To fall w homv t vinyl-concern- Be it known that l, JOHN LEVANDOFSKY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buchtel, in the county ot' Athens and State of Ohio, have invented cert-ain new and usetullmprovements in Lock Nuts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bolt and lock nuts.
An .important object of the invention is to provide al device of the above mentioned character, which is automatically actuated to lock the nut against unscrewing movement upon the bolt, when the nut is screwed upon the bolt a suitable distance.
A further objectI of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, strong and durable.
Other objects and advantages ot' the invention will be apparent during the course of the following' description.
ln the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bolt and nut lock embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal section taken on line 2 2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the same,
Figure 4 is a fragmentary central longitudinal section, showing the locking element before it is tripped, and
Figure 5 is a perspective View of the key and pivot locking element.
1n the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates a bolt, having a screw threaded portion 11, engaged by a nut 12. The screw threaded portion 11 has a longitudinal slot 13, as shown.
The numeral 14 designates a carrier or key, mounted within the longitudinal slot or groove 13, but. not suliiciently wide or thick to extend to the exterior of this groove. The carrier or key 111 is provided at its rear end with a radial head or extension 15, project-ing into an annular recess 16, formed in the rear ot' the nut 12. The carrier or key 1st does not prevent the rotation of the nut 12 upon the bolt, and when the nut is rotated for screwing the same upon the bolt, the head 15, by its engagement with the nut 12 feeds the carrier 14 inwardly with the nut.
Thenumeral1-4 d'e'si'gnatesa locking element as a whole, which is preferably L- shaped. rlhis locking element embodies a head or base 18, mounted within an opening or recess 19 in the carrier or key 14, and pivoted therein at 20. Secured to the head or base 1.2), and arranged at a right angle theret-o is a nger 21, which ist suitably stitl1 and resilient. The outer face of the nut 12 carries ratchet teeth 22.
In operation, the nut is applied to the free end of the bolt, and is screwed thereon, as clearly indicated in Figure 4. When the nut has traveled suliciently inwardly upon the bolt, the free end of the bolt contacts with the head or base 18 of the locking element, swinging it from the vertical to the horizontal position. rlhis base now enters the recess 19 and is adapted to travel with the carrier into the groove 13, as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2. The linger 21 now assumes a vertical or radial position and will trip over the ratchet teeth 22, as the nut is screwed up, but will lock the nut against unscrewing movement, in the selected adjusted position. It .is thus seen that the screwing movement of thev nut may be continued within a substantial range, and it will lock against unscrewing movement when the selected position is. reached.
It is to be understood that the form of my invent-ion herewith shown and described, is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size,` and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope or" the subjo-ined claims.
Having thus described my invention, l claim:
1. A bolt having a screw threaded portion and a longitudinal groove therein, a nut engaging the screw threaded portion and having ratchet teeth, a carrier slidable Within the groove and having a part engaging the nut, and a. locking element. movably mounted upon the carrier and adapted to be automatically shifted by engagement with the bolt into engagement with the ratchet teeth of the nut.
2. A bolt having' a screw threaded portion and a longitudinal groove therein, a nutengaging the screw threaded portion and having ratchet teeth, a carrier slidable within the groove and having a part engaging the nut to be shifted thereby, and a pivote-Ll locking element secured to the carrier, said locking element having a head to Contact `with the end of the bolt t0 he shifted thereby and an Iarm to have engagement with the ratchet teeth of the nut.
` 3. A holt having .a- 'screw threaded porL tion and a longitudinal groove therein, a nut engaging the screw threaded portion and having a recess upon one side thereof,
10 a Carrier slidable Within the groove and having a laterally extending head to engage Within the recess, said carrier having a recess inits outer end, a locking element pivoted Within the recess and including a hase and a resilient arm at a right angle tol the base, and ratchet teeth carried by the outer end of the nut.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
JOHN LEVANDOFSKY.
