Description

Patented June 30, 11874 N-PEYERS, FHDTO-UTHDGRAPHER. WASHINGTON, D. 0'
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
WALTER KNIGHT, OF SAl.\ ANDREAS, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN INDEXING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,651, dated June 30, 1874; application filed May 16,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER KNIGHT, of San Andreas, in the county of (Jalaveras and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Indexing, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation of my improved bookkeepers index-case, and Fig. 2 a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre spondin g parts.
The object of my invention is to furnish for bookkeepers, accountants, and others, a neat and convenient casefor keeping the index of account or other books therein, it being so arranged on the desk that it indicates, without loss of time, the page of the party in the book, and cxpedites his work thereby. My invention consists of acase with open top and front part, which carries in side grooves suitable frames with the index-tables of the names slid therein, said frames being raised by means of suitable levers and keys, exposing thereby the index-table required for obtaining instantly the page 'of the book.
In the drawing, A represents a box or case of suitable size and finish, which is provided with a larger base-piece to be placed stationary or detachably to some convenient part of the desk. The top and the upper part of the front of easing A are open, to exhibit thereby any one of the fran'ies B, which slide in suita ble side grooves aof case A. Any number of sliding frames 13 may be arranged in box A, one for each letter or less, they being made in neat and light manner, of tin or other suitable material. Sheets of paper or pasteboard on which, in alphabetical order, the names, with number of page of account or other book, are written, are placed and secured into the frames B in such manner that they may be easily ta ken out to be kept in order and then replaced for ready reference. The lower part of each frame B is connected by a ,pivoted lever-rod, d, with a lever, 6, having its fulcrum f at the slotted side, front, or other convenient part of the case. The ends of levers 0 project to the outside of case A in the form of keys, on which the letters contained in their frames are indicated. By pressing down the key with the initial letter of the name thereon, the corresponding frame and index are raised and the page of the book on which the account or other information may be found indicated at a glance. The inconvenience and time consumed by the turning over of the book or ledger to get atthe index are thereby avoided, allowing accouuts to be rendered or otherwise kept up with comparative ease and greater rapidity.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The index-case, consisting of box or case A with sliding frames B containing the alphabetical index-tables, to be raised by corresponding levers and keys connected therewith, substantially in the manner-and for the purpose set forth.
