ELECTRIC HEATER.
Application med November 1, 1922. Serial No. 598,401.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL RAUcHr'Uss, a residing at the city of Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Heaters, a specification.
.This invention relates to electric heaters,
- more particularly to heaters in which the liquid itself forms the heating resistance, such, for example, as used in steam boilers, and has for its object the provision of means whereby such heaters may be regulated in a simple, reliable and eflicient manner.
The regulation of the consumption of energy in steam boilers heated electrically on other, or by adjusting insulating tubes, or
by several of thesel methods of adjustment in common.
More specifically the present vinvention relates to the regulation of the consumption of energy in steam boilers electrically heated on the electrode principle, having stationary electrodes and adjustable insulating tubes. In one form of my invention the insulating tubes, which are adapted to be adjusted in the direction of their longitudinal axis, are inserted at their upper ends in stationary insulating tubes which gradually become narrower and which are arranged above the said upper ends. By means of this arrangement the resistance of the passage for the liquid may be very gradually increased by lifting the lower insulating tubes, an extremely fine regulation of the consumption of energy thus being obtained. The movable insulating tubes may be to advantage arranged on a common cross-piece and this may be lifted and lowered from below from a regulating rod, for example by means of worms and gear wheels.
The drawm shows one illustrative embodiment of the invention in longitudinal section;
f Referring to the drawing, a indicates the velectrodes :located in the boiler b. They are A 'carried on the inner end of currentsupply of which the following isl bars or rods o which project outside the boiler b through suitable insulators 1. The electrodes are stationary, being ositioned so that they are submerged to t e desired extent in the liquid in the boiler. The electrodes are in a well known `manner surrounded by insulating members or tubes d,
the upper ends of which may be inserted in insulating members or tubes e of conical form which broaden gradually in a downward direction. These insulating tubes e are arranged in a stationary manner on a suitable holder f, whilethe insulating tubes d rest on a common cross piece g and may be lifted and lowered with the latter from the regulatin -rod Z. By reason of the annular space tween the insulatingl tubes d and e, which space, in consequence of the conical shape of the insulating tube e narrows radually as the insulating tubes d rise, t e resistance of the li uid path becomes greater gradually and accordingly regulates very gradually the consumption of ener y.
at I claim as new and'desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. An electric heater for liquids comprising a plurality of electrodes immersed in the liquid to be heated, cooperating insulating members surrounding one of said electrodes, said insulating members telescoping one within the other, and means for adjusting said members axially with relation to each other so as to vary the liquid path between said electrodes.
2. An electric heater for liquids comprising a pluralit of electrodes immersed in the liquid to heated, a air of tubular insulating members surroun ing each of said electrodes, one of the members in each pair being conical, and means for ad'usting the members in each pair with relation to each other so as to vary the liquid path between said electrodes.
3. An electric heater for liquids comprising a pluralit of electrodes immersed in the liquid to e heated, stationary conical tubular insulating members surrounding said electrodes, movable insulating tubes surrounding said electrodes and cooperating with said stationar insulatin members, and means for adjusting sai insulating 4tubes so as to vary the liquid path between said electrodes.
4. An electric heater for liquids comprising a pluralit of electrodes immersed in said support so as to adjust said insulating the liquid to e heated, stationary conical tubes along their longitudinal axes Withretubular insulating members surrounding lation to said conical members and vary the 10 said electrodes, movable insulating tubes liquid path between said electrodes.
5 surrounding said electrodes and inserted in In Witness whereof I have hereunto set said conical members, a common support for my hand this 9th da of October, 1922. said insulating tubes,4 and means for moving P UL RAUCHFUSS.
