W. E. DUNSTON BUMPER ATTACHING AND SUPPORTING MEANS Filed May 8, 1925 Patented Feb. 3, 1925.
' UNITED-[STATES PATENT om I WAYNE E. nu'nsron, or nn'rnorr, MICHIGAN, AssIGNoR v'ro THE c. G. srnrno &' numrn'n COMPANY, or nn'rnorr, aronrenn, A CORPORATION or DEL WARE.
sunrise-Arrhenius Am) SUPPORTING MEANS.
Application filed may 8, 192a Serial No. 637,463.
To all i/ihom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WAYNE E DUN STON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State I of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bumper Attachin" 'and Supporting'Means, of which the fo owing is a-full, clear and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings. v This invention relates to means-for sup-' porting bumpers from the frame members of automobiles, and has for its general ob-,
' ject to provide a construction of supporting arm and of cooperating attaching means which willenable' the said arms to be.con-
' "veniently applied to the said members and to enable them, when so applied and secured, to sup ort the bumpers in an eflicient man conveniently applied to the type of 'a'utomo nor. accomplish the foregoing objects by the construction illustrated in the drawings forming part hereof, wherein Fig. I represents a detail in perspective of the front of an automobile having my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2a detail in plan showing a portion of a bumper and the cooperating supporting parts therefor; and Fig. 3 a detail in perspective of the rear'or inner end of one of the supporting arms.
Describing the partsby reference characters, 1 indicates the radiator,'2 one of the side frame members, and 3 a cross brace or tube connecting the front of the said member with the front of the corresponding member on the opposite side (not shown) The front end of each side frame member will be provided with the usual hanger 4: having the eye 5 therein for the spring bolt, the said bolt being indicated at' 6.
In the construction of automobile indicated herein, an apron or guard 14 of sheet metal covers the lower flange and the web of the channeled side member 2. In order to attach the bumper supporting arms to. the front of the vehicle, the following construction is provided: 7 denotes one of the two arms by which the bumper 8 is supported. (the bumper being of'any suitable construction). The front or outer end of each arm 7 is provided with an eye 8 adapted to receive a bolt 9 by which it is connected to a clamp 10 on the-adjacent portion of the bumper. Riveted to the arm 7, intermediate of its ends, is an upright 11,said upright having an aperture 12 therethrough which is adapted receive the spring bolt 6,
whereby the intermediate portion of each arm 7 may be supported by such upright from the sprin bolt. The rear or inner end of each arm 7 1s notched downwardly from the top, as indicated at 7", to permit the lower portion to pass beneath the transverse brace3 without unduly elevating thefrontor outer end of each 'sucharm'. Riveted to the rear or inner end of each arm.is an adapted-to receive the ends of a U-bolt 15:
which extends around the cross member 3,", Y a
the lower ends ofthe bolt extending through the apertures 14: and being providedwith nuts, one of which is indicated at 15. v 7 By. the construction shown and described herein, the bumper supporting arms may bebile illustrated herein and, when so applied,
: Having thusdescribed my invention, what Iclaimis:- 8
1. A bumper supporting arm having an: intermediate supporting member attached to and projecting therefrom and having at its rear or inner end means for attaching the same to across member of an automobile.
2. A bumper supporting arm having intermediate of its ends a vertically extending projection provided with an aperture for the reception of a spring bolt and having at its rear end a bracket adapted to receive a U-bolt. 3. The combination, with the side member of an automobile and a cross member con nected thereto, of a bumper-supporting arm, means securing the rear or inner end of said arm to said cross member, and means for supporting the intermediate portion of said arm from the said side member.
4:. The combination, with the side member of an .automobil.c having a springhanger provided with an eye, and across member connected to said side member, of a bumper supporting arm, a projection intermediate nected thereto, of a' bumper supporting arm having a notch adapted to accommodate the said cross member, anv angular bracket secured to the said arm, a U-bolt connected to said bracket and to said cross member, and means intermediate the ends of said-arm for supporting the same from the said side member. 4 v
6. The combination, with the side member and a cross member of an automobile, of a bumper supporting arm having at its rear end an angle bracket, a U-bolt connecting said bracket to said cross member, a spring hanger carried bythe side member and having an eye for a spring bolt, a spring bolt in said eye, and v a brace member projecting from the intermediate portion of said arm and mounted on said bolt.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aflix my signature.
' WAYNE EDUNSTON.
