TYPEWRI'IER FOR MUSIU NOTES.
Application filed September 25, 1922. Serial No. 590,267.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Ponrmro M. DIAZ and Bosnnoo M. DiAz, citizens of the Republic of Mexico, respectively, residing at- Monterey, respectively, State of Nuevo Leon, and Republic of Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriters for Music Notes, of which the following is a dpecification.
This invention relates generally to type-- writing machines, having more particular reference to a machine of this sort adapted for uniting music scores.
The invention has for an object the provision of a simple arrangement whereby an ordinary typewriter mayxbe adapted for. writing music.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawings is a plan view of a typewriter having the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring now to the drawings, the reference numeral indicates the frame of the machine, 11 the type-bars, 12 the keybars, and 13 the platen roll, these parts being of ordinary construction. The keys are indicated at 14 and differ from ordinary typewriter keys only in having thereon indications of, the different marks used in writing music, as shown, it being understood that the type carried by the bars 11 is correspondingly formed.
As is understood, a line of music has characters spaced vertically aswell as horizontally, a series of horizontal lines extending across the sheet to indicate the vertical positioning of the characters. These horizontal lines are marked in individual sections across the sheet by suitably formed type elements the control key whereof is indicated specifically at 14', means being provided for reflecting a ready vertical shifting of the sheet to bring it into proper re ation to this type element.
As here shown, the platen shaft 15 has mounted thereon, adjacent one end thereof, a bevel gear segment 16 which meshes with a bevel pinion 17 fixed on one end of a longitudinal shaft 18 on whose other end is a spiral gear 19 meshing with a like gear 20 on the lower end of a vertical spindle 21 which is journaled in a bearing member 22 secured as by screws 23 on an extension 13 from the platen carriage 13. Formed integral with the bearing member 22 is a horizontal semi-circular shaft 24 on which is mounted a plate 25 having scale marks 26 along .its edge.
Fixed to the spindle 21 is an arm 30 which extends over the scale-plate 2g") and is provided with a pointer 31 adapted to register with the scale 26. Vertically slidable in the end of this arm 30 is a pin 32 having an ofi'set finger 331011 its lower end adapted to engage in notches 34 formed on the underside of the shelf 24 to hold the arm 30 in set position. The pin 32 is normally pressed upward, to hold the finger 33 engaged in the proper notch, by a coiled expansion spring 35 located in a recess in .the end of arm 30 and hearing between the bottom of said recess and a head 37 on pin 32. The pin 32 is prevented from' turning relatively to the arm 30 while the latter is being shifted, by a stud 38 which projects therefrom into a slot 39 in the end of arm 30.
The gear segment 16 is loose on the platen shaft 15 and has formed integral therewith a forwardly projecting arm 43 having mounted on its end a double armed pawl 44 adapted to engage a ratchet wheel 45 fixed to a shaft 15. Fixed to the" pivot pin 44 on which the pawl 44 is fixed and projecting inwardly therefrom toward shaft 15 is a finger 47 which terminates in an arcuate member 48 curved concentricto shaft 15 and having an inclined notch 49 formed in the centre thereof. Into the crotch of this notch projects a pin 50 fixed in the carriage extension 13, the various parts being so constructed that when the pointer 31 registers with the central point of scale 26, the pawl 44 is completely disengaged from the ratchet wheel 45.
In using our improved music writing machine the pin 32 is pressed downwardly to free the arm 30, which is then swung to one side or the other. Swinging of arm- 30 will rock segment 16, moving arm 43, and
since the pin 50 holds the inner end of the finger d7 against movement the pawl 44 will be rocked at the first movement of said parts, and will engage and move the ratchet wheel 45, causing the platen 14 to be rotated and shifting the paper.- The parts are so proportioned that the pin 50 is disengaged from the notch 49 when the pawl 44 engages the ratchet wheel 45, while the scale 26 is so numbered as to enable the user to readily set the sheet at the right position by adjusting the arm 30 to a desired point. lhe key 14 is then struck marking the horizontal lines on the paper, after which other selected keys are struck to print the notes, the machine having the usual back spacer key 1-l to move the platen back after a note is struck. A spring 55 may be coiled around the spindle 21 and act'to'return the arm 30 to central position on the scale 26.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows 1. In a machine of the class described, a platen roll, a shaft on which said roll is mounted, a gear segment loose on said shaft, an arm fixed to said gear segment, a ratchet wheel fixed to said shaft, a double ended pawl mounted on said arm, a fixed pin adapted to engage said pawl to move either end thereof into engagement with said ratchet wheel upon rotation of said gear scgn'ient, and means for rotating said gear segment,

In a machine of the class described, a platen roll, a shaft on which said roll is mounted, a gear segment loose on said shaft, an arm fired to said gear segment, a ratchet wheel fixed to said shaft, a double ended neaaeeo pawl mounted on said arm, a fixed pin adapted to engage said pawl to move either end thereof into engagement with said ratchet wheel upon rotation of said gear segment, and means for rotating said gear segment, said means including an arm operating in conjunction with a scale.
3. In a machine of the class described, a platen roll, a shaft on which said roll is mounted, a gear segment loose on said shaft, an arm fixed to said gear segment, a ratchet wheel fixed to said shaft, a double ended pawl mounted on said arm, a fixed pin adapted to engage said pawl to move either end thereof into engagement with said ratchet wheel upon rotation of said gear segment, and means for rotating said gear segment, said means including an arm operating in conjunction with a scale, and means for locking said arm in adjusted positions.
4. In a machine of the class described, a platen roll, a shaft on which said roll is mounted, a gear segment, a ratchet wheel fixed to said shaft, a double ended pawl mounted on said arm, a fixed pin adapted to engage said pawl to move either end thereof into engagement with said ratchet wheel upon rotation of said gear segment, and means for rotating said gear segment, said means including an arm operating in conjunction with ,a scale, and means for locking said arm in adjusted positions, and a spring acting to return said arm to a certain fixed position with respect to said scale.
