`UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- CHARLES H. VIOL, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO STANDARD CHEMICAL COMPANY, 0F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
THERAPEUTIC APPLICATOR.
Application filed December 22, 1921.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. VIoL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Therapeutic Applicators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rIhis invention relates to improvements in therapeutic applicators and more particularly to simple and efficient means for holding the plaque on which the radioactive material is supported.
One object of my present invention is to provide holding` or handling means for the plaque supporting the radio-active material where said material is incorporated in a non-porous, vitreous or glassy substance as disclosed in my former Patent No. 1,210,- 731 issued on the 2nd day of January, 1917.
A further object is to overcome inconveniences encountered in providing for a handle attachment directly to the plaque which carries the radio-active glaze.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter set `forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view illustrating my improvements. Figure 2 is a View in section showing the plaque containing the radioactive glaze in place in the holder, and Figure 3 is a view partly in section showing the manner in which the plaque may be discharged from the holder.
It has been found that when a handleattaching member is provided directly on the back Iof the metal plaque before the radio-active glaze is lirmed on (no matter how the plaque is supported), there will result a curling back of the corners of the plaque, which is very undesirable. If the handle-attaching means be soldered on after the radio-active glaze has been applied, the temperature of the soldering operation is liable to cause cracking of the glaze.
To avoid the inconveniences and objec- Serial No. 524,191.
tions above outlined, I have provided a holder for the plaque of the applicator which carries the radio-active glaze.
In the drawing, I have shown the plaque at 1 as consist-ing of a recessed metal member which may be approximately square and have rounded side faces 2 and containmg radio-active glaze 3, such as disclosed in my former patent, is contained. A holder is represented at 4 and may consist of sheet metal having flanges 5 at its side edges, a straight liange or back member 6, and an open front end 7. The side flanges 5 of the holder may be curved transversely to conform to the curved side portions of the applicator plaque and serve to prevent displacement of the latter in one direction. In order to prevent accidental sliding of the applicator plaque in the holder 4, said plaque will be made to have such dimensions and the fianges 5 of the holder so spaced that when the plaque is inserted into the holder it will be held frictionally between the side flanges 5 of the latter. In order to facilitate removal of the applicator plaque from the holder without necessity for the operator to place his thumb or finger against the radio-active glaze, the back wall 6 of the holder is provided with a hole 8 through which a rod or tool 9 may be passed as illustrated in Figure 3.
The back or bottom of the holder 4 is provided with a lug 10 which may be xed thereto in any suitable manner and provided With a socket 1l having a threaded wall to receive the threaded shank of a handle 12.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
l. An applicator comprising a radioactive plaque, aholder therefor having a bottom or back member, side membersv and one end member, said side members being curved to grasp the plaque and spaced apart such distance relatively to the diameter of the plaque that the latter will be held frictionally in said holder, and means on the holder for connecting a handle thereto.
2. Holding means for the radio-active plaque of an applicator, comprising a holder having side portions constituting In testimony whereof, I have signed this frictional retaining means for the plaque, specification in the presence of two suband afhandie detgtchztbly eonneoted with an seribing Witnesses.
