Application filed February 23, 192e. Serial No. 694,703.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it knownv that We, EnMUND il. ScHWAirriNe and AUGUST R. Seamos, citizens of the United States, residing` at Waco, in the county ot McLennan and State ot Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Posting;` Devices, ot which the following is a specification. reference being had to the accompanying draw- 1ngs. I f vi.
This invention relates to trai for use in connection with loose-leaf binders and has for its object the provision of a novel 'device tor postix'iczloosc leaves in a peculiarly constructed binder such as that which forms the subject matter of our co pendingr application filed February 3, 1924-, Serial No. 694,704-, in Which applicationiwe have discloseda loosesleaf binder including covers through which are passed posts which are slidable into inactive position and which are held in place by peculiar sprint;Y pressed but manually releasalole latch means.
The specific object ot this invention is to provide a tray-like structure upon Which such a loose-leaf binder may be laid and the posts released into inoperative position, a tray element or platform being provided on Which may be laid the successive leaves or roups of leaves removed from the released Inder, together with new leaves which are to be added or inserted at any point.,'means .being also provided for squaring up the pile of leaves to bring' the postreceiving holes in registration.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character which is adjustable tor handling leaves ott different sizes and which is, moreover, providedwith auxiliary n'ieans for permitting; or effecting the positioning, of statement sheets onother leaves et dit 'ferent sizes from the ledger ot leaves.
An additional object is the` provision of a device ot this character which avoids the Well-known operation of the usual post to post transfer.
A further object is the provision ot a. structure of this character which Will be simple'and inexpensive in manufacture, easy to use, efficient and durable in service and a general improvement in the art.
llllith the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction aiicharrangement of parts to'be hereinafter more fully de "ter de vices scribed and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which1 Figure l is a perspective view of the device showing a binder thereon in initial position.
Figure Q is a perspective View looking towards the rear of the device.
Figure 3 is a cross section on the line 3-3 of Figure l.
Figure 4 is a horizontal section showing the latch or catch mechanism ot the binder.
Figure 5 is a sectional view through the upper tray member showing' the binder top cover and a plurality of' leaves thereon.
As stated above, the dei-ice is intended for use in connect-ion with a specially constructed binder which is disclosed in our co pending application but which is also here illustrated as being essential to a' proper understanding of the invent-ion.
Referring more particularly to the draw-- ings, We have shown the binder as including` a base, a cover and post cooperating With latch means. The numeral l() designates the base as a Whole, which includes a relatively stationary section ll and a mov-4 able section 12. The hinged structure connecting these sections is not illustrated as it forms no part ot thc present device and 'for the further reason that it is Well-hnown in the art and vmight be varied Within Wide limits. This base is intended to support a plurality ot superposedleaves or sheets i3 which, as is welldmcwn, are iorined with holes lll.v At spaced, points the stationary section 1l oit' the hase has plates lemliedn ded or otherwise anchored therein, and slidably engaged through these plates are post-s 16 which are provided their lower ends with enlarged heads li" preventing them :trom being Withdrawn upwardly out of association with the base. 'lhe plates 'l5 are countersunlt or recessed for the reception oit the heads l'?" so 'that the bottom surface will 'be flush and Vwill, not cause scarring' or inarring et a table, stand or shelf uppn `which the binder may be laid. llhese posts have rounded and tapered upper ends l@ and are termed with a plurality of ligrooves 19 for a purpose to be described. The sheets i3 have the holes la therein engaged upon these posts and in this Way all the sheets will be held against relative displacement. Ilfhe posts are provided with grooves 16"?v within which engage screws lain the plates Mill ' 15 fr preventing the osts from slipping through. the base when te holding means 1s released.
The binding means comprises a" top'or cover 2O which includes a stationary sectlon 21 and a movable section 22 hinged upon one ing in vokes 28 and 29, respectively, which straddleJ the latches and which are pivotally connected therewith, as shown. at .30. The inner ends of bars or rods 26 and 27 are threaded and connected by a turn-buckle 31l whereby the rods may be adjusted so that the latches 25 may be disengaged successively. Connected with the yoke 29 is a ,Coil spring 32 which operates to hold the latches normally in engagement with the grooved posts.
For shifting the yokes to disengage the latches from the posts we provide a filler block 32a which extends across the arms of the`yoke 29 and with which is connected a plunger 33 slidable Ythrough a partition 34 in the member 21 and carrying a. head or button' 35.
In the use ofthe device the ledger sheets to be bound are engaged vupon the posts and the top member is likewise slipped there* onto, the posts passing through the holes provided in the top member 21. As the top is pressed down the latches 25 will slide over the grooves in the posts until the sheets have been compressed fully or to the desired extent and the latches will remain engaged `with the grooves and exert a pawl and ratchet-like action which will prevent the cover or top fromv movinggupwardly.
When, for any reason, it is desired'to remove the top, as for instance when inserting more sheets or in removing the same,.it is merely' necessary that the operator grasp and pull upon the head or button 35 which will result in moving the yokes and rods longitudinally against the action of the spring 32 so that the latches will be withdrawn from engagement with the posts.
In carrying out the present invention, we provide a frame 'structure which includes a back 36, sides 37, an intermediate member 38, and upper and lower trays 39 and 40 respectively. The latter is intended to support the assembled binder which is placed thereon in upright position and so arranged that the posts 16 will be disposed above slots 41 in the tray or platform. At one end of the tray isa stop 43 which facilitates proper positioning of the binder. .As the slots 41 are elongated, it is obvious that binders of different sizes may be accommodated, that is to say, the device will take care of binders in which the posts are different distances apart. y
Extending longitudinally. and mounted upon the top of the tray 39 near the back be swung into the vertical position shown by dotted lines' in Figure 1, with the plate 45 disposed in horizontal position, upon the cleat 44/ For maintaining this posltion, we provide a bracket 51 -mounted on the back 36 and having its upper end 52v extended i laterally and flush with the top surface of the cleat.
Near one end, and in fact corresponding to the slots 41, the upper tray 39 is formed with a transverse groove 53of a size and shape to receive the member 21'of the binder top or cover, and'in the bottom of'. this groove are slots 54 adapted to receive the free ends of the posts 16 as will be eX- plained. Mounted on one side 37 in vertical alignment with the slot 54 nearest the shelf 40 is a bracket 55 having-fa hole 56 and provided for a purpose to be explained.
In the operation, the assembled binder to be added to or to be corrected is laid upon the shelf 40 in engagement with the stop 43 and'with the posts 16 above the slots 41. The operator presses slightly upon 'the top or cover of the binder and, at the same time, pulls upon the knob to move the rods 26 andA 27 lengthwise and swing the latches 25 out of engagement with the grooved posts whereupon the posts will drop gravitationally below the binder and into the slots 41, thev screws preventing the posts from slipping through the base. The operator then removes the top or4 cover comprising the parts 21 and 22 and lays it in invertedv position upon the tray `39 with the member 21 fitting within. the groove 53,lthe post holes being above the slots 54. It should be understood that beforedoing this the squarng frame comprised ,by the parts 45 to 49 must be swung upon the hinges 50 into the vertical position shown by dotted lines in Figure 1. The top or cover 2O having been placed upon the shelf 39, the squaz'-, ing 4l'ramc is swung down so as to lie thereupon. l j usted with respect to the member 46, de-
pending upon `the size \of the vsheets to be The end member 47 must be adrename posted or bound. The sheets 13 are then. re moved 'from the previouslyv assembled binder lying upon the tray ll() and are placed on the cover member 2t) lying on the tray 3f. .tnv new sheets to he added or inserted e treated in thesame manner and it is apparent that the stpiaring traine will cause all the sheets 4 bound in the reguarmanner t to be disposed in registration so as to insure perfect alignment ofthe post receiving holes i4 provided therein. After all the sheets have been placed within the squaring f `ame, the traine is again swungr into the vertical position. and the bottom member 1.() of the binder is placed in position upon the top of the pile ot leaves. The posts 1G which are still held within the base ot the binder are then inserted through the registering holes and will be automatically latched hv the members By pressing' down srnnewhat on the uppern'iostv element. it is apparent that the leaves or sheets will be compressed and held firmly.
In order to line up statement' and ledger sheets a titer posting. the stat-ement sheets being shorter than the, ledger sheets and being beneath the saine when placed in the trame. the side member t6 o t the trame is removed and a telnptn'arxr post is inserted through the liront hole olE the hindern i`ter it is placed in position on the top tray 39. this` tempo 'ary post passing through the forward slot 54 and engaging' within the stop 55. After all the sheets have been posted. this temporary post is withdrmvn and the sheets above described.
From the foregoing description and a study o the drawings., it will be apparent that We have thus provided a simply constructed transfer tray device which will greatly At'acilitate the handling and binding ot ledger or other sheets. The `combinatitm ot' this device with the peculiarly,7 eonstructed hinder provides an equipment; which possesses inn lti tudinous advantages. *Foremost among which is the elimination ot' the usual post to post transfer. @wing to the simplicity ot' the arrangement, it1 is obvious that very little skill will be involved in the operation ot the binder so that the device should recommend itself tofthose having occasion to use the" same.
While We have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention. it is to be understood that we reserve the right to 'make such ehangesin :the form, construction and arrangement ofparts as will not depart from thespirit of the invention or. the scope of the subjoined claims.
