To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, NORMAN B. HURD, a citizen of the United Sta-tes of America, residing at New Britain, Connecticut, have invented new and usefulmprovements in Door Locks and Latches, of which the `following` is a specification.
My 'l invention relates to door locks and latches, and consists in providing a new form of clogging mechanism for the latchbolt and stop-work, by which, when the door is closed and the stop-work is on, both the latch and stop-work will be positively blocked against repression from the outside, and yet said latch may be retracted by a key, for entrance from the outside, or by a knob on the inside of the door. In this instance the latch dogging means is of unique construction and operates in a novel manner. In this construction the stop-work cannot be thrown off by lan unauthorized person, since it requires a preliminary movement of another part, preferably key-controlled, before the stop-work can be so moved. his is of great advantage because sometimes one in charge of a building, such as a school, may, at the closing hour, throw the stop-work on so that the door will be locked during the closed period. Anyone who happened to remain in the building, on going out, could carelessly or deliberately, reverse the ordinary stop-work so as to free the outer knob and thus leave the door unlocked. By my present construction the one in authority may throw the stop work on in the customary way, but when it is once 011, it cannot be thrown off eX- cepting by the building attendant or someone in authority. It will be understood, of course, that the stop-work referred to is the means by which the'outer knob or handle may be blocked against movement so that the latch cannot be retracted from the outside excepting by means of a suitable key. This beinga very common way of locking a door instead of using a regulation dead bolt.

S represents a coil spring mounted freely on the latch bolt tail and functioning to normally press the latch 2 outwardly. 9 represents a shoulder or abutment on the rear end of the tail 7. 10 is a latch retracting lever, pivoted at 11, one end of said lever bearing against the abutment 9 and the other end beingA adapted for engagement by the key roll-back 5. 12 is another latch retracting lever, pivoted at 13. 14 is a rollback for operation by an indoor knob. This roll-back 14, as shown in Fig. 1, usually overlies the roll-back 4, which latter is controlled by the outdoor knob.v I vhave not shown the ordinary inner and outer knobs and the corresponding spindles for coaction and 14 since such details are very well known and require no illustration. The stop-work plungers are of the conventional type and the same are connected within the lock case by the usual walking-beam 15, so that, when one plunger is pushed in, the other will be puslhed out. As shown in Fig. 1, the stop-,work is in the on position, clogging the outer knob rollback 4; that is to say, the rear end of the plunger 3a has a nose 16 which projects into a recess on the hub of the roll-back 4, there-- by preventing it from being turned. hen the plunger 3 is pushed in, the plunger r3a will be moved out, so that the tail 16 will be withdrawn from engagement with the roll-back 4, freeing the latter. 17 is a dogging lever, which functions to dog the latch bolt 2 and the stop-work plunger 3 when said lever stands in the position shown in solid lines in Fig. 1. This dogging lever 17 is pivoted at 18 and its lower edge rests upon a pin 19 on the latdh-retracting lever 10. There is an inclineJ on the lower edge of the Gli cloggingl lever 17, to the rear of the pin 1S?, so that, when the lever 10 is swung back it will quickly litt 'thc clogging lever 1T to the dotted line position. This will 'force the latch inwardly carrying` with it the lever 22. Betore the incline on the outer end 24 ot the lever encounters the tace plate the rear beveled portion 2Gv will engage the co-acting beveled portion 26 on theI dogging lever, so that continued repression of the latch 2 and lever 22 will operate to lif"J the treo cud ot' the clogging lever, whereby said latch and lever 22 maybe fully repressed by the action of the strike plate. lllhen the door is fully closed the latch 2 and the head 241 sin'niltaneously spring l'orward and enter the box-like recess and occupy theposition shown in Fig. 2. On the last end ot the forward movementot the latch into the box strike, the rear end ot' the lever 22 clears the'forward end ot the clogging lever 17, so that the latter will their drop clown behind the lever 22 and operate as an abutment to dog the latch.
lVhile l have shown my invention in a preferred form, l am aware that various changes may be made without departure from the spirit and scope ofthe invention as disclosed herein, and as covered theI following claims.
I claim;
1. In a door lock, a spring latch bolt, a dog' therefor carried thereby and movable 'ith respect thereto, a movable dogg-ing abutment within the lock arranged to enand disengage said clog, meanspcarried bythe lock to move saiddog` into its clogging position when the latch is retracted, co-acting means to be carried by the door casing for holding the, dogging device in its latch-clogging position when'the'door is closed and the latch is projected, and means to shift the clogging abutment within the lock to permit the latch to be withdrawn to unlock the door.
2. In a door lock, a spring latch bolt, a dog therefor carried thereby and movable thereon to a. clogging and non-clogging position, means on the lock co-acting with the dog to move the same to the clogging position when the latch is retracted, means to be carried on the door casing to hold the dog in said clogging position when the latch is projected, a movable clogging abutment Within the lock for co-operation with said clog, and key-controlled means to shift said abutment out of the latch clogging position on the first partial movementl of said means and to retract the latch on a further movement of said means.
3. ln a door lock, a spring latch bolt, means at the indoor side of the lock to permit the latch bolt to be retracted thereby at all times, two separate means at the outdoor side of said lock, one of the latter being key-controlled and arranged to retract the latch at all times, a movable stop-Work for the other outdoor latch retracting mea-ns whereby the latter may be dogged at Will, with means co-acting with said stop-Work to hold the same against being released from its clogging position exceptingthrough the medium of a preliminary operation by said key-controlled means.

5. ln a door lock, a latch, an inside and an outside roll-back for independent hand operation Jfor retracting the latch, a keycontrollecl roll-back tor the outdoor side of the lock operable to retract said latch at all times, stop-Work mechanism operable in one position to hold the outer hand operated roll-back against movement, means to dog the stoep-Work in said holding position, with means independent of the stop-Work for releasing the stop-Work clogging means to permit said stop-Work to be thro-Wn off to release said outer hand operated roll-back, a clogging device carried by the latch bolt and co-actingwith the stop-Work clogging means when the stop-Work is in its roll-back holding position whereby said 'la-tch bolt will be held against retraction until its dog is released, said key-controlled roll-back when turned operating to lirst move the stop-Work dog out of its latch clogging position and to then operating to retract the latch and permit the door to be opened.
