IMPROVEMENT IN WHEELS FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 52,747, dated July 7, 1874; application filed June 30, 1873.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM K. HAZLETT, a resident ot' the city and county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Wheel Hubs, otwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawing and to Athe letters of reference thereon marked, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional view of a hub containing the improvement. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are views ot' various moditlcations ofthe invention.

The object of the present invention is to provide a ready, neat, and effectual means for oiling` carriage-axles, and consists chiefly in an oil-reservoir of peculiar construction, and arranged in the hub in a novel manner, substantially as is hereinafter described.
In the drawing, A, Fig. 1, represents a vehicle-wheel hub of ordinary construction; and B, the customary boxing; and C, an axle. l) represents an oil-cup. lt is preferably iliade in the form of a tube, and is provided with a thread both on its inner and on its outer sides. It is of any suitable diameter, and, in length, extends transversely through the hub from the outside thereof nearly to the boxing B. Underneath the cup D, and between it and the boxing B, is arranged an elastic Washer, E, preferably made of rubber. This washer, by preference, is ofthe shape shown in Fig. 3 viz., concave on` its under side-to correspond to the curvature of the boxing, and dat on the upper side. Its thickness is a little more than the space between the cup D and boxing C. There is a passage-way, F, in the boxing B, in line with the center ofthe cup D when the latter is in position. The cup is provided with a cover, H, which may he moditied in construction, as shown at H, I, 4and J, respectively, in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, for the pur pose of enabling it to be operated by the hand dircctl y, or by an ordinary screw-driver or Wrench. In attaching the cup D in place, it is screwed into the hub A. To operate the invention oil is poured into the cup D and the cover H put on. Under the motion of the wheel the oit-trickles down the passage-way F to the axle, and thence along' it. In this Way a vehicle wheel-axle can be oiled easily, it being necessary to rel move the cover of the cup only.
Having described my invention, what I claim as never therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
