C. H. BOWERS sxmf BOARD TONGUE CUTTER Filed Oct. 8, 1924 VII/WW remedial). 11, 1925.
PATENT OFFICE.
cLIrroRn niownns, or sauces, MAssAcHusETTs.
'sxiBT-BonRn-ToNeUn CUTTER.
j'Application filed October 8, 1924. Serial No. 742,361.
' To all whom it may concern: 4
I Be it known that I, CLIFFORD H. Bownns,a citizen of the-UnitedStates, and a resident of Sau u's, in the county of Essex lowing is a specification.
and State of assachusetts, have invented new and useful" Improvement in- Skirt- Board-Tongue Cutters, of which the fol- -Myl-inve'ntion relates to cuttlng tools and more especially to a tool adapted for'cutting tongues in the vertical edges of skirt-' boards. Heretofore'skirt-boards have been tongued by mallet and chisel, and the oper- 1 ation' on the skirt-boardpf the usual stair way requires about an hour.
The object of my invention is to provide a tool whereb a skirt-board or other wooden member may e tongued accurately and rapbe tongued in about one-tenth the time reu ireld to do the work with a mallet and c 1se An illustrative embodiment of my invention which has given good results in practice, is shown in the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification ,in whichr a Figure 1 is a side View of a skirt-board tongue-cutter involving my invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is, a central longitudinal section;
Fig. 4 is a section of a skirt-board taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 6; i
Fig. 5 is a section of a portion of a riser with the skirt-board in co-operative relation therewith; I
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary plan view of a skirt-board;
Fig. 7 is a front elevation of the tonguecutter shown in Fig. 1.
In the particular drawings selected for more fully disclosing my invention and which are to be considered as illustrative and not restrictive, 10 is a handle of malleable iron or any suitable material carrying at'its forward-end a cutting ,blade 11, the
forwardly tapering end 12 of the handle permitting -said blade to slope downwardly.
While various means may be employed for "securing theblade to the hand1e,I prefer,
as shown in the present'ins'tance, to clamp the same thereto by means of the nut 13 threaded to the stud 14.- which projects from the center of the disc-shaped guide 15, and 1s threaded to the forward portion 12 of the handle as shown 'in' Fig. 3. A beveled washer. 16 may be interposed between the blade and the nut 13. l
The. -cutting blade has acentral straight portion 17 parallel to the face of the gauge 15 and terminating in a side portion 18 curved upwardly with respect to said gauge. Preferably the cutter is made double for right and left skirt-boards, and for this purpose the straight portion 17 of the blade is provided with two upwardly curved side portions 18.
The stud 14 is provided with a thread of tine pitch, for instance twenty threads to the inch, and the depth of the cut will of course be governed b the distance between the cutting blade an the upper face of the disc, which distance may be varied by turning the gauge, a handle 19 preferably being provided for this purpose.
A fine adjustment may be obtained by means of the screw 20 passing through, but not threaded to, the cutting blade and in threaded engagement with the handle, the end of said screwbearing against the upper face of the gauge and preferably taking into ter, sets the gauge for a cut of the proper depth and holds the cutter against the corner formed by a vertical and a horizontal edge of the skirt-board, the side of the portion 12 of the handle serving as a gauge in .one direction, and the disc 15 as a gauge in the other, and then pushes the tool across the edge of the board, whereupon a tongue of the shape indicated at 22 in Figs. 4 and 5 will be produced in the vertical ed e of the skirt-board 23, the flat portion 1 of said tongue being cut by the central straight portion 17 of the blade, and the curved porwith a groove'25 into which the tongue of the skirt-board is inserted.
Having thus described an illustrative embodiment of my invention without however limiting the same thereto, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A skirt-board tongue-cutter comprising in combination a handle, a gauge located be; low the forward end of said handle, a stud projecting'from the (-enterof said'gauge, a cutting blade arranged on the forward end of said handle, said stud being in threaded engagement with said handle, and passing through a bore in said blade, and a nut threaded to the projecting end of said stud and clamping said blade to said handle.
2. A skirt-board tongue-cutter comprising in combination a handle, a cutting blade arranged on the forward end of said handle a gauge located-below the forward end 0 said handle, a stud projecting from the center of said gauge and passing through said handle and blade, and means where y the Elana of the upper face ofsaid gauge may e varied with respect to said blade.
3. A skirt-board tongue-cutter comprising in combination a handle, an adjustable gauge secured to the forward end of said handle, a cutting blade arranged on the forward end of said handle, means whereby the plane of the upper face of said gauge may be varied with respect to said blade and a screw passing through said bladeand being in threaded engagement with said handle, theend of said screw taking into a depression in the face of said gauge.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 4th dayof October,
- CLIFFORD H. BOWERS.
