Be it known that I, I-IUGo F. BIEDERMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tuscaloosa, in the county of Tuscaloosa and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SawmilLCai1- riage Setworks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a sawmill carriage set works, and particularly to a conn struction adapted to leffect a tensioning or snubbing action between the set shaft and the knee and the individual adjusting means for the knee in order to eliminate all slack and lost motion between these parts.
In this art it is important in securing straight or accurate sawing to avoid any slack between the setting parts which would result in displacement of `the knee in the operation of the saw, and such slack or lost motion is commonly due to loose connections and wear of movable members which defeat a firm and accurate adjustment of the knees both from the set shaft and for the individual adjusting lever therefor. The lost motion due to this slack rapidly increases in the use of the set works, due to friction, and frequently becomes such an element as to permit a definite movementof the knee in the cutting action of the saw upon the, timber, which defeats a straight out and also the object of the individual adjusting leverI by which a finer adjust-ment of the knees independently of the set shaft is effected.
For the purpose of obviating these objections in the practical operation of a sawmill set works I have provided a flexible connection extending from the setting shaft to the adjusting lever for the knee, with means for maintaining this connection under a constant and even tension as it is fed from the set shaft during the movement of the knee in the successive cutting operations. Such a connection effectually retains the adjusting lever and its latch in close contact while all of the slack between the setting rack and its pinion is taken up so that the parts when adjusted are firmly and accurately held.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction of sawmill set Works in which a flexible connection extends from the set shaft on the carriage to the individual adjusting lever for the 1924. Serial No. 712,446.
knee, together with means for maintaining said connection under a constant tension.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of the tensioning means adapted to be mounted upon the head block and comprising a cylinder having a piston projected therefrom and carrying av sheave over which the flexible connection between the parts is eX- tended.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of. cuff adapted for adjustable mounting upon the adjusting lever so as to maintainthe latch member in intimate contact with the lever and through the cooperation of the tension device with said lever in constant contact with one of the engaging walls of the sector with which the latch cooperates.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.

The invention may be applied to any desired type of sawmill carriage or head block and in its present application the carriage 10 is provided with a head block 1l which carries a setting shaft 12 provided with the usual pinion 13 which cooperates with the rack teeth 14 of the sliding rack 15 by which the knee 16 is adjusted. The adjustment of all of the knees is simultaneously effected through this connection in the usual manner.
The present invention provides for an independent adjustment of each knee relative to the rack so as to effect an individual action thereof in properly aligning the timber to be cut. This is necessary where (ill inclined faces are encountered as it is often desirable, to set one, knee at a diilerent position from the'othersj particularly in removing the outer slab or layer 'from a log and in compensating for a. previously irregularly sawed surface. This individual adjustment is eilected by means of lever pivotally mounted at 18 upon the rearward extension 19 of the knee and having iVV lower end connected by a link Q() to pointQl upon the rack l5. The tension device applied to the flexible connection 22 may be of any preferred character, a desirable form being herein shoivn as comprising a cylinder 2S having a piston member 29 at the outer end or which a Wheel or sheave 30 is pivotally mounted at 31 and over which the connection 22 passez. Having thus described my invention, what l claim as neiv and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

8. ln a sawmill set works, the combination of a head block, a set shaft, a setting knee, a looped connection between said set shaft and knee, and tension means acting upon the loop of said connection to maintain a constant tension and avoid slack therein.
9. ln a sawmill set works, a knee mounted upon the head block for rack and pinion adjustment thereon from a set shaft, an individual adjusting lever pivoted upon the knee and connected to said rack, means for holdingsaid lever at its adjusted positions, a flexible connection extending from the set shaft to said lever for adjustable connection thereto, and a tension device carried by the head block and disposed to engage said connection intermediate the set shaft and adjusting lever.
