Be it known that. we, GEORGE S. HILL and AUGUs'rUs C. SAXTON, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cookand State of llllinois, have invented new and useful improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
'l he present invention relates to locks and more particularly such as are designed for use in connection with the steering column of an automobile. Among the objects ot thisinvention are: to so simplify the construction of a lock of this character as to make it more easy to assemble; to so improve the construction of such a lock that the same will be strengthened; to so construct a lock of the character stated that the parts cannot readily get out of place and therefore cease to function properly; to provide means, inaccessible from the exterior of the lock, for holding the lock cylinder in place in the structure and such further objects, advantages and capabilities as will later i more fully appear.

Referring more in detail to the drawing, numeral 1 indicates the casing in which are housed the lock parts, 2 the spring pressed locking plunger, held in extended position Y by the spring 3 engaging its outer end, and
4 `the lock cylin er extending inwardly through a lateral face of the body 1 to engage a tlange) 5 formed at the rear end of l lt 2 by cutting away a portion of the' b y thereof to form a notch 6 in which the operating finger 7 of the c linder cam 8 may work; The head 9 of the ocking bolt 2 is cut away as at 10 to slide over the upper tace of the latch member 11 as shown in Fig, 3. This latch member 11 is carried adjacent .the lower end ot a bolt 12 which is biased outwardly bya s ring 13 surrounding the bolt, and enclose between the inner tace of the bolt head 14 and the bottom of a cavity in the body member 1. The lower end 15 of the bolt 12 is reduced and slides in a hole in the body member 1 to assist in holding and guiding the bolt 12 in its motions of reciprocation. The latch 11 is provided with a notch 16 adapted to engage in the notch 10 in the edge of the flange 9 when the bolt 2 is withdrawn rom locking position and the spring 13 causes latch member 11 to be raised. lt is obvious that when a key' is inserted in the lock cylinder and rotated it will cause the withdrawing of the locking bolt to such a point that latch 11 may be raised by spring 13 until flange S) engages in notch 16. ln this position of the parts the lock cylinder may be rotated to normal position and the key withdrawn.r
When it is desired to lock the steering post so that the machine may not be steered 1t is only necessary to press down on bolt head 14; until plun er or bolt 2 is released and then rotate t e steering wheel suciently to permit the plunger 2 to enteran aperture provided therefor as shown at 17 Fig. 2.
It will be seen by reference to the drawin that the locking'plunger 2 is cut away ong at one side (to orm notch 6) instead of eing cut awa in two or more laces as has been heretotlbre done. The epth of notch 6 can be varied within certain limits and still leave the locking bolt strong enough to withstand any strains which may be put upon it when an attempt is made to destroy it.
An aperture is formed in the body inember 1 extending from the steering column aperture to the lock cylinder aperture and is tapped for a portion of its length to receive the screw 19,- which is inserted from the steering column aperture to en age and hold the lock cylinder 4 in place. T is screw 19 is not exposed at any int upon the external surface of the ov member 1 and therefore cannot be reached by an tool from the exterior of the lock so as to removed to release the lock cylinder.
A flanged sleeve 20 provided in one side with a' slot 21 surrounds the lookin bolt 2 and is fitted in the aperture in bodr member 1 through which the locking bolt slides.

Having 110W described our invention, We claim: l
1. ln a steering post lock, a body member `apertured for the reception of a slidable locking bolt and a lock cylinder, a sleeve in one of the apertures through which a locking bolt may pass a headed locking bolt slidable through said sleeve, means for actuating said bolt, the head of said locking bolt being notched for the reception ot a latch member, and a notched latch member adapted to rest in said notch in. the bolt head and to be forced upwardly when the bolt hea-dis withdrawn into registry with the notch .in the latch member, so that the latch will be in position to hold the locking bolt in retracted position, said lockingbolt being provided with means to prevent rotation thereof Within the sleeve.
2. ln a steering post lock, a body member apertured longitudinally and transversely laeaaaa for the reception of a locking bolt and a lock cylinder, a loclr cylinder in one of said apertures to actuate the locking bolt, means insertable and removable only from the interior of the lock for holding the lock cylinder in position, a slotted sleeve in the longitudinal aperture of the body member, a locking bolt slidable through said sleeve, said bolt being notched on one side only, the notch in the locking bolt co-operating with a cam on the lock cylinder to permit the actuation of the locking bolt and a projection on the locking boit extending into the slot in the sleeve to prevent rotation of the bolt rela-tively to the sleeve.
8. ln a steering post lock, a body member apertured for the reception of a slidable locking bolt and a lock cylinder, a headed locking bolt slidable through one of the apertures, means for actuating; said bolt, the head of said locking; bolt being notched for the reception of a latch member, and a notched latch member adapted to rest in said notch in the bolt head and to be forced upwardly when the bolt head is Withdrawn into registry with the notch in the latch member, so that the latch will be in position to hold the locking bolt in retracted position.
