Description
1,526,104 L. L. TULEY SAMPLING DEVI CE Filed May 10, 1924 jefizz/ellfly,
Patented Feb. IO, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
LEMUEL TULEY, OF WOOD RIVER, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T0 STANDARD OILCOM- PANY, OF WHITING, INDIANA, AND CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF IN DIANA.
SAMPLING DEVICE.
Application filed May 10,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEMUEL L. TULEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wood River, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sampling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates toan improvement in sampling devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a broken view of my improved I device, in longitudinal vertical section;
Figure 2 is a section on line-2-2, Fig. 1, and
Figure 3 is a broken section on line 33, Fig. 1.
The mediat y designed my improved device is to provide-it of simple and durable construction involving an assembly of parts.
and kerosene) holding tanks, such as tank v cars and storage-tanks, to ascertain the amounts of water or other foreign matter in such'contents.
A receptacle ofthe "preferred cylindrical shape is represented at 4. .The'upper end of the receptacle is closed by a cap 5 screwing into its upper end and having'a handleafiording vent-pipe 6, of sufficient length, extending centrally from it, being shown as screwing into a threaded opening in the cap and fastened by a nut 7 and the cap 5 is also formed with an eccentric nipple-- like extension 8 containing a flanged packing-gland 9 in its outer end, secured in place by a perforated screw cap 10. The lower end of the receptacle has a cap 11 screwed into it, this cap containing a central opening having an internally threaded flanged nipple 12 screwed into 'it against a gasket 13, and providing a valve-seat 14; and the cap 11 screws about the lower ends of the legs of a yoke 15 extending vertically into the receptacle, and through the head of which a valve-stem 16 works and carries on its lower end a tapering valve 16 resiliently held against'the seat 14 by a spring 17 about the stem and confined by the yokehead against the valve, the latter having an abutment teat 18 pro'ecting from its tapered extremity. A va ve-raising rod 19,

duced by the handle 6 into thetank to. be
sampled, as through its manhole, until the teat 18 strikes the tank-bottom and the valve is opened by the impact, beingheld off its seat by the Weight of the device and enabling the receptacle to'fill with a sample of the contents taken from the lowest depth thereof, whereupon the device, With the valve closed by the recoil-force of the spring 17, is withdrawn and the sample is discharged, by manipulating the handle 21 to unseat the valve, into a suitable receptacle for examination to determine from the showing of the sample, the condition of the tank-contents as to foreign matter therein.
I realize that considerable variation ispossible in the details of construction herein shown and described, and I do not intend, by illustrating or describing a single specific orpreferred embodiment of my improvement, to be limited'thereto, it being my, intention by the appended claim to claim protection for all the novelt there may be in my invention as fully as t 1e state of the art will permit. Iclaim: A sampling device of the character described, comprising a receptacle formed of an open-ended cylinder having caps screwed into its oppositeends, one'cap having a threaded nipple screwed centrally therein about the legs of a yoke extending into the cylinder, a valve-seat in said nipple, a valve at said seat having an abutment-teat projecting from its outer end beyond the receptacle and a stemextending from its inner end through said yoke and having a valve seating spring confined about it against the valve, the other cap having formed in tergrally therewith a nipple-like extension provided with packing, a handleforming vent-pipe extending from said last-named cap, and a rod working through said extension with its inner end connected to the valve-stem, and carrying a handle on its outer end.
LEMUEL L. TULEY.
