UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN VEASY COLLIER, OF NORTHAMPTON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THE NORTHAMPTON MACHINERY CO. LIMITED, OF NORTHAMPTON, ENGLAND,
A CORPORATION OF GREAT BRITAIN.
MACHINE ron nnnnronorne rnsonns.
Application filed July 16, 1924. Serial No. 726,346.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN VEASY COLLIER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Northampton, in the county of Northampton, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Belating to Machines for Reenforcing Insoles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to machines for reenforcing insoles by the application of a strip of canvas or other suitable material to the upturned lip thereof and comprises an improvement upon the machine described in our prior British specification No. 20801 The improvement constituting the present invention concerns the gripping presser members which press the reenforcing strip upon the sides of the upturned lip and upon the flat face of the insole adjacent said lip. The object of the invention is to obtain a greater downward pressure of the members, to more effectively force the covering strip into the corner formed by the lip and insole and to enable an insole to be reenforced by the above mentioned method in cases where the upstanding lip instead of standing upright at right-angles is inclined relatively to the adjacent face of the insole.
It will be understood that when the upstanding lip is inclined the angle on one side thereof is less than a right angle. It is an important feature of the present improve ment that the gripper presser members are arranged to operate in such a manner as to effectively press the reenforcing strip into the angular corner.
According to the invention the gripping presser members which as in the previous machine are carried upon a rocker frame actuated to impart the feed to the work and strip, and mounted and actuated independently of each other. The member which acts upon the outside of the lip operates downward while the member which acts upon the inside ofthe lip operates first with a lateral movement outwards and then with a downward movement. 1
The double movement of the last mentioned member results in the reenforcing strip being pressed against the inside of the lip and also into the corner and upon the adjacent face of the insole.
The gripping presser members are actuated by suitable intermediate means from driven eccentrics creams, and means are provided to enable the pressure imparted by said members to be regulated according to requlrements.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood reference will be hereinafter made to the accompanying drawing where1n:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in sec tion, and
Figure 2 is a front elevation of a convenient embodiment of the invention.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention the gripping presser member 1 for acting upon the outside of the lip a of the insole b is slidably mounted in or on the rocker frame 2 which latter swings on a pin or bolt 3 secured in the upper part of the machine frame I. The presser member 1 is controlled and normally held raised by a compression spring 5 located between an angle piece 6, fixed on the rocker frame 2, so that the upper end of the presser member 1 passes therethrough and a washer 7 on said upper end. By means of a rod or link 8 operated by an eccentric 9 or equivalent the presser member 1 is moved downwards for pressing the reenforcing strip 0 upon the outside of the lip a and face of the insole 7). For this purpose the eccentric rod or link 8 is connected to a sleeve 10 mounted on the presser member 1 and adapted to abut against shoulders 11 formed by a square part of said member, which slides in the rocker frame 2 and prevents rotation of the presser member. The eccentric 9 or equivalent is formed or keyed on a driving shaft 12 from which the rocker frame 2 receives its motion in the manner set forth in the specification hereinbefore referred to. Said eccentric or equivalent moves the presser member 1 to a definite position and in order to enable the active pressure of the member upon the work to be varied the table or block 13 upon which the insole rests is made adjustable relatively to the member in a suitable manner. Conveniently the table or block 13 is located in a recess 14 in the rocker frame and has a screw threaded extension which is received in a tapped hole 15 in said frame so that by screwing the extension into or out of the hole the position of the table-or block maybe varied as required. The table or block projects from the rockerframe 2 through an opening 16 in the bed 17 of the machine and remains rigid in said frame during the operation of the machine.
The other gripping presser member 18 which acts upon the inside of the lipa is slidably mounted and spring controlled in a head 19 pivotally attached to the rocker frame 2 by means of a'pin 2001 equivalent. Conveniently the presser member 18 is formed like a plunger at its upper end to slide through a bearing 'on the head 19 which bearing also houses a compression spring 21 tending to hold the presser 1118111- ber raised for which purpose the spring engages a collar 22 secured on the upper end of said member'by a pin 28. This pin engages with recesses or notches 2 1 in the head 19 so as to prevent rotation of the presser member. Also pivot-ally mounted on the rocker frame 2, (preferably on the pivot pin 20) is a rock lever fitted at one end with an adjustable screw 26 to bear upon the upper end of the pressenmember '18, said screw being looked after adjustment by a nut device 27. At t-he'otherend the rock lever 25 has suitable intermediate connections for operation from an eccentric 28 or equivalent on the aforesaid shaft 12, such connections conveniently comprising an eccentric rod or link 29 and aneye piece 30 or equivalent. The rear portion of the head 19 is preferably bifurcated to embrace the rock lever 25, and both of these parts are situated in a slot or opening 31 in *the- 'downw-ards on the rocker-frame foract- 111g upon the -ins1de-of the lip of the mrocker frame 2.
There is provided between the rock'lever and the pivoted head 19 a suitable lost motion connection, such as maybe formed by a pin 32 in the head and a slot 33 in the lever, by-which the latter moves the head upwards and which permits the rock lever to move downwards independently of the head for a purpose hereinafter set forth. in the normal position the presser member 18'is held with its lower operative end raised clear-of the insole b. The first operation of the eccentric 28 or equivalent is to move the rock lever 25 and head 19 so that these parts turn as one on the 'pivot20 and cause the presser member to swing towards the lip a to press the strips 0 against the side thereof. The downward movement of the head 19 is now arrested by the contact of a foot 34 thereon with the lower end of the aforesaid slot or opening 31in the rocker frame. Further movement-imparted to the rock lever by the eccentric 28 or equivalent causes the screw 26 in said lever to act upon theupper end of the presser member and thereby move the latter downwards in the member upon the recnforcingstrips and "flatface'of the insole. This downward motion of the presser member takes place against the action of the controlling spring 21.
Upon reverse action'of' the parts by the eccentric 28 or equivalentythe rock lever 25 allows the presser member 18 to rise in 'without departingfrom the scope of' the invention.
