LOCKING DEVICE FOR BROOCHES AND THE LIKE.

Be it known thatI, J OSEF PEJCHAR, a citi- Zen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking Devices for Brooches and the like, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to locking devices for brooches, pins and similar articles, and it has for its object to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction and operation, and which will enable the article of which it forms part, to be worn without danger of its getting lost owing to the accidental opening of its securing means. 1

Without desiring to restrict myself to the exact details shown, I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings two satisfactory forms of my invention. 14, 15 connected at one end by a short wall 16 transverse to the planes of the two parallel walls. The keeper 13 is provided -with a slot extending inwardly from the wall 16 as shown at 17, and then upwardly in the direction toward the upper edge of the keeper 13, this upper slot portion 18 serving to receive the free end of the securing pin 12 which has been introduced through the open end of the slot 17. The two slot portions are so formed as to have at their meeting point an inwardly-projecting nose 19. I

20 hinged to said walls by a hinge pin 21 and formed with a slot 22 which also serves to receive the securing pin 12 when the plate 20 is swung into locking position. The slot 22 also is formedwith a projecting nose 23 which cooperates with the projection 19 in amanner which will be described below. The slot 22 divides the plate 20 into two parts the outer one of which, 24 forms a lip which serves to guide the locking plate 20 in its swinging movement, and which also has another purpose which will be described further on. At its upper end, that is, at its portion farthest away from the pivot 21, the locking member 20 is provided with a rounded projection 25 which forms a handle for the convenient manipulation of the looking member.

The operation of my locking device is as follows: Before the brooch or other article is secured in place, the locking member or plate 20 is brought to the open position, Fig. 2. The article is then placed in its position on the garment by passing the securing pin 12 through the fabric and then insert-ing the free end of such pin into the slot 17 18. After this has been done, the locking member 20 is brought from the open position Fig. 2 to the closed or looking position, Fig. 3. It will be seen from this latter view that this movement brings the projection 23 close to the projection 19 and into a position in which the two projections together hold the pin 12 securely in the socket or slot portion 18 and prevent it positively from leaving the slot. It will also be seen from Fig. 3 that a certain effort has to be exerted to bring the projection 23 past the pin 12. After the projection 23 has passed the pin 12, it snaps in behind such pin, thus looking the plate 20 in its pin-retaining position. The outer ends of the

19 and 23 may even overlap slightly, as shown in Fig. 3.

17, 18. If through carelessness or for some other reason the securing pin 12 at the moment of closing of the locking plate 20, should not lie in the innermost portion of the

19, 23 have been brought together, should happen to be in a position such as indicated by the dot-and-dash circle in Fig. 3, the pin will stilLbe held in the slot portion 17, the lip 2i preventing it from leaving such slot portion.

The projection 25 not only serves as a handle;as pointed out above, but it also acts as a lock for holding the plate 29 in its closed or locking position. This \vill'be clear from Fig. 8 which shows that in order to bring the plate 20 to its lockirigposition illustrated, it is necessary to iiorce'the pro jectio n 25 over the upper 'edge 16 of the wall 16 of the holder 13. After the projection 25 has been snapped over this edge 16, the plate or locking member 20 is securely held in its pin-locking position andthere is no danger of its getting out of such position and releasing the pin 12. r

Fig. 5 shows a construction differing from the form of my'invention illustrated by Figs. 1 to 4, only by the provision ofztwo locking members 20 arranged side by side in a double holder or keeper consisting of two members 13, said locking mel'nbers being movable independently of each other. Each of the keepers 13. is of the same constructionas the keeper 13, and each of the locking members 20 is of the same construction as the locking member 20. The advantage of the duplication of the locking members as shown in Fig. 5, is that if one of these locking. members should be brought i at a point opposite to said end wall and havaccidentally to the open or pin-releasing poing a portion adapted to be swung toward sition, there would still be the other locking member to hold the pin 12 firmly in its p0 .sition within the other member of the double keeper. 7

Preferably, in both forms of my invention, the

20 or 20 are in frictional contact with the adjacent inner faces of the keeper walls 14 and 1.5, and such frictional engagement will act as an additional safeguard to hold the locking members 20 or 2k and prevent their accidental displacement.

Various modifications may be made without departing from the nature of my invention as set forth in the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

A locking device for the pins brooches and other articles, comprising a keeper having a slot with an opening for the passage of the pin, and a locking member pivotally secured to said keeper'and having a portion adapted to be swung across said slot at a distance from said opening so as to hold the .pin in the in'nerend of said slot, said portions being in frictional engagement with the walls of said keeper.

2. A locking device for the pins of brooches and other articles, comprising a keeper having a slot with an opening for thepa ssage of the pin, and a locking member pivotally secured to said keeper and having a projection adapted to be swung across of I said slot so as' to hold thepin in said slot and means on said member cooperating with said pin for locking said member in its pinholding position. V

3. A locking device for the pins of brooches and other articles, comprising a keeper having a slot with an opening for the passage of the pin, and a locking member securedto said keeper movably, said locking member having a portion adapted to be moved across and toiclose ofi said slot adjacent to the inner end thereof and an other portion adapted to close said slot adj acent to said opening. v

A locking device for the pins" of brooches and other articles, comprising a keeper having a slot with an opening; for the passage of the pin, the wall of said" slot being formed with a projection located at a distance from the inner end'of'the'slot, and a locking member secured to said keeper movably and having a portion adapted to be moved toward said'projectionland to cooperatetherewith to close off the inner portion of the slot from said opening.

5. A locking device for ,the pins of brooches and the like, comprisinga keeper having side walls and an end wall'connecting said side walls, said'ke eper also-having a slot for the reception of the pin, and a locking member pivoted to said side waiis said end wall and across said slot so as to close'ofi the inner end of said .slot'from the slot entrance, said portion being in frictional engagement with said sidewva'lls.

6. 3A locking device for; the pins of brooches and other articles, comprising; a keeper having a pair of side walls provided with aligned slots, a locking member-pivotally mounted between said side walls for movement to an opened or a closed position and also provided with a slot, each of said slots having one end thereof open to-permit the passage of the pin, and said side walls and member each being provided with aprojection extending into its slot to provide a restricted passage connecting the inner closed end and the outeropen endof the slot, the projections of said member cooperating with theprojections of said' side wallsto hold the pin within the inner closed end of the slot when said member isfin its closed position and a portion of said member extending across the outer end of the side wall slots when saidmember is in said closed position.

7 A lockingdevice for the pins of brooches and other articles comprising a keeper having a pair of side walls and an end wall. connecting said side walls, a looking member pivotally mounted between said side walls in frictional engagement therewith and movable to an opened or a-closed position, each of said side walls and said member being provided with a slot having one end thereof open, said side Walls and member each having a projection extending into its slot to define a restricted passageway connecting the inner closed end and the outer closed end of said slot. said projections when said member is in its closed position closing the inner end of said slot to retain the pin therein, the projection on 1 said member engaging with said pin to lock said member in closed position and said member being further provided With a notch to engage said end Wall to assist in locking it in closed position.
