J. l. MORRILL SEAT COVER Filed Aug. 26, 1922 Fiq Patented Feb. 17, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT JOHN I. MORRILL. OF MOBILE, ALABAMA. ASSIGNOR TO EVRKLEAN SEAT PAD 00., OF
ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF MISSOUR SEAT COVER.
Application filed August 26, 1922. Serial No. 584,473.
- the following is a specification.
This invention relates to seat covers.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved seat cover composed of straw matting and provided with a novel form of marginal binding.
Another object of the invention is to provide a seat cover composed of straw matting having the ends of the woof straws folded and secured in folded position to prevent the warp straws from raveling.
Other objects will appear from the following description. reference being made to the drawing in which Fig. 1 is a view of the invention in an embodiment comprising pivotally united seat and back members.
Fig. 2 is a reverse side view.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged View showing the arrangement of the ends of the woof straws and the marginal binding.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1-.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Although I have shown my invention in an embodiment in which a seat member and a back member are pivotally united and herein claim my invention in such an embodiment including the novel and eflicient form of pivotal connection shown. I also claim the improved marginal binding whether the same is employed in connection with pivotally united seat and back members or not.
The marginal binding is best shown in Figs. 3 and 4 in which the ends of the woof straws 1 have extended portions 2 that are folded or bent to prevent the warp straws 3 from raveling or being drawn off of the woof straws. The extended ends 2 of the woof straws 1 may be bent laterallv in either directionand, if desired. secured in such position by a marginal binding 4 of cloth or other appropriate material. folded to enclose the side edges of the section of .matting, where the folded ends 2 of the woof straws are provided. The stitching 5 preferably runs zigzag as shown so as to extend across and bind the edges of the binding.
A somewhat wider strip 6 of marginal binding is folded to enclose the edges of the section of matting between the folds thereof, also enclosing the binding'4 in case such binding 4 is used. as it may be omitted in some instances. The binding 6 may be and preferably is composed of a tape or ribbon of cloth having selvedge edges, so that it will not ravel and will form a seat cover of neat and finished appearance. Zigzag stitching 7 extends across the edges of the binding 6 securing the binding on the matting. The seat cover thus constructed is quite durable and the binding will not work loose or become detached.
Wherever desired a back member may be provided and pivotally connected with the seating member so that one will fold flat upon the other and keep the seating surfaces clean. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the two members have their adjacent edges spaced apart and pivotally connected by an insert 8 of cloth or the like having its edges provided with folded portions 9 enclosing the edges of the matting and secured to the matting by stitching 10. The binding 6 extends along and is secured to the side edges of both members of the device extending across and pivotally uniting said members at their edges. The ends of the insert 8 are secured between the folds of the binding 6 by the zigzag stitching 7.
In both members the woof straws 1 preferably run transversely so that when the back member is raised the warp straws 3 thereof extend upwardly. In this way the back member is prevdfited from folding or crumpling-upon itself. while both members aresufliciently flexible to bend and conform to the contour of the seat or support upon which they are placed.
I do not restrict myself unessentially. but what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is t- I 1. A seat cover composed of straw matting having the ends of the woof straws folded against the warp straws. a flexible nonmetallic binding enclosing the edges of the matting and pressing the folded ends of the woof straws against the warp straws, and means securing the inner edges of the binding to the matting. Y
2. A seat cover comprising separate back and seat members composed of straw matting having woof straws running trans- Yersely and parallel with the adjacent edges of said members and the ends of the woof straws folded against the warp straws at the side edges of said members, a relatively wide flexible hinge secured to the adjacent edges of said members, and a binding enclosing the edges of said members and the ends of said hinge and holding the woof straws folded as stated and forming with said hinge a pivotal connection between said members" 3. A- seat cover comprising separate back and seat members composed of straw matting having woof straws running transversely and parallel with the adjacent edges of said members and the ends of the woof straws folded against the warp straws at the side edges of said members, a relatively wide flexible hinge secured to the adjacent edges of said members, a binding enclosing the edges of said members and having its inner edges attached to said members, and an additional binding wider than said first binding enclosing the edges of said members and also enclosing said first binding and having its inner edges attached to said members inwardly from said first binding.
