Description

Patented Feb. 10,1925.
v UNIHTEDWSTATES GEORGE L. KA'VANAGH, O'F MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
METHOD OF TREATING CERTAIN DISEASES.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern Be'it known that I, Gnonen L. KAVANAGH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Treat-ing Certain Diseases, of which the following is a. full, clear, and exact description.
,This invention relates to improvements inmethod of treating certain diseases, especially rectal diseases, and the object of the invention is to pnovide a safe, convenient and not uncomfortable method of treating the primary cause of such diseases.
It has been determined that the primary cause of manyrectal and intestinal diseases is constipation and, according to this invention, the various diseases are treated primarily by removing their initial cause.
A study of constipation from an anatomical point of view indicates that the disease or condition is not necessarily due to improper living conditions, but is in some degree at least the logical result of advancing age. In youth, the organs are soft, pliable and highly elastic. This applies particularly to the internal and external sphincter which control respectively the con traction .of the rectum and anus. With advancing age, these muscles lose some of their elasticity and gradually shrink or contract, so that the orifices gradually decrease in size. This gradual reduction of orifice area combined with the gradually reducing activity of advancing age results in a gradually increasing retention of waste products. The use of medicinal preparations or lubricants naturally affords no permanent correction. When once this permanently contracted condition is manifest, it is sooner or later followed by one or more of the common ailments, such as inflamed or prolapsed rectum, hemorrhoids or prolapsis ani.
According treatment is, effected by gently dilating the anus and rectum until the organs are'restored to their youthful size. This dilation is of course mechanical, but is assisted to a certain extent by the application of suit able medicinal preparations. At the same timethat the dilation" is being efl'e'cted, remedial substances ma be introduced either by means of the di itor or internally to cleanse and stimulate the intestines, parto the present invention, the.

ticulary the colon. Preferably the dilato-rs are of inexpensive and readily obtainable material, which in itself contains beneficial properties, and the size of the dilator is increased as the treatment proceeds until the desired result is obtained.
In greater detail, the invention is as follows An ordinary carrot is shaped by means of a suitable instrument into a cylindrical body of suitable size having a blunt point and an enl'ar ed butt end. This serves as both an applicator for medicinal preparations and as a dilator. Preferably to prepare the carrot as an applicator, it is provided with a recess for a capsule of the desired preparation, the recess being located according to the organ or part-thereof to which it is desired to apply tne remedy. The applicator is preferably dipped in boiling water immediately before use for the purpose of softening the outer surface of the vegetable matter and converting the same to a species of lubricant. The boiling water may contain in solution any preparation with which it is desired to impregnate the applicator for the purpose of transferring the same to the'organs. The applicator is introduced and held in place by any suitable form of harness. The applicator is renewed as often as necessary and, at
the discretion of the physician supervising the treatment, applicators of gradually increasing size are used. After a reasonable length of time a permanently enlarged condition of the organs results, which is merely the restoration to their normal condition. While other substances would serve quite as well in a mechanical way, the carrot is chosen on account of its recognized soothing and healing effect when applied in the form of a poultice to inflamed surfaces. Once the organs are restored to normal size, the various organs of the body which have been directly or indirectly aflected resume their normal functions and the distressing evidences of abnormal conditions cease. By this means, such complaints as acid stomach, indigestion, intestinal inflammation, hemorrhoids, etc., may be entirely cured or the conditions very greatly alleviated.
While the invention has heretofore been described solely in its relation to the diseases named, it will be understood that its use is not thus limited, as it may be used for treating other ailments and complaints.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is 1. A. method of treating stomach, intestinal and rectal diseases which consists in forming immediately prior to use an applicator of desired size and form and composed of natural. vegetable substance, developing medicinal and lubricating qualities of the applicator by immersing the same in hot Water, and immediately thereafter introducing the applicator into the rectum or annut.
2. A method of producing an applicator for use in the treatment of stomach, intestinal and rectal diseases, which consists in shaping a natural vegetable substance to facilitate insertion of same in an orifice of the human body and immersin said substance in boiling Water immediately prior to using the same.
3.'A method' o f producing-an applicator for use in the treatment of stomach, intestinal and rectal diseases, which consists in taking a carrot in its natural state and shaping same to facilitate introduction thereof into an orifice of the human body and. im-
mersing said carrot in boiling Water prior to use in order to develop its inherent emollient and lubricating qualities.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
