Description

T. E. WEST.
Horse Detachers'.
No.l52,536.. PatentedJune30,l874.
IIIYENTOB UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS E. WEST, OF NIGHOLASVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORS'E-DETACHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 152,536, dated June 30, 1874; application filed May 16, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, THOMAS E. WEs'r, of Nicholasville, in the county of Jessamine and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Device for Detaching Horses, of which the following is a specification:
L1 the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 rep resents a top view of a whiffletree with my improved device for detaching horses applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same on the line 0 c, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 shows a side view of a shaft with hook and ring for the back-strap when a vehicle with shafts is used.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre spondin g parts.
The invention relates to an improvement in that class of detaching apparatus for vehicles in which the traces are released from pivoted levers by pulling a strap and allowing them to turn into a position at right angles to the whiftletree, to which they are pivoted. The improvement relates to the arrangement of rings with the whiftletree, and the detachinglevers having the ends of their larger arms curved outward, or provided with a knob or projection, as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, A represents a whifiletree, to whose ends are firmly secured, by bands or socket-rings a, the hook-shaped guards b. To each guard I) is pivoted a lever, B, with short curved front end, fitting closely on the end of guard-hook I), while the longer rear arm is bent along the whiflletree A, and secured thereon by a ring, 61, passing around the Whitfietree, and held thereon by a staple, d. The lever end is slightly curved to prevent ring (I from slipping off voluntarily, being, furthermore, secured by a rubber or other spring, 6, of the whiffletree acting on the longer arm of lever B. A double staple, f, of ring (1 connects, by a rope, f,'with a ring, g, which is equidistant from the lever-rings d, having the ropes or strings of both levers attached at equal length, so that when the additional string g, leading to the driver or other attendant, is pulled, the rings are simultaneously released from the ends of the levers B, and cause thereby the instant spreading of their slightlycurved front ends from the guard-hooks and the ready detaching of the traces from the levers.
lVl en the detaching device is applied to vehicles with shafts, an additional hook and ring, h, for admitting the fastening and ready releasing of the back-straps, is required on the shafts, as indicated in Fig. 3.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the whiffletree A and pivoted levers B, of the rings (1 d, staples d d, springs e e, and cords f g, as shown and described.
