Be it known that ,I, LESLIE S.-HnLL, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Brantford, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Threading Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention-relates to pipe -'threading machines, and particularly to the structure of the cutter head, objects of the invention being .to improve and simplify this structure to reduce the cost by using fewer and smaller dies or chasers,'and tomake these smaller size dies serve for cutting taper threads of any desired length.
\ Another object of the inventionis to provide the combination of a head and dies of such structure as to permit of the use of a single set'of dies over an unusuall Wide range within a head of the usual an prime tical size.
A further object is to provide dies or cutters which, while movable radially either during adjustment or in operation,

These and other objects are attained in the'embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

The blocks also are of sp'eciahconstruction, being each made up of toverlaid plates 14,- 14, secured together by screws 16, the outer plate (14) being shouldered at 17, to fit the corresponding overhang-of the guide slot-(Fig. 4e) and both being slotted at 18 to receive the chaser (Fig. 1), the slot in the outerplate 14 being deeper (Fig. 3) to provide a seat for the shank of the chaser and the inner plate forming an anchorage for the-chaser securing screw 13 and a supporting abutment engaging the shoulder at the back of the chaser.
The chaser blocks are adjusted radially by a rotatably adjustable member 19, hav- "readily removed.
The member 19 is a cam carrier show'n ring 25, surrounding the chaser and head construction and having an inwardly proecting flange 26 riding on the annular portion of the supporting head in back of the confining shoulder 27. This carrier ring forms a protective; cover pver the chaser blocks, but may have cut cuts 28, adjacent the outer ends of the chaser blocks to enable removal 0f the blocks.

This taper guide, as it is called, is preferably in the form of a sleeve adapted to be adjustably secured on a rigid supporting rod 39, by a clamp screw 40. A spring 41, engaged between the end of the taper guide and the rod-guiding bracket 420i the carriage, operates when the set screw 40 is loosened, to thrust over against an 'adjustable stop screw 43 on the carriage (Figz 2).

It will be clear that when the chasers have traversed the work for a distance equal to their own width, a gradual expandlng or radial outward movement thereof must be provided to continue the tapered thread sec-f tion thus begun.
During the preliminary part of the threading operation referred to the taper guide member 38 has been free to move to the left in Figure 2 with the moving cutter head, the clamping screw 40 being adjusted to permit the guide memberto slide along the fixed rod 39 for the purpose. In 'order to continue cutting a tapered section after the preliminary tapered section has. been formed, the clamping screw 40 is tightened to lock the guide member 38 to the fixed rod 39 so that continued movement of the cutter head causes the member 37 to move along the u 'per surface of the taper guide member 38. his movement of the stop member 37 along the inclined surface of the tapered guide permits a correspondingrotation of the stop ring 32 and .the cam ring 25 in a clockwise direction in Figure 1 to permit a gradual expansion or spreading of the chas ers 8 under the spreading pressure of the entering pipe to obtain the desired tapered thread section.

It will be seen that a tapered thread section indicated in dotted lines at 44 in Figure 3 of the drawings and having an angle or inclineequal to that of the tapered guide member. 38 will be thus produced. The use of the simple form of tapered guide member shown produces uniform and accurate results in that the guiding conical members can be formed with a high degree of accuracy and the guiding surface is faithfully followed in operation through the direct pressure of the work itselfn I claim: I i r 1. In a-pipe threading device, a thread cuttin member formed to cut a tapered threasection, means for moving the thread cutting member longitudinally of the work to form a tapered thread section equal in Width to the width of the thread cutting member, a tapered guide member mounted to move longitudinally of the work with the thread cutting member while saidtapered thread section is being formed, means for locking said tapered guide member against movement when said threaded section has been formed, and means whereby the movement of the thread cuttingmember is controlled by the tapered guide to continue the formation of the tapered thread section.
