act on said setting member in a direction opposite to the above one to shift the whole of said setting and rocking members which are interconnected by the'cooperation of said projection and recess.

A cash registering machine comprising a plurality of mechanism units each comprising a rocking member loose on a shaft, indicating members in permanent operative connection with said rocking member, an amount setting member connected with said rocking member, a toothed sector solid with said setting member, a second toothed sector meshing with the first named one and a leversolid with said second named sector, a plurality of stems, a figure key on each stem, each key stem being adapted to shift said leverthrough an extent in proportion with the said figure, a member for interconnecting said rocking member and setting member in different respective positions and actuating means which firstly shift said rocking member in a direction, then put in operation said interconnecting member and finally act on the said setting member in a direction opposite to the above named one to shift the whole of said interconnected setting and rocking members. i
