UNITED S'rrm'ns PATENT Orrrcn.
JOHN W. DAVIS, OF NEWTON, NORTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHEELS FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,612, dated June 3 ,1874 application. filed May 9, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN W. DAVIS, of Newton, in the county of Catawba and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Vagon Wheel Hub, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of two tubes, each with a large head, screwed together one in the other, and two collars constituting the middle portion of the hub, fitted on the large tube, and clamped together by them to hold the spokes, the collars being either plain or notched in the face, which clamps the spokes, and the inner tube forming the box for the axle, all as hereinafter described.
Figures 1 and 2 are sectional elevations of my improved wheel-hub, taken in an axial plane; and Figs. 3 and 4 are sections taken at right angles thereto.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
A is the inner tube forming the axle-box; B, the outer tube forming the core of the hub. O is the head of tube A, and D the head of tube B. Tube A fits within tube B, and they screw together at E. F representsthe mid dle portion of the hub, in the form of two collars, fitted on the tube B, and binding the spokes G between them. The spokes may be made large at the parts clamped between these collars to fill the whole space, the collars being plain, as in Figs. 1 and 3, or they may be .made smaller and fitted in gains or mortises formed in the faces of the collars, as in Figs. 2 and 4:.
The tube A, which constitutes the axle-box, will be cored out in the middle portion with a sand-core to form an oil space, and the ends to form the axle-bearing will be cast on chills for making them hard, smooth, and durable. The plain form of the collars will, preferably, beused when the' spokes are allin one plane, and the slotted form will be used when spokes are to be staggered.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to vsecure by Letters Patent The combination of the tubes A B, collars F, and spokes G, the tubes being headed and screwed together substantially as specified.
JOHN WESLEY DAVIS.
