Be it known that I, NATHANmL L. HURD, ya citizenofthe United States, and resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,'have invented certain new and usefl Improvements in Scoring Apparatus, of which the followinglis a specification.
This invention is an improved apparatus for scoring sheet material, as for instance to produce weakened lines in a box blank and along which the sheet may be folded. 'lhe main object of the invention is to facilitate the producing of score lines of any desired length by an adj ust-ment of the parts as distinguished from a substitution of parts.
In makin box blanks it is common to form score hues along which ythe flaps may be bent in closing the ends ofv the box. If relatively thick sheetmaterial be employed it is desirable to formthese lines staggered or with offset portions so that the lines along which two opposed-*flaps bend will be out of alignment with those along which the other two iiaps bend, the amount of the oiset being equal to the thickness of the material.
Each section of the score line will be of a length equal to the width of one side of the box` and therefore itis necessary to changel the scoring mechanism to secure the proper lengths of the relatively offset portions of the scoredline each time a box blank of different width of side wall section is to be made.
Herctofore, this class of scoring has been done by a pair of rot-ary lscoring heads cararcuate scoring members cut or cast of the proper length and secured on the peripheries of the heads. Each new size of bofx blank necessitated vthe removal of the old members and the attaching of new ones of different length. A large number of these arcuate members must be kept in stock or new ones ordered for each new box rying cooperative size. In addition to the t-rouble and expense*l of frequentlyproviding` new scoring members, much time is lost in removing the old scoring members and in fastening the new ones accurately in place. Such change in every instance involves the added delay incident to properly aligning the scoring members ofthe two cooperating heads in accurate mating relationship and in aligning the two pairs of heads for similar scoring at opposite ends of the blank. Often difficulty is encountered because'the screw holes of the new member do not match up. with those in the head.
In .the manufacture of various other blanks or forms of sheet material it is often that delay and expense are incurred be cause of the necessity of varying the length or position of a scored weakened or cut line for different blanks or forms, even though there is no, separate offset section of the line.
The present invention obviates the necessity for keeping a varied stock of scoring members on hand or for substituting one sco-ring member for another each time a blank of different design is toi be scored. As one important feature I provide supporting heads having scoring members so constructed that by adjustment, the eective length and relative posltions of the scoring portions may be altered without removing them from the heads. Preferably the scoring members are flexible, or articulated so'thatl operative or working portions may follow along the periphery of the scoring head and inoperative or non-.working portions may be spaced inwardly from the periphery. The scorinv member isshiftable endwise to bring an desired length thereof into or out of effective scoring position.y For producing staggered or offset scoring, one section of each scoring member is laterally offset in respect to another section and the dividing line or point between these two sections may be moved along the periphery of the head and toward or from the point at which the member passes from operative to inoperative position.- I am thus able to effect the necessary adjustments oit the length of the offset sections simply by shifting the iexible member endwise.
As another feature, I provide a series of short scoring units or blocks which are sol itil) side of a center line.
As another feature of the invention, l provide a flexible scoring member in the form of an endless band having an operative run extending along the periphery of the head and an inoperative run housed within the head. As another feature l provide a rotatable member such as a sprocket wheel to 'engage the member and shift it endwise when adjust-ment is desired.
As another feat-ure of the invention the scoring member includes a flexible element upon which a series of scoring blocks or units aremounted, the blocks or units being shifted by the endwise movement of the flexible element. Preferably the blocks are asymmetric and reversible to score on either A single set of blocks may thus be used for scoring a staggered line on the blank, the length of the relatively offset portions being predetermined by the number or arrangement of the blocks on the strip, as well as by the endwise adjustment gf the effective scoring portions of the memer. -As ahother feature of my invention, ll provide clamping or locking means independent of the means for adjusting the scoring members so that the parts are rigidly held. for operation after being adjusted to or assembled in the desired position.
' As a further feature of my invention, l provideaJ stationary or non-adjustable scoring member in addition Vto and disposed between a pair of the flexible endwise ladjustable scoringmembers so that, by having offset4 points intermediate of the end of each of the three members, the two offset points on the adjustable members may be moved toward or from the offset point o n the nonadjustable member. Thus only two members need be adjusted to vary the length of each of the four successive portions of a box blank score line and corresponding in lengths to the four sides of the box.

In Fig. l2 l have shown a box blank having four main sections, A, B, C, D of the proper size and shape to form the four walls of a box or carton. The four wall sections have end flaps a, b, c, al, at each end thereof, the several flaps being separated by slots ej, and the several Wall sections being separated by scored or weakened lines f, g and It. rlhe blank is also provided With score lines at the base or inner end of each flap to define the position at which the blank bends in folding the flaps. If the material be comparatively thick, as for instance multiple-ply board or double-faced corrugated straw board, it is desirable that these last mentioned score lines be staggered so that the flaps and d may properly foldon top of the flaps a and c after the latter have been folded inwardly. Thus the score lines b and d are in alignment with eachother but are offset from the score lines a and c by a distance equal to the thickness of the material. The apparatus hereinafter4 described as particularly designed for forming these score lilies a', b, c', d.
ln the apparatus as shown in Figs. l to 8 inclusive l provide a pair of scoring heads mounted on separate shafts l0 with their peripheries in relatively close cooperative relationship so that they will effectively score material passed therebetween. shafts may be journaled in any appropriate manner, and if desired, may be adjustable toward and from each other in accordance with the thickness of the material being acted upon. Obviously the heads are to be driven at the same rate and in any appropriate timed relationship to the mechanism for feeding the sheet between the heads. Such parts of the machine are well understood in the art and form no vportion of my present invention. Therefore -I have not illustrated them.
Each head is provided with a pair of flexible or articulated members each having a run or portionh disposed in operative scoring The the inner surface of the Leaaaae position on the a plurality of short blocks or units 1.1 whichv are arranged along or strung on a flexible strip 12 which serves to connect the several scoring units and to permit of their relative movement. Each scoring unit 11 has an outer operative face 13 and suitable means for holding the unit on the strip 12. This means is illustrated as inturned flanges ofv hook-shaped ends 14 which engage with strip. This connecting means does not prevent sliding of the units along the strip, but such sliding movement may be prevented by any suitable form of stops, as hereinbefore pointed out. Each unit is also provided with means whereby it may be rigidly clamped te the head. As shown, this means includes beveled outer ends 15, the bevel being on the outer surface, the under surface being flat. The main body portion 16 of the head is provided with a rim or cylindrical flange 17 at its periphery, and presenting an outer surface against which the scoring units may rest. Cooperating with the body 0f the head is a. clamping plate-18 which is secured to the rim 17 in any suitable manner, as for instance by bolts orscrews 19. The outer edge of the clamping plate and one edge of' the body of the head extend outwardly beyond the .outer surface of the flange 17, se as to form an annular groove on the head, and adapted to receive the scoring units. rl`he opposite edges of this groove are under; cut so as to en'gage with the beveled faces of the scoring units. Thus, when the screws 19 are tightened the units will be held firmly against the outer surface of the flange 1'7 and will be rigidly clamped in position. The clamping plate preferably has a flange 20 for engaging with the inner side of the flange 17 to. resist any radially exerted strain on the clamping plate resulting from the cam action on the beveled faces of the scoring units during the tightening of the screws 19. The' parts are so designed that the clamping plate does not directly engage with the end of the flange 17.
The flange 17 constitutingthe rim of the head is provided with apertures therethrough so that each flexible scoring member may be adjusted endwise to bring a portion thereof out of operative position on the outer surface of the rim. At each aperture in the rim there is preferably provided rollers Vor the like over which the flexible scoring member may pass. Preferably there is provided a. roller bolt or other suitable axis carried by the body of the head and a pinion 22 somewhat similarly mounted. The bead is provided with. an annular groove 23 and the flexible 21 mounted on a st udscoring member has its ends connected together within thehead to form an endless band. The flexible scoring member' thus extends along a section of the periphery, thence inwardly around the roller 2l, thence through 'the annular 'groove 23 to the pinion or sprocket wheeli2l2, and thence out through the rim to the periphery. The head presents a. flange 24 forming the inner wall of the groove 23, and the side of the groove is closed by the clamping plate 18 so that this groove forms a pocket or chamber for' the inner or nonoperating run of the scoring member.
For adjusting the member endwise along the periphery the sprocket 22 is provided with teeth 25 for engaging in spaced apertures 26 in the strip 12. llach scoring unit has a recess 27 in the under surface thereof which permits the free passage of the sprocket teeth 25 through the apertures 2G. The two ends of the strip 12 may be secured together in any suitable manner. For instance E have shown in Fig. 3 the-two yends secured between a pair of locking plates 28 which are secured together by suitable screws. The scoring units or blocks are strung along the entire length of the band so that the clamping plates 28 serve as stops to prevent any sliding movement of the units. lf a smaller number of the units be employed, obviously special stops indep pendent of the plates 28 might be employed. Each toothed pinion or sprocket wheel 22 may have a squared hub portion 29 projecting beyond the clamping plate 18 whereby it may be rotated to move the scoring member endwise when the Screws l19 are loosened to release the clamping plate.
The roller 21 and the sprocket are spaced nearly 180 apart along the periphery of the head so that the two rollers 2l for the two flexible scoring members may be mounted closely adjacent to each other at one`side of the wheel. and the two sprocket wheels closely adjacent to each other at kthe opposite side of the wheel. Thus the major portion of the periphery of the head will be provided with operative runs of' the two Vflexible scoring members. Preferably the clamping plate 18 is made of two sections, one for each flexible member, so that one plate may be loosened and its corresponding member adjusted without disturbing the adjustment of the other-.
As one important feature the scoring units have their operating faces materially offset in respect to the center or medial line of the strip 12. The distance to which these faces are thus offset is equal to one-half the distance to which it is desired to offset one section of the scored l'ne iu respect to another. Thus by arranging some of the units on the Strip with their operative faces at one side of the medial line and the remainder of the llo units with their operating faces at the other side of the medial line, these operating faces will act to produce two score lines which are offset in respect to each ot-her to the desired distance.- All of the scoring units are thus identical but the offsetting of the score line is secured by a mere reversal of the position of the scoring units on the strip.
For scering such a cont-inuous staggered line as the line a', b, 0, d of Fig. 12, the head is provided with an additional scoring member acting as a fille-r piece on the periphery of the head between the two rollers 21. A'llhis is shown particularly in Fig. 7, and includes two sections 30 and 31 which are rigidly secured in place in any suitable manner, as for instance by screws. These two sections have their operating faces similar to those of the other scoring units 11, but have them oppositely offset in respect to the medial line. By arranging the units as shown in Fig. 8, it will be apparent that any desired adjustment to produce box blanks with the sides A, B, C, D of various widths, may be secured by the endwise adjustment of the two flexible units. In adjusting the machine the feed mechanism is brought to such position in respect to the heads that the line g of the blank will come at the point indicated by the letter g on Fig. 8, which is the dividing line between the two non-adjustable scoring sections 30 and 31. One of the flexible membersis adjusted endwise until the dividing lino (marked la in Fig. 8) between one set of units 11 and the other set in reverse position, is at a distance (marked C in Fig. 8) equal to the width of the blank section C. The other :flexible member is adjusted endwise until its corresponding dividing line f is at a distance B from the line g equal to lthe width of the blank section B. The portion of one flexible member beyond the line f will act to score the line aof the blank; the other section of the flexible member and the stationary scoring section 30 together will-score the line v25 of the blank; the stationary scoring section 31 and the portion of the other strip to the point h will score the line 0'; and the first part of the last mentioned scoring member beyond the point h will score the line d. Obviously the portions of the two flexible members beyond the points f and h may extend beyond the edge of the biank and in ordinary practice will do so. The adjustment of the feeding mechanism in respect to the head merely .serves to bring the center line g of the blank to the non-adjustable joint g of the head.,
For scoring the two lines a,'b, c', d of the'blank at the pro er distance apart, it is necessary to provi e two pairs of heads. These are mounted for relative axial adjustment on their respective shafts. Preferably each head has a split hub 32 with a clamping screw 33 for tightening it and locking the hea-d in position. Each shaft is preferably provided with a'keyway or spline 34 which has its outer surface provided with teeth so `as to constitute, a. rack bar and the hub is providedwith a pinion 35 mounted between lugs and provided with suitable means, as for instance a squared .end shaft 37, for rotating the pinion.` By loosening the screw 33 the pinion may be rotated to axially adjust the head to the desired position. The spline serves not only as a part of the adjusting mechanism but also serves to prevent any rotation of the head on the shaft.
I Shave heretofore referred to the operating faces of the scoring units but-.have not described such faces in detail. "It is obvious that these faces may be ofany desired chai'- acter, depending upon the kind of material acted upon or the score'line to be produced. Preferably the units used on the two cooperating heads should be of male and female type, as indicated in Fig.
This application is in part a continuation of my prior application, Serial No. 633,866,
filed April 23, 1923. In' Figs. 9, 10 and 11v I have illustrated a form which was illustrated in said application. In the form here shown the flexible members are of the same general character in that they are made up of articulated or flexibly connected units and are endwise adjustable in a peripheral groove of the head so that when the clampin plate is loosened more or less of each mem r may be moved into inoperative position within the head. The head 16 is provided with a clamping plate 18 which cooperates therewith to form a peripheral groove in which are mounted the units 11.

From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have-provided a head for scoring or other operations, which may be very easily adjusted` to produce score lines of different lengths,'and Without thel necessity for any substitution of parts.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the'class described, a rotatable head having a flexible scoring member adjustably mounted thereon and supported throughout its length by said head.
2. In a device'ofthe class described, a r0- tatable head having an opening in the periphery thereof and a flexible scoring member extendingV along thev periphery and through said opening. 3. A rotatable head including a rim portion, a pair of ieXible endless bands each having an operative run located on the rim, and an inoperative run disposed Within the head, said rim having openings therein to permit the entrance of the band into the head and a filler member disposed on the rim between said openings.
50. A scoring device comprising a stripof iexible material having slots therein, and a plurality of scoring units threaded on the strip and having recesses on their under faces registering with the slots.
51. A scoring device comprising a Hat liexible strip and a plurality of scoring blocks including scoring portions odset relative to the medial line of the strip.
52. A scoring block having a scoring face, hook shaped extremities and beveled ends.
53. A scoring device including a flat iieXible strip having a series of apertures therein, and a series of scoring units disposed along the strip.
54. A scoring .head having an opening through the rim thereof, arelatively stationary scoring device at one side of said opening, and a second scorinvr device at the other side of said opening and movable end- Wise into and out of said opening.
