Be it known that we, WILLIAM ALLEN BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Ocean City, county of Cape May, State of New Jersey, and ELBERT A. Con- BIN, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing in Swarthmore, county of Delaware, State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and useful Heating, Cooling, and Lighting Fixture, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a novel construction of a heating, cooling and lighting fixture, and comprises a novel construction of a standard, adapted to be supported upon a floor, table or the like, and provided at its upper end with supporting devices .for electric limps, an electric fan or blower, and a plurality of electrically heated elements, which are supported and collocated in a novel manner, and provided with electrical connections and controls therefor, so that a plurality of elements are under the convenient manual control of the operator, or user of the device.
It further consists in a novel manner of mounting and supporting the motor of the blowing or fan element, the motor casing being pivotally supported from a semi-circular frame carried by the lamp standard, in which semi-circular frame, a ring is 1nount ed having the motor casing pivotally supported therein.
It further consists of a novel manner of counterbalancing the motor ring and its ad juncts, either by means of detachable weights or by frictional means.
It further consists .of novel frictional means, whereby the motor ring is supported or counterbalanced in any of its extreme or intermediate positions.
It further consists of'a novel constructionof a heating element, comprised of a plurality of controllable electrically heated devices, which can be electrically energized either independently or simultaneously, at the will of the user, whereby a low heat with g the fan may be employed, or a high heat with the fan or the fan alone may be employed; thus permitting the operator to regulate the amount of heat desired, to the desired extent in accordance with climatic conditions.
It further consists of a novel construction of a heater casing, a novel junction box therefor, and novel means for connecting up the terminals of the heating elements in said junction box, so that said heating elements may be energized independently or simultaneously.
It further consists of a novel construction of a heater body in which the electrically heated elements are contained and concealed, which is provided with upper inwardly and downwardly, deflected hooks or tongues, which serve as the air deflectors.
It further consists of a novel manner of collocating the blower and heating elements of the novel character above described, with novel electric controls therefor.
It further consists of a novel manner of supporting the blowing element upon its standard, and of supporting the heating element and the shade upon arms mounted on the motor casing of the blowing element.
It further consists of other novel features of construction and advantage, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
For the purpose of illustrating ourinvention, we have shown in the accompanying drawings an embodiment thereof which is at present preferred by us, since this embodiment will be found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, butit will, however, be understood that various instrumentalities of which our invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that our invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization -,of these instrumentalities, as herein shown and described. At the upper end of the standard 4, we attaeh or cast the semi-circular frame 12,.best seen in Figures 2 and 3 through which passes the diametrically positioned cap screws or screws 13, (see Figure 10) which engage the curved brackets 14, which are attached to or cast on the ring 15, which is of less diameter than the frame 12, as will be understood from Figure 3. The ring 15 serves as a support for the motor casing 10,
of the fan or blower element, which is pivotally mounted therein, on the diametrically opposite ivot points 16. 17 designates a boss on tie. ring 15, having a hole therein (see Figurel) in which is seated the pin 18, which carries or supports the counterbalance 19, said pin being held fast in place by the set screw '20. The opposite side of the ring 15 and its adjuncts is counterbalanced by the weight or counterbalance 21, which is secured to the ring 15 by the brackets 22 (see Figure 3), it being understood that the weights 19 and 21 are so proportioned that the motor, blower, heater and their adjuncts will be accurately counterbalanced in any of the extreine or intermediate positlons into which they may be turned.
. If desired we may dispense with the weights 19 and 21 as seen in Figure 12 and secure substantially the same results by the tightening of the screws 13, already referred to.
It will be understood from Figure 10, that each of the screws 13 has the threaded portion 23, which engages the bracket 14, and
for the application of a spanner wrench thereto for convenience in tightening. The motor casing 10 carries the shaft 26, onwhich is the fan or blower 27. Upon said motor casing is secured the lower ends of the arms 28, which are preferably three in number." The upper portions 29, of said arms are converged to fit and support the inner walls of the shade 6, and their upper terminals 31 are inwardly deflected to serve as supports for the supporting arms or brackets 32 of the heating element 33, whose construction will be understood from F ig ures 4 to 7. The heating element 33 is composed of a thickened body portion 34, which is preferably a gray iron casting, having the bottom corrugated annular flange'or skirt 35 above which is the thickened body portion containing the annular upper and lower channels 36 and 37, in each of which is contained an electrically heated element as 38, seen in Figures 4 and 6. We may pack the chambers 36 and 37 with suitable nonconducting material, if desired. The upper portion of "the heating element 33 has the annular flange 39, which is provided at its top with the inwardly and downwardly deflected hooks or tongues 40, which serve as air deflectors. The terminals of the electrically heated elen'ients 38, are contained in the junction box 41, which is composed of the. inner member 42 and the detachable outer member or cap 43, said members being secured together by the bolts 44. The manner of positioning and connecting the ends of theheating elements 38, will be understood from Figure 6, it being apparent that if desired but a single heating element need be employed or be in circuit, or if desired both heating elements can be used simultaneously, by the proper manipulation of the switch 45, seen in Figure 8. While this switch may be placed at any convenient point, we preferably locate it in the chamher 2, (see Figure 8), which is readily accessible, upon lifting the lid 3, (see Figure l 1). We preferably employ a switch having five controls or contact points, as 46, 47, 48, 49 and 50, from which lead the lines 51, 52, 54, and 55, respectively (see Figure 8) which lead to the five stations as follows-- low heat and fan, high heat and fan, fan high speed, fan low speed, and all oil. We have deemed it unnecessary to show or describe in detail the various leads from the lines 51 to 55 to the elements above mentioned, as an one of said lines may be readily connecte by any electrician to the desired element, and its functioning controlled by the manipulation of the switch arm 56,
as is evident, the lines to said elements being concealed and leading upwardly through the hollow standard 4. I
In Figure 11 'we have shown one form of a wiring diagram, which may be employed, the lines in which to the lights, blower and heating elements can be readily traced, although it is obvious that other methods of wiring may be employed.
In lieu of the single shade 6 as seen in Figure 1, which may be composed of mica, glass or other opaque or translucent, fire proof material, we may employ a double shade, as seen in Figure 9, the innersliade 57 being composed of the materials above specified while the outer shade 58, supported thereon by the upper and lower brackets 59 and 60, may be of silk or other fabric or oiled paper or parchment or the like.
The motor 10 and its adjuncts may be stationary or if desired caused automatically to oscillate by means of the link 61, seen in Figure 1, which is actuated by means of any of the conventional devices. now in use as seen in Figures 14 and 15. The top of the device can be finished by an apertured plate as 62, which can be bolted or otherwise secured to or upon the arms 31 in any suitable manner as seen Figure 1.
The electrically driven fan or blower, which we have shown as employed in the present instance, is a conventional, standard type of motor or blower, but it will be evident that any other suitable type of motor or blower may be employed.
The operation is as follows :In the embodiment shown in Figure 1, the device is shown as designed for a table or boudoir lamp and in moderate weather, as in spring or fall it can be utilized solely as a lamp, the electric lights only being employed. In hot weather, the fan or blower element can be utilized at high or low speed either alone or in conjunction with the lights, as is evident. In cold weather when it is desired to use the heat element 33, it will be ap parent that if desired, only a single electrically heated element 38 may be employed, or if desired the plurality of such heating elements may be energized, and said electrically heated elements may be used either independently or siu'iultaneously, either ,with or without the blower, as is evident,
I or latitude.
The lights 7 are fixedly secured to the upper portion of the standard 4, as there is no necessity for rocking or tilting them. The blower 10 and its adjuncts, however, as well as the heating elements and shade or shades are adapted to be turned or tilted into any angle from the vertical to a-horizontal plane when it is desired to' diffuse or direct the current of hot or cool air in any direction, and to be held in any intermediate positions, as may be desired.
In Figure 1, we have shown in full lines the position the parts assume when standing in a vertical plane, and in dotted lines the position the shade 6 and its adjuncts assume when turned into the horizontal plane, it being understood that said parts may be turned into an intermediate posi tion and there secured y the manipulation and tightening of the screws 13.
While our device will function perfectly with the weights 19 and 21 which serve to counterbalance the blower and heater in any position they may assume, which weights in addition serve to absorb the vibrations of the motor, it will be apparent that if desired the weights 19 and 21 may be omitted, as seen in Figure 12 and the blower, heater and their ad uncts held in the desired extreme vertical, horizontal or intermediate I positions by simply tightening the screws 13 and then tightening the set screws 25. The screws 13 may be provided with milled heads or with the spanner holes 30, as seen in Figure 1, for the purpose of quickly effecting the manual rotation thereof, and it will consequently be evident that we may, if desired depend entirely upon the frictional lockin means 13, whose construction will be readily understood from Figure 10. By simply raising the lid 3 which gives access to the switch box 2, we are enabled by the proper manipulation of the button on the switch arm 56 to use the blower at low or high speed alone or with a single electrically heated element or with the double electrically heated elements so that our device is adapted for service in any climate under any climatic-conditions which mayarise. The upper portion of the arms 29 serve as a convenient means for supporting either the single shade 6 or the double shade structure seen in Figure 9, and said arms also function efl'ectively to support the heater element 33 containing the plurality of electrically heated elements 38 adapted to be used independently or conjointly. The top plate 62 is provided withradial arms seen dotted in Figure 2, and when the struc ture is assembled as seen in Figure 1, all the parts are securely fastened together in a rigid and durable manner. The shade 6 is effectively utilized to conceal the lighting, blowing and heating elements, which are grouped within a very small compass, as is evident. We have deemed it unnecessary to describe in detail the precise manner of connecting the terminals of the electrically heated elements 38, seen in Figures 5 and 6, as this can be done in various ways by those skilled in the art, it being only essential that. in the energizing of such elements 38, that they be adapted to function either independently or simultaneously, according to the amount of heat required. It will be evident, if a suitable pedestal is employed in lieu of the standard 4, seen in Figure 1, that the device will effectively function as ,a floor lamp.
In lieu of' one or two heating elements any desired number thereof, as 3-4 or 6 may be used if found necessary or desirable,
and while we have described one form of insulated element, as preferred by us, any standard type of heating element may be used, which may be mounted with or without the metal casing 33, as is evident.
It will be understood that the main object of the set screws 25 is not to hold the ring 15 in any position but to cause the screws 13 to move with the ring 15 and bracket 14 thereby preventing the screws 13 from moving in or out after they have been set, thereby preventing loosening or jamming of the frame 12 from or against the ring 15.
The actuation of the link 61 and the oscillation of the blower and its adjunct-s may be effected by any suitable mcans, such as that disclosed in Figures 3 and 4 of the patent to. lVilliam Allen Brown, No. 1,457,874, which mechanism is shown in Figures 14 and 15 herein, and as its mode of operation is the same as in the Brown patent aforesaid, a detailed description thereof is unnecessary, it being apparent that by the turning or manual adjustment of the finger piece or head 62, the portion 63, is caused to engage the surface 64, whereupon by the intermediate mechanism, rotation is imparted to the shaft 65 and the head or disc 66, so that oscillating movement is imparted to the link 61 when desired, whereupon the blower and its adjuncts are oscillated, on loosening the fin er piece 62, the oscillation of the blower and its adjuncts is stopped. It will be evident that other forms of equivalent devices may be employed.
It will now be apparent that we have devised a novel and useful heating, cooling and lighting fixture which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while we have, in the present instance shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that such embodiment is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character stated, a
standard, a laterally extending frame secured thereto, an electric blower casing, a ring withln said frame in which said casing is supported, pivotal connections common to said ring and the endsof said frame, means for tightening and loosening said pivotal connections, an electric heater,.- and arms common to said casing. and heater for supporting the latter.
2. In a device of the character stated, a standard, a laterally extending frame secured thereto, an electric blower casing, a ring within said frame in which said casing is supported, pivotal connections common to said rlng and the ends of said frame, means for tightening and loosening said pivotal,
connections, an electric heater, and arms common to said casing and heater for supporting the latter, in combination with electric lights supported on the upper end of said standard and positioned below said frame and out of the path of said casing, and its adjuncts.
3. In a device of the character stated, a standard, a laterally extending frame secured thereto, an electric blower casing, a
ring within said frame in which said casing is supported, pivotal connections common to said ring and the ends of said frame, means for tightening and loosening said pivotal connections, an electric heater, and arms 'common to said casing and heater for supmeans for tightening and loosening saidpivotal connections, an electric heater, and arms common to said casing and heater for supporting the latter, in combination with a shade supported on said arms and concealing said casing and heater.
5. In a device of the character stated, a standard, a laterally extending semi-circular frame connected thereto, a ring within said frame. brackets secured to opposite portions of said ring, pivotal connections for the ends of said frame and in threaded engagement with said brackets, a blower casing pivotally supported within said ring. arms on said casing extending upwardly, a heater carried by said arms, and weights secured to opposite portions of said inner ring.
6. In a device of the character stated, a standard, a laterally extending frame secured thereto, an electric blower casing, an inner ring within said frame in which said casing is supported, pivotal connections common-to said ring and the ends of said frame, means for tightening and loosening said pivotal connections, an electric heater, arms common to said casing and heater for supporting the latter, and weights attached to opposite portions of said inner ring for countcrbalancing the latter and its adjuncts.
7. In a device of the character stated, a standard, a laterally extending frame secured thereto, an electric blower casing, an inner ring within said frame in which said casing is supported, pivotal connections common to said ring and the ends of said frame, means for ti htening and loosening said pivotal connectlons, an electric heater, arms common to said casing and heater for supporting the latter, and weights attached to opposite portions of said inner ring for counterbalancing the latter and its adjuncts. in combination with electric lights sup orted on the upper end of said stan ard an positioned below said frame and out of the path of said casing, and its adjuncts.

In a device of the character stated, a standard, a laterally extending frame secured thereto, an electric blower easing, an inner ring within said frame in which said casing is supported, pivotal connections common to said ring and the ends of said frame, means for ti htening and loosening said pivotal connections, an electric heater, arms common to said casing and heater for supporting the latter, and weights attached to opposite portions of said inner ring for counterbalancing the latter and its adjuncts, in combination with electric lights supported on the upper end of said standard and positioned below said frame and out of the path of said casing, and a shade supported upon said arms and concealing said lights, heater and easing.
9. In a device of the character stated, a standard, a laterally extending frame secured thereto, an electric blower easing. an inner ring within said frame in which said casing. is supported, pivotal connections common to said ring and the ends of said frame, means for tightening and loosening said pivotal connections, an electric heater, arms common to said casing and heater. for supporting the latter, and weights attached to opposite portions of said inner ring for counterbalancing the latter and its adjuncts, in combination with a shade supported on said arms and concealing saidcasing and heater.
10. In a device of the character stated, a standard, a laterally extending semi-circular frame connected thereto, a ring within said frame, brackets secured to opposite portions of said ring, pivotal connections for the ends of said frame and in threaded en gagement with said brackets, a blower casing pivotally supported within said ring, arms on said casing extending upwardly, a plurality of electrically heated elements carried by said arms, and weights secured to opposite portions of said inner ring.
11. In a device of the character stated, a standard, a laterally extending semi-circular frame connected thereto, a ring within said frame, brackets secured to opposite portions of said ring, pivotal connections for the ends of said frame and in threaded engagement with said brackets, a blower casing pivotally supported within said ring, arms on said casing extending upwardly, a plurality of electrically heated elements carried .by said arms, and weights secured to opposite portions of said inner ring, in combination with electric lights supported from said standard and projecting laterally in proximity to said frame and ring.
12. In a device of the character stated, a standard, a laterally extending semi-circular frame connected thereto, a ring within said frame, brackets secured to opposite portions of said ring, pivotal connections for the ends of said frame and in threaded engagement with said brackets, a blower casmg pivotally supported within said rin arms on said casing extending upwardly, a plurality of electrically heated elements carried by said arms, and weights secured to opposite portions of said inner ring, in coinbination with electric lights sup orted from said standard and projecting aterally in proximity to said frame and ring, and a shade supported on said arms and enclosing said lights blower and heating elements.
13. In a device of the character stated, a standard, a laterall extending semi-circular frame connected thereto, a ring within said frame, brackets secured to opposite portions of said rin pivotal connections for the ends of said rame and in threaded engagement with said brackets, a blower casing pivotally supported within said ring, arms on said casing extending upwardly, a plurality of electrically heated elements carried by said arms, and weights secured to opposite portions of said inner ring, in

combination with a shade supported on said arms and enclosing the blower and heater.
14.- In a device of the character stated, .a'
standard, a blower supported thereon, a plurality of electrically heated elements, supported in proximity to said blower, and control means for running said blower at high or low speed either alone or in conjunction with one or more of said clcctrically heated elements.
15. In a device of the character stated, a hollow standard a base therefor, a blower supported thereon, a plurality of electrically heated elements supported in proximity to said blower, a switch box in said base and lines leading therefrom through said hollow standard to said blower and heating elements, and provided with control means for running said blower at high or low speed either alone or in conjunction with one ormore of said heating elements.
16. In a device of the character stated, a standard, an electric blower supported therefrom, an electric heater supported in proximity to ,said blower and comprising a casing having a plurality of chambers therein, electrically heated elements in said chambers, a junction box carried by said casing and having an outer removable cap, and means for energizing one or more of said electrically heated elements.
17. In a device of the character stated. an electric heater element, comprising a casing, having a plurality of chambers therein, electrically heated elements in said chambers, a junction box for said casing having an outer removable cap and means for energizing said elements either separately or simultaneously,
18. In a device of the character stated. an electric heater element, comprising a casing, having a plurality of chambers therein, electrically heated elements in said chambers, a junction box for said casing having an outer removable cap and means for energizing said elements eitherjseparately or simultaneously, said casing having an upper flange, provided with inwardly deflected tongues actingas air deflectors and a lower skirt.
19. In a device of the character stated, a standard, an inner ring pivotally supported from said standard, a blower carried by said ring, counterbalancing devices for said blower carried by said ring and an electric heater supported in proximity to said blower.
20. In a device of the character stated, a standard, an inner ring pivotally supported from said standard, a. blower carried by said ring, counterbalancing devices for said blower carried by said ring and an electric heater j, supported in proximity to said blower, in combination with a shade surrounding said ring,'blower and heater.
21. In a device of the character stated, a

24. In a device of the character stated, a. standard, an inner ring pivotally supported from said standard, a blower carried by said ring, counterbalancing devices for said blower carried by said ring and an electric heater supported in proximity to said blower, in combination with electric lights supported from said standard, a shade surrounding said lights, blower and heater, and means for oscillating said blower and heater as a unit.
25. In a. device of the character stated, an electric blower, a two element electric heater, a support for said blower and heater. means for operating said blower at a low or high speed and means for energizing one or both of the heater elements.
26. In a device of the character stated. an electric blower, a two element electric heater, a support for said blower and heater, means for operating said blower at a low or high speed and means for energizing one or both of the heater elements, in conjunction with the actuation of said blower.
27. In a device of the character st ated. an electric blower, an electric heater in proximity thereto, a support for said blower and heater, means for operating said blower at a low or high speed and a single switching means for energizing said heater element, simultaneously with any speed of said blower.
28. In a device of the character stated, an electric blower. an electric heater, a. support for said blower and heater, means for operating said blower at a low or high speed and 21, single switching means for energizing said heater clement either alone or in conjunction with said blower at any of its speeds.-
29. In a device of the character stated, a standard, a laterally extending frame secured thereto, an electric blower casing, a ring within said frame in which said casing is supported, pivotal connections common to said ring and the ends of said frame. means for tightening and loosening said pivotal connections. an electric heater. arms common to said blower casing and heater for supporting the latter, and ashade supported on said arms and concealing said casing and heater. said shade, blower casing and heater being movable as a unit.
30. standard, laterally extending stationary electric lights supported from the upper portion thereof, a frame supported from said standard above said lights, a ring pivotally supported in said frame, a blower pivotally supported in said ring and a heater supported on said blower, said lights being out of the path of said ring, blowerand their adjuncts.

In a device of the character stated, a standard, laterally extending stationary electric lights supported from the upper portion thereof, a frame supported from said standard above said lights, a ring pivotally supported in said frame, a blower pivotally supported in said ring, a heater supported on said blower, said lights being out of the path of said ring, blower and their adjuncts, and a shade surrounding said lights, frame, ring, blower and heater.

In a device of the character stated, a standard, laterally extendin stationary electric lights supported from the upper portion thereof, a frame supported from said standard above said lights, a ring pivotally supported in said frame, a blower supported in said ring, a heater supported on said blower, said lights'bein out of the path of said ring, blower and tieir adjuncts, and a shade surrounding said lights, frame, ring,
blower and heater and supported from said heater, said shade, blower and heater being movable as a unit.
37. In a device of the character stated, a
standard, laterally extending stationary elec-" tric lights supported from the upper portion thereof, a frame supported from said standard above said lights, a ring pivotally supported in said frame, a blower pivotally supported in said ring and a heater supported on said blower. saitl lights being out of the path of said ring, blower and their adjuncts, in combination with means for oscillating said ring, blower and heater.
38. In a device of the character stated, a standard, laterally extending stationary electric lights supported from the upper portion thereof, a frame supported from said standard above said lights, a ring pivotally supported in said frame, a blower pivotally supported in said ring, a heater supported on said blower, said lights being out of the path of said ring, blower and their adjuncts, and a shade surrounding said lights, frame, ring, blower and heater, in combination with means for oscillating said ring, blower, and heater and shade.
39. In a device of the character stated, a standard, late-rally extending stationary electric lights supported from the upper porsupported in said frame, a blower supported in said ring, a heater supported on said blower, said lights being out of the path of said ring, blower and their adjuncts, and a shade surrounding said lights, frame, ring, blower and heater and supported from said heater, said shade, Blowera'nd heater being movable as a unit, in combination with means for oscillating said shade, blower and heater.
40. In a device of the character stated, the combination of a frame, a. blower supporting ring pivotally supported in said frame, cap screws having threaded terminals for pivot-ally supporting said ring, and' ,set screws adapted to engage said threaded terminals, to lock the latter with respect to said ring.
41. In a device of the character stated, the combination of a stationary laterally extending frame, a blower supporting ring pivotally supported in said frame, oppositely located cap screws having unthreaded portions freely rotatable in said frame and threaded terminals for pivotally supporting said ring and set screws adapted to engage said threaded terminals to lock the latter with respect to said ring.
