BED ATTACHMENT FOR. VEHICLES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SEBoLr J. SENIOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wymore, in the county of Gage and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed Attachments for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a folding bed, and more particularly to such a bed adapted to be carried in its folded condition upon the running board of an automobile.

The invention has for its object the provision of a bed attachment for automobiles which can be folded or collapsed with a mattress therein and carried upon the running board of the vehicle. Another object of the invention is the improvement of the details of such a bed attachment. A still further object of the invention is the provision of a novel construction of hinged connection between the running board and the bedframe, whereby the bed may be easily removed from its connection with the vehicle but securely supported and looked upon the vehicle in its collapsed or folded con dition. Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear in the following description and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims. 1

It will be appreciated that the invention may be embodied in several forms, only one of which has been shown upon the drawing and described in this specification, and that the form so shown and described must therefore be considered as indicative only.

The invention consists of a sectional frame comprising structural angles in which is mounted a typical form of bed spring, a mattress adapted to be spread in a peculiar manner upon the bed spring and folded within the collapsed framework, and a novel mounting for the framework upon the run ning board of an automobile. These features will be now described in detail and their individual functions pointed out, after which a rsum of their conjoint use Will be given.

The framework 10 of my bed attachment is made in two sections 11 and 12 hingedly connected together at 13. The bed spring 14 of typical form is mounted within the two sections and each section is made of

Depending from the end member 16 are pivoted legs 17, 17' of short angle iron or wood, which are adapted to be folded, as shown indotted lines in Figure 4 within the angle of the end piece 16. Hinged to the

20, 20 at its ends. The boards 18, are notched at 21 for the purpose of receiving the hooks 20 and holding said hooks against sliding movement upon the edges of the boards. There is an additional function for said cross bar 19 as will hereinafter appear.

Referring to Figure 5 it will be seen that the framework is provided centrally with a support 22 which comprises a cross bar having ateach end a leg 23, an car 24: and a brace 25, the brace member being attached at one end 26, to the cross bar and having its other end bent and apertured. The car 24: is apertured in alignment with the aperture of the brace and the hinged bolt 27 passes through both said members as well as through the side members 15', 15' of the bed framework. To insure the position of portions 3? terminating in lips 00 which lie set-up bed I 28 connect- 23 with the slightly above and in parallellisni with the strip, 30. The hinge portions 31 and the strip 30 areiattaehed to the running board by the bolt 3%, and it will be noticed thatthe strip projects slightly beyond the said running board, providing a ledge upon which the angle member 16, will rest when the bed is being carried in its collapsed position by :the automobile.

As shownin Figure 7, when. the bed is set up, all that is necessary to remove it from the automobile is to lift the angle member :16" from its position in the hooks 31 and. likewise'it is only necessary in attaching the bed to the automobile to insert the angle 16 into the ,hooksSl. But when the bed is collapsed or folded, the angle member 16 will occupy the position shown in. Figure 8 and in fulllines in Figure 7, when it will rest upon the ledge with its back against the edge of the running board-and the end of one leg of the angle within the book 31 under-the 'lip 33. In this position of the parts, it will be appreciated that the bed will be securely held to the running board without any danger of its removal by jar ,or shock.

As shown in Figure 1, when the bed is in set-up position, the n'iattress extends from the end member 16 to and across the running board of the automobile, and it will also be seen that the upper face of the running board is in a plane with the upper face of the bed framework, whereby the running board is utilized as a part of the bed upon which the pillow may be placed. 'VVhen it is desired to :fold or collapse the 'bed, that portion 36 of the mattress which is on the runningboard is folded over into the dotted line position indicated by the numeral 36 in Figure '3. The side boards 18 are swung into their full line position of Figure 6, the cross l ar put into place with the hooks resting in the notches 21 and the portion 37 of the mattress folded over the said cross bar 19 and between the boards of unfolding and refolding of the bed attachment, reference is made to Figure 8 wherein the frame is shown as folded in position upon the running board, being held there by strap 38 extending from any suitable position, as for instance the underface of the strip 30 to a book 39 attached to the body 10 of the automobile. The strap or band 38 may be made of elastic material if so desired.

Upon the removal of the strap 38, the

28 and 28 have assumed a vertical position in respect to the bedframe and that when the bar 16 is finally lowered the legs 17 and 2 3 are in proper position to support the bed frame centrally and at one end. The other end of the frame is supported by the hinged members 31.

From the foregoingidescription, the operationof my invention will be apparent. It will only be necessary therefore to give a rsum of the conjoint use of the several parts, for a complete understanding of the invention.

The bedframe made of hinged sectional members is easily applied to the running' board of an automobile when it is desired to carry it upon a trip, byinsertingthe an gle member 16 into the hinged members 31. In storing the bed, the boards 18 are in the position shown in the dotted lines in Figure 2, but when the bed is in use these are dropped, as shown in the full line position in said figure andthe cross bar 19 has been removed.

Upon lifting the boards 18 and connecting them by the cross bar 19, folding the mattress end 36 over into its dotted line position 36 (Figure 2) and upon folding the mattress end 37 over the cross bar into its position 37, the bed may be collapsed by a reversal of the movement described in connection with the showing of Figure 8, with the leg 17 folded within the angle of the member 16 and with the support -22 lying between the two sections of the angle framework, as shown in full lines in Figure 8.

The .strap38 may be provided'at its lower endwith a hook which will .take into a suitable aperture in the angle member 16. At the upper end it may be provided with a buckle. In Figure -8 the strap is shown as applied and in position to hold the bed in place upon the running board of the vehicle.

It will be appreciated thatby lny invention there is provided an easily attached bed for use in connection with touring in an automobile, and that I have provided a light structure of bed framework occupying a minimum of space.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a vehicle bed attachment, a bed frame comprising a pair of hingedly connected sections foldable upon a lifting of the hinge connection, and means for holding a mattress upon said bed folded frame comprising side boards attached to one seetion,and a detachablebar connecting said side boards over which the mattress is folded.

2. In a vehicle bed attachment, a bed frame comprising a pair of hingedly connected sections foldable against each other upon a lifting of the hinge connections, one end of said frame hinged to the running board of a vehicle, a mattress adapted to lie upon the frame and running board, side boards hinged to one section of the frame, a cross bar above the mattress for holding said side boards in elevated position, the running board end of said mattress being foldable back upon the mattress body, and the opposite end of the mattress being foldable over said cross bar upon said mattress body, whereby said mattress may be carried in the folded bed frame in the travel of the vehicle.

3. In a vehicle bed attachment, the combination of a vehicle running board, a bed frame comprising an angle end bar, a hinge member projecting from the underface of said running board, and comprising an upwardly turned hook adapted to receive said angle end bar, and a strip in said hook projecting beyond the running board and forming a ledge for supporting said angle bar against the edge of the running board.

4. In a vehicle bed attachment, a bed frame comprising an angle end bar, hinge hooks and strips attached to the under surface of the vehicle running board, said hooks providing a lip with which the angle bar is adapted to engage, and said strip providing a supporting ledge the outer edge of the running board provides a support for the back of said angle.
