THOMAS M. VAUGHAN, OF SALEM, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE ELECTRIC FURLNACF'.V COMPANY, OF SALEM, 0HIO, A CORPORATION OLE OHIO.
GOASTER-WAGON-BODY CONSTRUCTION,
Application led February 11, 1924.
To all 107mm t may concern.'
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. VAUGHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coaster-Tag on-Body Constructions, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to coa-ster wagons and more particularly to the body construction of a wagon of this character especially adapted for the use of children.
The objects of the invention are to provide a body for a coaster wagon in which the body is formed of a one-piece sheet metal bottom reinforced at its edges, the side boards being preferably formed of wood and permanently connected to the bed ends which are each formed of two metal stampings, spot welded or otherwise connected together and removably connected to the body bottom.
The above and other objects may be attained by constructing the body of the wagon in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view partly in section of a wagon provided with a body embodying the invention;
Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same, parts being broken away for the purpose of illustration;
Fig. 3, a perspective view of the metal body bottom;
Figs. 4 and 5, detail perspective views of the two metal stampings which are assembled to form each end member of the bed; and
Fig. 6, a section on the. line 6 6, Fig. 2.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings. y
' The bottom member of the body is formed of a metal sheet or plate 1, the edges of which are preferably turned down and then formed as indicated at 2, for the purpose of reinforcing and strengthening the bed bottom.
The front and rear body holsters 3 and 4 respectively, are connected to the body bottom as by the rivets 5, the wheels 6 being associated therewith in the usual manner. The front and rear bolsters may be reinforced bythe bra-ces 7 connected to the body bottom as by the rivets SS,y and a tongue 9 may be provided for drawing the' wagon.
achend member of the wag'orlr body is Serial No. 692,030.
preferably formed of two metal stampings such as the crown member 10, shown in Fig. 4, and the end member 11 shown in Fig. The end member 11 comprises a metal sheet having the inwardly disposed, angular flanges 12 at its side edges and an outwardly disposed flange 13 at its upper edge, the arcuate spring clip portions 14 being provided at its lower edge.
The crown member 10 is of slightly greater length than the end member 11 and the forward and rear edges thereof are provided with the downturned flanges 15, the ends of said crown member being reduced and bent downward as at 16. The crown member 10 and the flange 13 of the end member may be provided with the depressionsl? arranged to register, the two members being connected together at these points by spot welding or the like.
Vhen the members 10 and 11 are thus connected together as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, it will be seen that the depending eXtensions 16 are spaced from the flanges 12 to receive the end portions of the wooden side members 18, which are secured therein as by rivets 19 or the like passed through the apertures 20 and 21 of the flanges and extensions 16 respectively.
The side boards and end members are thus assembled and form an assembly unit which may be detachably connected to the bed bottom by inserting the spring clip portions 14 into the slots 22 formed in each end portion of the body bottom. Pins 23 may also be fixed in the bed bottom and arranged to engage the apertures 23 formed in the lower edges of the side boards.
From the above, it will be evident that a rigid, yet simple, construction is provided, wherein the side boards and end members may be easily detached as a unit or replaced upon the body bottom, the entire body being formed of metal with the exception of the side boards.
1. In a wagon body, a bed end formed of a metal end member having inturned flanges at its ends, and a horizontal flange at its upper edge, and a sheet metal crown member connected to said horizontal flange and hav ing depending extensions at its ends.
2. In a wagon body, abed end formed of a metal end member having inturned Hanges at its ends, and a horizontal ffan'ge at its upper edge, and a sheet metal crown member connected to said horizontal flange and having depending extensions at its ends, spaced from said end flanges.
3. In a Wagon body, a bed end formed of a metal end member having inturned flanges at its ends, and a horizontal ange at its upper edge, and a sheet metal crown member connected to said horizontal flange and having depending extensions at its ends, spaced from said end flanges, and side boardshaving their end portions located between said end flanges and depending extensions connected thereto.
4l. In a Wagon body ofthe character described, a bed end including a sheet'metal end member having angular flanges at its and a horizontal flange at its upper edge z provided With locating bosses and a sheet metal crown member provided with loe-ating bosses adapted to register with and to be spot Welded to the locating bosses in said flange, downturned flanges at the forward and rear edges of the crown member and reduced, depending extensions at the ends of the crown member spaced from and parallel with the angular end flanges upon the end member.
In testimony that l claim the above, l have hereunto subscribed myname.
THOMAS M. VAUGHAN.
