To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fmi S. STRAUB, a cit izen of the United States, residing at Los tingeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Operating il/lechanisn'i, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to manually operated mechanism for operating swinging doors from a. remote point, and a purpose of my invention is the provision of a door operating mechanism of extremely simple construction, easy of installation, positive in action and readily actuated to effect the opening and closing of a door and the latching thereof when in closed position.
I willdescribc one form of door operating mechanism embodying my invention and will thenpoint out thenovel features thereof in claims.

Similar reference characters refer to similar parts in each of the several views.
Referring specifically to the drawings my invention, in its present embodiment, comprises a plate secured to the door frame or the frame 16 of a door D and provided with an opening which registers with an opening formed in the frame and in which is adapted to extend the latch bolt 17 of the conventional form of door latching and locking mechanism. Pivoted on the plate 15 at the point indicated at 18 is an actuating bolt 19, such bolt being of substantially U form and normally urged to a withdrawn position with respect to the opening of said plate by means of a spring 20. The bolt 19 when swung in clockwise direction is adapted to force the latch bolt 17 from the opening of'the door frame in re leasing the door D to permit opening thereof.
The means for actuating the bolt 19 comprises in the present instance a wire 21 connected at one end to the bolt 19 and at its opposite end to the bellcranlr lever 22 pivoted at the point 23 upon the door frame and operatively connected to an arm 2 1 by means of a wire 25. its clearly shown in Fig. 8, the arm 24; is pivoted at the point indicated at 26 upon a plate 27 secured to the door jarnb 28. The arm 2% is provided with an upper horizontal portion extended through. a slot 27 formed in the plate 27, a vertical portion disposed between the door casing and jamb, and a lower horizontal portion indicated at 24F whichis provided with a tapered end. as clearlyshou 'n in Fig. 7. [he end of the portion 2% is adapted to contact with a head of a screw 29 threadedly engaging within a plunger 30 slidably mounted within a cylinder 31 provided with an extension which is bolted to the upper edge of the door D, such as clearly shown in Fig. 8. The cylinder 31 is slotted to accommodate the screw 29 and to thereby allow of the longitudinal movement of the plunger 30 within the cylinder. Connected at one end of the screw 29 is a connecting rod 33 which, as clearly shown in Fig. 9.. is connected at its opposite end to a blocl: 8d slidably mounted in a guideway 35 sustained on that wall disposed at right angles to the wall of the door opening by means of brackets 36 as is clearly shown in Fig. 5. As shouvn in Fig. 6, the guide is of rectangular formation in cross section, with the block 34 of a corresponding contour and provided with an car 37 to which is pivotallv connected the rod 33.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 5, a wire 38 is connected to the block 34 and extended through a conduit 39 adapted to be embedded in the plaster of the wall as shown in Fig. 1, the opposite end of the wire being connected to a rod 40 slidable in a bracket 41 secured to the wall and connected to a block 42 slidable in a rectangular guideway 43 sustained on the wall by means of brackets l The guideway is slotted to accommodate the shank 45 of a knob 46, the former being; threadedly fitted within the block as is indicated at 34,
In practice, the guideway 43 is adapted to be sustained on a vertical wall of building at the top of a flight of stairs, with the wall 38 being inclined downwardly to the guideway 35 which is positioned upon the wall preferably in the san'ie plane as the top edge of the door D. lVith the door D in closed position as shown in Fig. the knob 46 is advanced toward the forward end of the guideway i3, and when it is desired to open the door D the lcnob .is pulled rearwardly thereby moving the blocl: 4-2 to effect a corresponding movement of the rod 40 that the wire 38 is actuated to move the block 34- rearwardly within the blocl: As the block 3% is moved rearwardly the connecting rod exerts a pulling; action upon the screw 29 to slide the plunger 30 within the cylinder 31. Because of the angular arrangement of the rod 33, the pull upon the screw 29 is such as to swing the door D to open position, but before this operation can take place it is necessary that the bolt 19 be actuated to release the latch bolt 17. As the screw is moved longitudinall of the cylinder 31 its head engages the tapered end 2-1 thereby swinging the arm 24 about the pivot 26 to exert a. pulling action upon the wire 25. The wire 25 now functions to actuate the lever 22 to move the bolt 19 through the wire 21 so that the free end of the bolt passes inwardly through the plate 15 in forcing); the latch bolt 27 from the door frame and thereby releasing the door so that it may be swung to open position. It is to be understood that when the door is in open position, the spring; 20 functions to return the bolt 19 to normal position, and simultaneously therewith the arm 24 is also returned to normal position. Because of the formation of the tapered end of the arm it permits the unrestricted movement of the screw to its normal position when the door is moved to closed position.
Although I have herein shown and described only one form of door operating mechanism embodying my invention, it is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made herein without departing from the spirit of the invention and the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A door operating mechanism of the character described comprising a pair of guideways, members slidable in the guideways. means for operatively connecting the members, a third guideway adapted to be sustained on a door, a member movable in the guideway and including a projection extendingcxteriorly of the guideway and operatively connected to one of the first mentioned members, a pivotally sustained arm having; a tapered end engageable with said projection, a latch bolt retracting memher, and means for operatively connecting the lastmentioned member to said arm so that movement of the arm by said projection will effect actuation of said member.
2. A door operating mechanism of the character described comprising a guideway, a member movable in the guideway, a knob connected to the member, a rod connected to the member, a flexible member connected to said rod, a conduit for housing said flexible member, a second guideway, a member slidable in the second guideway and connected to'said flexible member, a cylinder adapted to be sustained upon a door, a plunger movable within the cylinder, a projection formed on the plunger and extending extcriorly of the cylinder, a rod connecting said extension with the second mentioned slidable member, a slotted plate, an arm pivoted on the plate and extending through said slot and having a tapered free end adapted for engagement with said extension, a lever operativelv connected to the arm, a pivoted bolt operatively connected to the lever, a plate adapted to slidably receive one end of the bolt, and a spring for normally urging the bolt to retracted position with respect to said plate.
