PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH GA`WLIK, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
HORN FOR PHO'NOGR APHS.
Application filed January 26, 1922. Serial No. 531,98O
T o ((ZZ whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosnrH GAWLIK, a :itizen of the Unitec States, residing at 608 Lincoln Avenue, in the city of Milwaukee, county ot lilwaukee, and State of `Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Horns for Phonographs, of which the *Following is a specification.
This invention relates to phonograph horus.
lbjects of this invention are to provide a phonograph horn in which a natural rendition ot the original tone qualities is approxin'iated in which the harsh offensive sounds such as that due to scratching or scraping, are not reproduced in the same volume as the sonorous musical sounds recorded. and in which means are provided whereby the amplification ot the sound is atteined in such a manner that the full resonant characteristics are secured.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:-
Figure i is a longitudinal, sectional View ot' the horn, such view corresponding to a section on the line l-1 of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is an' end view of the horn with a portion broken away.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary plan View ot' a portion of the inner wall ot the horn.
,Referriug more in detail to the drawing, it will be seen that the horn comprises a. contracted necl: portion 'l and a tlaring outer, or end portion and that the horn is curved and is gradually tapered from the coutracted necl: to the outer end. The horn comprises an upper, curved, flaring top wall 2'. substantially vertical side walls 3 and a curv d, tlarinp iot-torn wall 4. An auxiliary wall 5 is provided, which contorms to one of the main walls of the horn, such as the lower wall 4, as illustrated in the drawing. This auxiliary 'all is Similarly curved and tlariug and is spaced a slight distance from the wall and towards the neck portion gradually approaches such wall. It is provided with an end wall 6 adjacent the neck portion, which completely closes that end ot' the chamber between the walls 4 and 5.
Openings are provided through the auxiliary wall 5 adiacent its forward portion and in the 'form shown, may comprise a pair ot' Scroll like openings 8 symmetrically ar- *anged with respect to a center line.
It will be seen that the auxiliary wall provides. in effect, a sound board and that a resonant chamber of gradually decreasing cross sectional area is provided between the anxiliary and the main wall. In this manner` the auxiliary wall is free to Vibrate and to resonate to several difierent tones and this action is enhanced by the resonate cavity formed between the walls. It is also to be noted that the higher pitched notes are reintorced by the relatively shallow, resonate chamber and that the lower pitched notes are reintorced by the vibrating sound board In addition to this, the sound board, it will be noted, is ot different width; that is to s' y, is ot a gradually decreasing width as the neck of the horn is approached. In this mannen such sound board may resonate to widely ditl'erent notes and will thus enhance the artistic reproduction ot a piece.
It is further to be noted that the horn is of substantially the same general contour as the commercial horus and it, therefore becomes apparent that it is not necessary to needlessly encumber a phonograph with unsightly parts, but that this horn may be employed in the usual types of phonographs without alteration.
I claim:
A phonograph horn comprising a body portion havinp` a downwardly extending neck and a flared main portion extending outwardly therefrom` said neel: and flared portion having' Vertical side walls and being gradually curved at their upper and lower walls, and an auxiliary wall spaced from said lower wall and conforming approximately to the curvature of said lower wall. said side walls extendin downwardly and joining said anxiliary wall, said bottom wall having a plurality ot scroll slots thercin adjacent its outer end. the conpartment formed between the auxiliary wall and the bottom wall being` the sole auxiliary compartment, all of the parts of said horn bein r rigid.
