To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. JERNATOW- SKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dannemora, in the county of Clinton and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Faucets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plumbing apparatus particularly to faucets, and has for its object the provision of a novel faucetprovided with push button operated means for permittng flow of either hot or cold water or both therethrough, other push button means being provided for cutting oil the flow.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character in which the push button operated plungers are provided with automatic locking means which will hold the valves in open position until the release plunger is depressed. 7
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, pleasing in appearance, easy to operate, positive in action, durable in service and a general improvement in the art. p
lvith the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of co-nstructon to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my fancet associated with hot and cold water inlet pipes,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the device with the valves in closed position,
Figure 3 is a similar View showing one of the valves moved to open position and automatically locked,
Figure 4 is a cross section on the line titt of Figure 2,

Referring more particularly to the draw ings the letters A and B designate hot and cold water pipes with. which my device is associated. In carrying out my invention I provide a substantially T-shaped casing 10 which may be constructed in the usual manner except that a portion of its top is open to permit placing of the various parts thereinto, this top being closed by a plate 11 held in position by suitable screws in: dicatedat 12. The numeral 13 designates the outlet nose of the casing. The casing is, as shown, substantially U-snaped in plan to provide arms 14 which are connected with the pipes A and B by conventional unions or couplings illustrated at 15.
Located within the arms 14 are partitions 16 formed with valve seats 17 normally closed by valves 18 suitably carried by the ends of angularly shaped rods or stems 19 which are slidable through guides 20.
Located within the casing is a supporting frame 21 having its ends formed with up turned standards 22 upon which are pivoted, as shown at 23, levers 2a which have their outer ends upturned and curved back or toward each other at a somewhat acute angle, these upturned ends being pivotally connected at 25 with the inner ends of the stems or rods 19. The undersides of the inner ends of the levers 24 are formed with lugs 26 which engage within coil springs 27 seated within sockets 28 on the frame 21, these springs being sufficiently strong to hold the valves 18 normally seated against the water pressure.
The plate 11 is formed with upwardly pressed portions 29 formed with holes through which are slid'able plunger-s 80 equipped with push buttons 31 and which have their lower ends engaging within rccesses 82 on the upper sides of the inner ends of the levers 25L. The formation of these upwardly pressed portions defines cups within which are located packing elements 33 engaged by compressors 3 1 to define a species of packing gland which will prevent leakage of water around the plungers.
In order that the valves 18 may be locked in open position when either or both plungers may be depressed, I provide the confronting edges of the lower ends of the plungers with teeth 35 with which cooperate pawls 36 pivot-ed upon arms 37 having their inner ends engaged within a sleeve 38 secured upon a third plunger 39 which is slid able through a hole in an upwardly pressed portion 40 in the plate 11,- this upwardl" pressed portion bein similar to and located between the portions 29. The plunger 39 carries a push button head 41 and passes through a packing gland 43 similar to the members 34 and likewise serving to compress packing material 4 1 which is for the purpose of preventing leakage. The underside of the sleeve 38 carries a lug 4L5 engaging within one end of a coil spring 46 which has its other end fitting upon a lug 47 carried by a post 48 rising from the center of the frame 21.
Assuming that the faucet has been constructed, arranged and installed, as above described it will be seen that normally the valves 18 close the seats 17 and prevent water from flowing. lVhen either hot or cold water is desired, the operator presses upon the proper push button 31 or both if desired to have a mixture of hot and cold water. Downward movement of either plunger results in swinging the associated lever 24. upon its pivot 23 and this will naturally result in retracting the valve 18 from its seat 17 to permit water to flow into the :asing l0 and subsequently out through the nose 13. hen a plunger 30 is depressed the teeth thereon will engage the associated pawl 36 and owing to the fact that the pawl is pivoted by a knee oint or rule oint it is apparent that the plunger will be locked in depressed position with the valve open. hen it is desired to cut off the flow of water, the operator presses the push button 41 whereupon the resultant downward movement of the sleeve 38 will cause the inner ends of the pawls 37 to be swung downwardly so that their outer ends will be disengaged from the teeth 35 previously engaged thereby. This will permit the springs 27 to return the plungers 30 to normal position and close the valve or valves 18.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simply constructed and consequently inexpensive faucet which will have an attractive appearance and which is extremely simple to 0p crate and control, a notable feature being that the device will automatically lock in its flow permitting position until actually released. This device has the advantage of eliminating the employment of any actuating screws and will therefore simplify faucet construction.
lVhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. A faucet comprising a casing having arms adapted for connection with hot and cold water supply pipes, said casing being provided with a single outlet at its center, valve seats within the end portions of the casing, valves normally closing said seats and carried by slidable rods, levers pivoted within the casing and having their outer ends formed angularly and pivotally connected with the inner ends of said rods, springs normally urging the inner ends of said levers upwardly, and vertically slidable plungers moving through the top of the casing and engaging the tops of the inner ends of the levers whereby to open the valves when depressed.

A. faucet comprising a casing having arms adapted for connection with hot and cold water supply pipes, said casing being provided with a single outlet at its center, valve seats within the end portions of the casing, valves normally closing said seats and carried by slidable rods, levers pivoted within the casing and having theirouter ends formed angular and pivotally connected With the inner ends of said rods, springs normally urging the inner ends of said. levers upwardly, and vertically slidable plungers moving through the top of the casing and engaging the tops of the inner ends of the levers whereby to open the valves when depressed, and automatic locking means for holding a plunger in depressed position. 7
3. A faucet comprising a casing having arms adapted for connection with hot and cold water supply pipes, said casing being provided with a single outlet at its center, valve seats withinthe end portions of the casing, valves normally closing said seats and carried by slidable rods, levers pivoted within the casing and having their outer ends formed angular and pivotally connected with the inner ends of said rods, springs normally urging the inner ends of said levers upwardly, and vertically slidable plungers movingthrough the top of the casing and engaging the tops of the inner ends of the levers whereby to open ,the valves when depressed, and automatic look ing means for holding a plunger in depressed position, and a third plunger for releasing said holding means.
4. A faucet comprising a casing having arms adapted for connection with hot and cold water supply pipes, said casing being provided with a single outlet at its center, valve seats within the end portions of the casing, valves normally closing said seats and carried by slidable rods, levers pivoted within within the casing and having their outer ends formed angular and pivotally connected with the inner ends of said rods, springs normally urging the inner ends of said levers upwardly, and vertically slidable plungers moving through the top of the casing and engaging the tops of the inner ends of the levers whereby to open the valves when depressed, and automatic look ing means for holding a plunger in depressed position, consisting of teeth on the lower ends of the plungers, and an intermediate plunger normally spring pressed upwardly and carrying a sleeve paWls pivoted Within the casing and having their inner ends engaging said sleeve and their outer ends adapted to engage said teeth upon depression of one or both of said first named plungers.
