N. J. YONKER FURNACE Filed Feb. 20, 1922 Patented Feb. 10, 1925u UNITED vSTATES NICHOLAS J. YNKER, F IMUSKEGON, MICHIGAN.
FURNACE.
Application filed February 2U, 1922. Serial No, 537,906.
To all whom `it may concern.'
Be it known that l, NIcHoLAs J. Yonirnn,
l a citizen of the United States, residing at Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful lfinprovenients in Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.,
'lhe present invention relates to furnaces; and its object is to provide casings for such furnaces as are eniployed for heating` dWellings and other buildings by hot air, which casings shall have means whereby the heated air may be directed to the several air vents of the casing and the air pipes leading therefrom as may be desired. Y
rlhis object is attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the
structure hereinafter particularly described in the body of this specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a top plan view (partially broken away to show the interior) of a furnace casing and the air pipes leading therefrom;
Figure 2 is a side view of the upper portion of the saine, partially sectioned on line 2 2 of Figure l;
y Figure 3 is a sectional View of a portion ofthe saine taken on line 3 3 of Figure l, and showing a portion of one of the varies;
Figure fi is a sectional vieu7 of the saine taken on line lr-ff of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a view of the central portion of the interior of the top of the furnace casing, showing the swingabie niounting of the vanes;
Figure 6 is a view of the inner portion of `one of the vanes; and
Figure 7 is a. sectional view of the saine taken on either line 7 7 of Figure (i.
ln the embodiment; of the invention chosen for illustration by the drawing and for detailed description in the body of this specification, the furnace casing, designated generally l, has a top portion, designated generally 2, having spaced vents through which the heated air is delivered to the air pipes 3,-Ll, 5, 6, i" for distribution to the various parts or rooms of the building to be heated. This top portion 2 is depressed at its center, extending cross-sectionally in an inclined direction from its center upwardly toward its side, as particularly shown in Figure 2. A plurality of vanes 8, `9, 10, 1l, l2 (corresponding in number `With the l1ot air pipes) are swingably mounted on a vertical post 13,` substantially concentric With the vertical central axis of the furnace casing. Such mounting may be provided by bending tongues lei at the inner edge of the vane, so as to encircle the post 13, as shown in Figure 27, the tongues of the several varies beine stepped interrelatively to each other, as particularly seen in Figure 5, and the vanos being held on the post as by a nut l5. Springs 16 extending outwardly from the free ends of the Janes und slidably contacting in an annular groove 'i7 in the casing` tops interior serve to hold by friction the vanes in any position t-o which they may be swung.
`When the furnace is being constructed, it is equipped with a suiiicient number of vanes corresponding to the. number of hot-air pipes leading therefrom, and these vanes are swung to such iuterrelative positions as will direct a predetermined amount of heated air to one pipe and a predetermined (greater or less) .uuount to another pipe, as their capacities may require, all as illustrated in Figure l. yFliereupon the vanes may, if desired, be permanently fined in such adjusted position; or the vanes inay reinain swingable for` future adjustment as inay be desired, in which case they inay be swung either way by their pins or handles i8 esu tending through narrow slits 19 in the side of the casings top.
The invention being intended to he pointed out in the claim, is not to be limited to or by details of construction of the par tisular einbodiincnt thereof illust ated by the drawing or as hereinbefore described.
l claim:
ln a furnace casing, a top having an annular groove, spaced slits and spaced air vents in its side, V7zines swingably mounted concentrically with the vertical asis of tho furnace casingl and adapted to direct currents of air to the vents resp actively; incans carried by the Yanes and in frictiouul contact with the inner surface of the annular groove for holding the varies in adjusted position, and means carried by the vanes and projecting through the slits for adjust` ing` the vanes.
ln testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand at Grand Rapids, Michigan, thisv 15th day of February, 1922.
NicHoLas J. Yoiuunt.
