Be it known. that I, VICTOR HJENGLAND,
a citizenof the Unite-d States, ,anda resident ofthe city and. countyvof ,lDe'nver, State of Colorado, have -invented certain -newand useful Improvements- -lin 'QSpringCompress- I ing Mechanism,` of .whichv ,the followingis a description, reference being-had to thefac- Thelobject of the--invention-is to-provide n'ieans orreadily compressing sprmgsand maintaining the-*compression during hand l A having-.spring engaging jaws, and. means..

In the drawings wherein certain embodi ments of the invention are disclosed,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the extensible compressing and retaining device partially extended;
Fig. 2 is a plan thereof showing a slightly modified form of clamp;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on line 4%-4 of Fig. 1;
Figs. 5 and 6 are tace and edge elevations respectively of the notched spring engaging healds as indicated by lines 5-5 and 6 6; anc
Fig. 7 is an elevation indicating the manner of use of said heads.
The compressing and retaining device comprises two slidably connected members 10 and 12, the member 10 having two spaced rails connected by a head or spring engagcomp anyingdrawings,forming -a part here ing jaw 14. The member' 12 is in the form of tongueslid'aloly mounted between y.the rails Q 10 andhavmg a spring enga-ging jaw 155r The slidable connection between these. members is had by a tongue and-groove conf nection comprising beveled tongues 16 on.

in ltheluse of thisdevice, the members are extendedfa spring placed between the jawsv 14 and 15, pressure placed upon the jaws-' 14` and 15 to compress-the spring S, and the clamping element 24 or 25 operated to bind the parts for retaining the spring in com pressed relation.
In the event that the spring S is too long for the device, or too stiff for easy compression, the same may be placed between a pair of heads having one or more notches 82 in their edges for the purpose of receiving the jaws 14 and 15. These heads carry frusto-conical or similar bosses 34 tor seating the ends of the spring and are of such size as to accommodate various spring sizes. lVhen the heads 30 are placed between the jaws V of a vise or the like, tthe bosses 34 retain the ends of the spring during compression. The jaws 14 and 15 are then placed in the notches 32 and in engagement with the ends of the spring, and the clamp set. Release of the jaws V of the vise leaves the compressed spring between the jaws 14 and 15 of the compressing and retaining device 10, 12. The friction between the edges of the rails 10 and tongue 12 and the walls of the tongue and groove connection 16, 18 is ample to retain the parts even under the tension of the compressed spring S, when the clamp is set.
By means of the construction herein disclosed, a spring may be readily compressed and held in compressed condition for placing in position on the. engine, clutch or other part. Preferably a compressing device of this invention will ordinarily be placed at each side ot the spring to be retained.
I claim:
l. A spring compressor having a pair of relatively movable members provided with spring engaging jaws, one member having a pair of spaced side rails on which the respective jaw is nounted, and the other member having a tongue slidably mounted in and between said rails, and means for clamping the tongue between the rails, said means projecting laterally from one side of the device at the outer side of one of the rails.
2. A spring compressor comprising a pair of members having spring engaging jaws, one member having a pair of spaced rails and the other member having a tongue slidably mounted between said rails, and a clamping device carried by one rail and engaging the other rail to compress the same against said tongue.
3. spring compressor comprising a pair of members having spring engaging jaws, one member having spaced rails and the other member having a tongue slidably mounted between said rails, a clamping device carried by one rail for engaging and compressing the other, and a stop carried by said tongueto engage against said clamping ldevice to prevent separation of the memers.
el. In combination, a pair of heads having seats for the ends of a spring, and a pair of slidable members having jaws, said jaws also being adapted to engage the ends of the spring carried by said heads, said members having means to lock them together to retain the spring between them, said heads being separate from said members and adapted to be placed in a vise with the spring therebetween for compression of the spring.
ln combination, a pair of heads having seats for the ends oi a spring held between them, each head having a notch in the side thereof, and a pair ot slidably connected members having spring engaging jaws adapted to be received in said notches for engagement with the ends of the spring held by said heads, and means to clamp said members together to retain the spring.
6. ln combination, a pair of heads having seats for the ends of a spring held between them, each` head having a notch in the side thereof, and a spring retainer having spring engaging jaws adapted to enter said notches to engage the ends of the spring.
7. A spring compressing device comprising a pair of members each of which has a spring engaging jaw at one end, one member having a pair ot spaced rails and the other member having a tongue slidably mounted between said rails, and a clamping device carried by one rail and projecting laterally from the opposite side of the compressing device beyond the other rail and engaging said other rail to compress the same against the tongue.
ln testimon whereof I affix my signature.
